UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
HENRY H. STEVENS, OF BRIGHTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
GAME.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,848, dated May 21,1901.
Application filed March 22, 1901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY H. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brighton, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Games, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a novel and attractive portable indoor game for children and adults, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the game when in use. Fig. 2 represents a partial cross-section of the box, showing the grooved or rabbeted locking-strips for securing the men in position when the game is not in use. Fig. 3 represents a detail perspective View of one of the portable guns used in connection with the game, and Fig. 4 represents a perspective view showing the game-board closed.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
The game consists of a game-board preferably composed of two folding sections A and A, hinged together at a a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Diagonally arranged onsuch sections are the respective inclosed gun-pits or forts B B, in which are located the adjustable and removable preferably spring-actuated guns 0 0', used for shooting balls or projectiles D D from opposite corners of the gameboard.
E E are two sets of men or tin soldiers adapted to be placed upon numbered or marked stationary disks F F, affixed or printed, 850., upon the game-board sections, as shown in Fig. 1. Such disks or marked or numbered fields are arranged one at the side of its opponents gun-pit and diagonally one relative to the other, as shown in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of securing the men or soldiers to the board-sections when the game is not in use, Iprovide each section with grooved or rabbeted guide-ribs G G, shown in detail in Fig. 2. Such ribs are secured to the gameboard sections and are adapted to receive the Serial No- 52,406- (No model.)
base portions of the men or soldiers, so as to prevent their getting broken or defaced while moving or carrying the game board when closed, as shown in Fig. 4..
The disks orindicators F F are numbered, preferably, for the privates, lieutenant, color-bearer, ;captain, 40, or any other desirable numbers.
Back of the numbered fields F F are ar-- ranged hinged back-stops H H, which are swung into vertical positions when the game is played, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to pre vent the balls from being shot beyond the game-board during the progress of the game.
The game is played by the opponents, two or more, setting up their respective men upon the designated indicators, after which the opposing players alternately shoot the projectiles against the men opposite the guns. When a soldier falls, he is removed and his numerical value written upon a score-card, or otherwise a score is kept until one of the players obtains one hundred and fifty points or other desired score. The manner of playing and scoring the game may, however, be varied to suit the ingenuity and wishes of the players.
-When not in use, the men are put in the retaining device G G, in which they are held securely, so as to prevent their dropping loosely around in the game-board when it is closed.
What I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim is A game-board,comprised of two folding sections having gun-pits and guns arranged diagonally opposite each other, men or toy soldiers arranged upon marked fields, back-stops or ball-arresters, and receiving-guides G, G, for the men when not in use substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY H. STEVENS.
