BURIAL-VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 4, 1915. Serial No, 49,021.
To all whom it may concern. 7
Be it known that LDAVID C. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galion, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Burial-Vaults, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprehends certain new and useful improvements in burial vaults and relates particularly to an improvement on the vault structure embodied in and covered by Letters Patent of the United States, Number 1,07%,l02 issued to F. E. Arndt, Galion, Crawford county, Ohio, on September 30, 1913. The patent above referred to discloses a burial vault in which the body portion is provided near its end margins with a plurality of perforations and in which the fixed or permanent end and the frame for the end closure are formed with inner and outer flanges designed to embrace the perforated portions of the body, a plastic sealing medium being poured in between the flanges and around the circumscribed margins of the body whereby when this medium is set it will, owing to the fact that it will flow through and fill the perforations, form retaining bolts or bars in the perforations and thus produce a secure joint.
The present invention aims to simplify the construction above specified, whereby the perforations referred to will be omitted and the cost of manufacture reduced as well as increasing the strength of the vault and it also aims to generally improve and simplify the manufacture of burial vaults of this type so as to render them more commercially desirable.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of the parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view of a burial vault embodying the improvements of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the vault.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the accompanying drawingsby like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the body portion or shell of a burial vault, the same being of any desired shape, construction or design, so far as this invention is concerned, except as hereinafter noted; and 2 designates the fixed end of the vault, it being understood that the frame designed to co-act with the removable end or closure is constructed like the fixed end 2 and therefore it is believed that further reference to said frame is not necessary fora full and thorough understanding of this invention.
In carrying out my present invention, the body portion or shell 1 is formed at the end with a marginal flange 3 which may be turned either inwardly or outwardly to produce a formation hook-shaped in cross sec tion as the metal out of which the body portion or shell is formed is returned upon itself so that the flange will face inwardly or in a returned direction, the flange being spaced from the adjoining portions of the shell, as clearly illustrated in the drawingand being turned inwardly in the present embodiment of the invention, although the invention is not limited thereto, as above stated.
To co-act with the marginal flange 3 the end 2 is formed at and near its margin with outer and inner flanges that are spaced from each other, as shown, the outer flange being designated and the inner flange 5. These flanges are inclined or converged toward their free edges, as clearly shown and the space between them is sufficient to receive the flanged end of the vault shell or body 1. When the parts have been thus assembled, a plastic sealing medium of any desired character fills the space within the flange 3 and between the flanges 4L and 5, so as to surround the flanged edge of the shell, as indicatedat 6 and when this sealing medium is set, it is manifest that a very rigid and secure structure of joint will be produced, whereby the vault will be exceedingly strong and durable and capable of being hermetically sealed. Furthermore, by this construction and arrangement of parts it will be noted that the perforations referred to as embodied in the construction disclosed by Patent Number 1,074,402, are done away with, at the same time the joint is not weakened but is, in fact, strengthened as the shell of the vault at the end margins thereof is sealed and its wall is continuous and not weakened in. any way, but on the contrary is reinforcedor strengthened.
While the accompanying drawing illustrates what I believe to be the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but that various changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and proportions of the: parts without departing y from the scope of the invention as defined tion formed at by theappend'ed, claims,
Having thus" described this intention 'whatI claim, is 7 l In aburialjvault, a shell or body porits end with a returned 7 flange an end provided with marginal inner andouter es m a he fiaesedn of the shellbetween them, sealing med mf l ine; the Space b en/ t a ginal flanges and; the flanged end of the shell, said flanges extending one toward the other in the direction of their free edges.
2-. In a burial vault, a shell formed at its end. with a returned flange which is spaced from the remaining portion of the shelh and an end formed with inner and outer marginal flanges extending one toward the other in the direction of their free edges and receiving the fi z inged end of the shell between them; and a sealing medium filling the space between said marginal flanges and around thefianged end of the shell and between the flange of theshell and the adjoining. port ions h re f in estimony w e w a i my g a u 1 the Pre ence. o We ii ne e I DAVID C; BOYD, Titnesses:
