JOSEPH SUTKAY, OF LAURENTS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR 0F QNE-TI-IIRID TO ROSE LE DOUX, 0F LAURENTS, LOUISIANA.
RAIL-JOINT.
Application filed July 30, 1915. Serial No. 42,816.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SUTKAY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Laurents, in the parish of Verlnilion and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail joints.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of an inexpensive connection for the abutting ends of railway rails and whereby the rails are locked together when seated in operative positions upon the ties of the road bed.
A further object of the device is to provide a lock for the adjacent ends of rails which shall be obscure from view and held firmly seated in its operative position by maintaining the adjacent rails upon the railway ties.
A still further object is to provide a combined web and base flange locking connection between the adjacent ends of railway rails and providing for a substantially obscure joint that obviates the requirement of using any bolts or screws for maintaining the rails operatively connected.
With these general objects in View and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and then claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the end portion of railway rails secured together in the present manner. Fig. 2 is a bottom elevation thereof with the ties and spikes removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section taken upon line III-III of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of an end of one of the rail sections and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lock block detached.
Referring more in detail to the drawings,
1 end portions 10 and 11 of two adjacent rails of a railway track are herein illustrated mounted in substantially the usual manner upon cross ties 12, the rails being main- Specification of Letters Patent.

tained in substantial longitudinal alinement by means of the present device.
: 1A. double fish plate 13 of H-shape incross section is adapted to be arranged with its central connecting portion 14 within substantially central longitudinal slots 15 provided in the webs 16 of the said rails. The double fish plate 13 is of sufficient length to receive the slotted portions of the rail web 16 and to seat the ends of the central connecting portion 14: against the ends 17 of the rail slot. Opposite slightly inclined base flanges 18 are provided upon the fish plate 13 adapted to conform to and to rest inclosingly upon the opposite base flanges 19 of the rails and to seat upon the ties 12.
Substantially Tshaped sockets or recesses 20 are arranged in the lower face 21 of the rails and adapted for receiving a double headed lock block 22 of the form best illustrated in Fig. 5.
When the rails are connected together by means of the fish plate 18, the lock block 22 is positioned in the bottom sockets 20 in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2 and the rails are then flatly positioned upon the ties 12 with the fish plate 13 supported by are assembled as best illustrated in Fig. 1,
it being understood that any desired number of spikes 23 are employed for securing the members upon the ties by engaging the opposite edges of the fish plate flanges 18 or the base flanges 19 of the rails. The recesses 20 are slightly larger than the opposite substantially semi-circular heads 24 of the lock block 22 which allows for the expansion of the metal during the locking engagement of the block, it being seen that the shoulders 25 of the block heads 24 en gage the base portions .26 of the recesses 20.
It will thus be evident that an inexpensive rail joint is provided which securely locks the rails in operative alinement when the1 rails are secured to the ties of the road bec.
"While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made in the form, proportion and details of construction Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as new is A device of the class described comprising cross ties, rails positioned in alinement and mounted upon the said ties and having horizontal alining slots in their adjacent ends, a double fish plate slidingly positioned within the said slots in fiat engagement With the Webs of the rails and inclosing the base flanges thereof, retaining means he alinement With each other and a lock block having substantially semi-circular opposite heads of less diameter than the said recesses and engagingly seated therein and flatly positioned upon one of the said supporting ties closingly arranged beneath the said recesses.
In testimony whereof I aflix 111v signature.
JOSEPH SUTKAY.
