PAD FOR A HEBNIAL TBUSS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 2c, 1915.
Application filed January 5, ma. Serial no. 5 82. Er
the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a pad for a he'r-' nial truss the same being composed of a pliable body, a headed thimble, and a securing member which latter is adapted to pass through the waist-belt into said thimble for connectin the pad in position, the head of said thim le being adapted to rest against a portion of said body and contact with direct pressure against the abdomen at the aflhcted place, while said body is ada ted to close around said afilicted place wit out severity and prevent shifting of the pad.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, as lon as they are included in the sec e of the c aim.
ligure 1 represents a perspective view of a hernial truss embodyin my invention. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of a rtion thereof taken from the inside. Fig. re resents a longitudinal section thereof on inc vm Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a longitudinal section of the pad carrying plate in normal condition.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, 1 desi ates a plate formed of steel or other suita le material of resilient nature, it being preferably straight or right lined in normal condition, as illustrated in Fig. 4. In said plate in the longitudinal direction thereof are the elongated openings or slots 2, which are three in number side by side in said direction, either the right or left one of which is adapted for the connection with the plate of a pad for a single hernia, or the two which are in opposite side portions are ada ted for the connection with the plate of a p urality of pads for double hernia. The central slot is adapted for the connection with the plate of an umbilical pad, which latter may be centered on the umbilicus or adjusted sufficiently to the right or left thereof to more or less extent, while contacting with the umbilical accord ing to the condition of the latter.
he pad 1 in normal condition is laid flat upon the waist belt 3 at a proper place thereon and firmly secured thereto. by rivets 4, or other suitable meansfi there being interposed between the lateand-belt the washers 5 of leather or ot er suitable material. A similar washer 6 is applied to the inner facing of the belt 3 backitbfthe washer 5, thus strengthening the belt at the opposite places and adding to the wearing qualities thereof, both washers having slots or openings therein registering with those in the plate 1.
7 esignates one of'the pads employed, it being composed of 2 the hollow annulusshaped inflatable body 8 of soft rubber, the tubular thimble 9 which is passed through the central opening of said body, the bore of said thimble being screw-threaded, and the head 10 on the inner end of said thimble, said head resting against the central portion of the body 8'around the opening thereon, and having its outer face sutficiently convex for the purpose intended, said head being formed of rigid material preferably hard rubber and is adapted to be fitted against the human body at or about the afiiicted part thereof. In order to hold the said head 10 and the thimble 9 engaged with the body 8 and consequently connect the pad with the belt 3, I em loy the screw 11 whose shank passes throu the proper slot of the plate 1 and those 0 the washers 5 and 6, its head bearing against the plate 1 about the wall of the slot therein, so that when said screw is tightened it draws the thimble and head of the latter in position on the body 8 and compresses the latter to a required extent and holds said body and consequently the pad securely on the belt, it being evident that the pad may be adjusted to the right or left according to requirements, it being seen that when the ad is presented to the human body at the a ictedplace, and the belt is fitted on the waist and drawn up, the plate 1 flexes and so curves around said place causing a direct pressure against the afflicted place, thus controlling the hernia with sufcient firmness and yet without severity, while the body 8 closes against the afilicted place around that occupied by the head 10, thus serving to prevent shifting of the herma from the position engaged by the head 10.
It is evidept that when the pad is presented to the desired place and the belt adjusted, the latter curves around the abdomen and so flexes the plate-that it nlso ais sunies a curved removed therefrom the plate resumes its normnlstrnight or'right lined'shape ready when again applied in position to be flexed or bent in curved direction as before, and the resultant-pressure may-be adjusted byv correspond-- inly tightenin the belt.
. living thus escribed my invention what I. claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A truss pad composed of a hollow, inflat able body of the form of an annulus, a thin:- ble ada 'ted to enter the opening of said body, it end on saidthimble adapted to be seated on said body around the wall of said openin and'a screw which is adapted to enter sai thimble and'be engaged with a portion of a belt employed for the truss.
