GAME APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 26, 1915.
Application filed March 9, 1915. Serial No. 13,143.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD W. MoCAR- ROLL, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered a certain new and useful Improvement in Game Apparatus, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a toy shooting apparatus for a game of battle, whereby two or more persons may arrange themselves as opponents, and each, by suitable devices, shoot at a fort or target in front of the other, such target being provided with means to retain hit shots, which, after a given period of firing, may be counted to determine the winner of the battle.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, which forms part of my specification, I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention.
F'gure 1 is a combined side elevation and central sectional view of the apparatus; Fig. 2 an end elevation; Figs. 3 and 4. sectional views taken on the lines III-III and VI-- VI, respectively, Fig. l; and Fig. 5 a top plan view of the box in collapsed or packing position. i
In the several figures like numerals are used to designate like parts.
The apparatus, in its preferred form, comprises a box having opposite-disposed side and end walls, and a removable cover, each end wall being provided with a plurality of holes of one size and with a -plurality of holes of a different size. A suitable passageway communicates with each of the holes of one size in one of the end portions, and is adapted to receive and retain such shots as pass through the holes.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, the box, which is elongate in form, has plane faced side walls 1 and 2, made of any suitable rigid material such as wood, metal or composition board. The oppositely disposed end walls are alike in construction, and each consists of an upper portion 8 of transparent material and a lower two-walled portion 4, 5. While any suitable number of target holes may be provided and may be arranged as desired, as shown herein there are two large size holes 6 through the lower part of each wall member 4, two holes 7 of smaller size immediately above the holes 6, and a central hole placed upon the period of shooting.
8 of still smaller size. The space between the wall members 4 and 5 is provided with partitions, which, with said members, afford passageways extending downwardly from the target holes. As will be seen in Fig. 3, the passageway 9 communicates with the likesize holes 6, the passageway 10 with the holes 7, and a receptacle 11 is formed at the rear of the hole 8. Suitable stopper-provided openings 12, 13 and 14 are formed in the wall member 5 at the lowermost part of passageways 9, l0 and 11, respectively, and. through which openings the shots passing through the target holes may be removed.
As the game is intended to be played with the box resting upon a table, no bottom portion is provided. However, I preferably provide a removable top or cover consisting of a wire screen 15 having secured thereto an inset rim 16 adapted to receive the upper edges of the box parts and to reinforce such parts. The vertical edges of the sides and ends are hinged together, as shown in Fig. 5, so that the box may, when the cover 15, 16 is removed, be collapsed as there indicated.
While any desired shooting devices may be employed, it is preferred to use bean blowers. Accordingly such a blower 17 projects through each end of the box, preferably at the lower edges of the transparent portions 3, and each blower is provided with a collar 18 to limit the extent to which the blower may be inserted through the box walls. At the rear of the holes 6, 7 and 8 the wall members 5 may, to prevent shots from rebounding through such holes, be provided with pads 19 of felt or like material; and, to protect the rims of the target holes, suitable washers 20 may be secured to the end portions 4, as shown. Furthermore, to add interest and reality to the game, the exterior of a fort is pictured on the inside face of each end of this box, as is shown in Fig. 4, the target holes 6, 7 and 8 representing the mouths of difierent sized cannons.
In playing a game of battle with my improved apparatus, values such as 5, 10 and 15 may be assigned, respectively, to the holes 6, 7 and 8. The players may either each be given an equal number of beans and shoot until all have been shot, or the number of shots may be unlimited and a time liniit n tie either event the object of the game is, of'
course, to get the greatest valuation of the shots going throughtheholesz' The players, looking through the transparent end portions 3, get a clear View of the target or fort in front of their opponent; and the players are, by the cover 15, protected against being hit by wild shots. The shots entering the target holes are retained in the several passageways 9, 10 and I1, and will roll downwardly toward the openings 12, 13- and 14:. At the conclusion of the game the stoppers are removed from the passageways communicating with the holes of onefsize throughone end, and an outlet 1 for'ea'ch passageway.
2. A, shooting apparatus, comprising a box having oppositely disposed side and-end walls, hinged at their vertical edges, a" removable screen cover having an. inset rim adapted to receive the upper edges of the boxwalls and to reinforce such walls, each end portion being provided with a plurality of holes of different sizes, and receptacles at the rear of the ends adapted to receive ol jectsprojected through the holes therein.
8. A shooting apparatus, comprising a box having oppositely disposed side and end walls and a cover, the upper part of each end portion being made of transparent material and the lower part being provided with a plurality of holes of diiferent sizes, a shooting device projecting through each end portion, and receptacles at the rear of the ends adapted to receive objects projected through the holes therein.
4. A shooting apparatus, comprising a boxhaving oppositely disposed side and end walls hinged at their vertical edges, a removable screen cover having an inset rim adapted to receive the upper edges of the box walls and to thereby reinforce such walls, the upper part of each end portion being made of transparent material and the lower part. being provided' with a plurality of holes otfi one size and with a plurality of holes: of another size, a plurality of downwardly-extending passageways secured to the outside of each end: portion, each of said passageways communicating with the holes or one size through one end, and an outlet for eachpassageway.
In testimony whereof I have hereuntoset my hand.
I ED-WVA-RD W. MOCARROLL. \Vitne'sses-r PAUL N. CRL'roiiLovv, FRANCIS J. ToirAssoN.
