' it known that we, James H. RAND and James H. RAND, J12, citizens of the United tates, and residents of North 'louawanda, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful linproveinents in Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to filing devices,

and particularly to filing devices of the kindv having a base and spindles on which tickets containing various entries or ineinoranda, bills, and other papers are temporarily filed.

The objects of the invention are to provide means whereby the upright spindles may be beat or swung back into recumbent position upon the desk or table, and into open relation to the base, to enalrle the user to lay open the package of papers on the spindles, and turn the sheets freely, after the manner of the leaves of a book; and otherwise to improve the construction, and render more convenient the operation. of such filing devices; all as hereinafter-described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3, A represents the base, which may be a wooden board, and A a swinging section hinged to the board A by a hinge or butt a. The hinged section A in this form of the invention preferably consists of a metal plate. represent a pair of filing spindles, and preferably consists of the two legs of a U-shaped rod of wire, which extend upward through two holes provided therefor in plate A, with the cross part c, which connects the two legs, extending between the two holes on the under side of the'plate, and there secured to the plate by solder or ot i r suitable means. Said cross part c is ho d in a slot a formed in the base A and eiitendrngbetween the holes through which spindles C, projest. hen the spindles are in upstanding or normal position as shown in Figs. 1. and they are locked in that position by a yielding, spring actuated lock, consisting of the headed bolt B extending through a bore in the end of the base, and provided with a hook b which engages the edge of the plate A and holds the plate A and the spindles against movement on the base. Said lock is normally urged into locking position by springs a, but ina y be unlocked to release the plate A by merely pressing the bolt B inward. If the user wishes to inspect the sheets of package D, he unlocks the hinged section or plate A and swings the spindles from their upstanding position shown in Fig. l, to their open or recumbent position as shown in Fig. 3, so that both the base and the spindles lie out on the table or desk and enable the user to turn the sheets and to lay them flat in either direction without interference by the spindles or the base, where they may be conveniently inspected precisely like the leaves of a book.

Said spindles are removably secured in place by a pin 0, which extends from the inside or abutting surface of the hinged section A across the slot rfi. below the cross part c, to hold the latter in place. The pin (2 is made with a head or hook c which may be used for withdrawing the pin, and the abutting surface of the section A is countersunk to receive the head so that it will not interfere with the closing of the base. lVhen the base isin normal position the head cl pin 6 covered, and the pin prevented from becoming accidentally dislodged. A spring lock is provided to hold the base sections in normal position, consisting oi the resilient plate 7, secured to one of the hinged members, having a hole g, which'snaps over and engages a stud h on the other member. The hinged section A is shown in folded condition and the spindles C in recumbent position, in broken lines in Fig. 7. The operation of the device for the inspection of the sheets D is the same as already described with reference to the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3.

In order to prevent the accidental. dislodgment of the sheets D from the spindles, there may be provided a sheet-holder in the form of a yoke K, the ends of which are curved to engage the spindle C, C, as shown at is. A tension spring connects the yoke K with the base, and yieldingly holds the yoke down upon the package of the sheets D; The yoke is removable from the spin: dlesby merely stretching spring 70 and disengaging the ends ]c from the spindles, to permit sheets to be'placed upon or removed from the spindles. It will be clear that the yoke makes sliding engagement with the spindles and is adjustable up and down thereon to accommodate packages D of varying thickness. Although we have shown the sheet-holding yoke only in Figs. 4 and 5, it will be understood that it is equally applicable to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3.

The U-shaped rod, with its legs projecting upward through holes in one of the base sections, and its cross part extending underneath'the base section and housed in a slot, affords a very rigid and secure pair of spindles', much less likely to work loose from the base than separate spindles set into the base in the usual way, and impossible to pull out in use or even by rough handling.

We claim:

1. A filing device comprising a base having a pair of holes opening through its top surface, and a U-shaped rod, the legs of which constitute a pair of filing spindles eK- tending upward through said holes, said base also having a slot extending between said holes, in which the cross part which connects the legs of said U-shapcd rod is housed.

2. A filing device com iirising a base divided into a main. section and a hinged section, said hinged section having a pair of holes therethrough and a slot connecting said holes on the under side, a U-shaped rod, the legs of which constitute a pair of filing spindles extending upward through said holes, and the cross part of which is housed in said slot, and a pin extending from the inside or abuting surface of said hinged section across said slot to hold the cross part of said U-shaped rod in position.

3. A filing device comprising a base having a pair of holes therethrough. and a slotconnecting said holes on the under side, a U- shaped rod, the legs of which constitute a pair of filing spindles extending upward through said holes, and the cross part oi which is housed in said slot, and a pin extending across said slot to hold the cross part of said U-shaped rod in position.

4. A filing device comprising a base, filing spindles extending upward from the base. a

sheet holder consisting of a yoke extendiiig between the spindles, the ends of the yoke removably engaging the spindles at one side only, and a spring connecting said base and yoke yieldingly pressing the latter against the spindles and down upon the sheets.
