To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, HAROLD F. WARDWELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mullions, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to mullion constructions designed for use in connection with metallic window sashes, and it is the object of the invention to obtain a simple construction which provides for expansion or contraction in width.
In the drawings :Figure l is across section through the mullion; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a mullion of expanded width; and Figs. 3 and 4 are elevations of Figs. 1 and 2 respectively.
In metallic window construction it is desirable to employ sash sections of standard widths and to fill therewith openings of variable dimensions. One method of ac complishing this result is by placing mullions of variable widths between the sash sections, so as to obtain the desired spacing thereof. lVith the present invention the mullion is so constructed as to provide means for automatic adjustment to compensate for Variations in the size of the opening or of the sash.
In detail, A and B are the side bars of adjacent sash sections, which may be provided with the usual ridge or shoulder C forming a seat for the glass.
D is an intermediate bar for connecting the overlapping flanges of the sash bars A and B, preferably a T-bar, the web of which is of suflicient width to impart the desired strength and rigidity.
E are clips for securing the bar D to the bars A and B, and which, as shown, extend through apertures F in the web of the T-bar near the neutral axis thereof.
H and H are bolts or other securing devices for clamping the clips E against the flanges of the bars A and B and opposite overlapping portions of the T-bar D.
To provide for adjustment in width, the overlap of the bar D upon the flanges of the bars A and B may be varied, and where still greater adjustment is required, the bar D may be exchanged for one of greater or lesser width. Thus, as shown in Fig. 2, a wider bar D is employed than that shown in Fig. 1.
The construction is one which provides for automatic adjustment to compensate for expansion or contraction, as the flanges of the bars A and B are capable of movement in relation to the bar D and clip E. However, as the flanges A and B of the bars A and B are slightly tapered they will be held from accidental displacement in the inward direction and thus the sash sections between mullions will be held from displacement in either direction.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A mullion, comprising spaced angle bars, a T-bar having its head portion over lapping the alined flanges of said angle bars and its web extending centrally therebe tween, a clip passing through an aperture in said web and engaging the inner sides of said flanges, and means for clamping said clip to said T-bar.
2. A mullion, comprising spaced sash bars, a T-bar having its head portion overlapping alined flanges of said sash bars and its web portion extending intermediate said bars, a clip plate extending through an aperture in said web portion and engaging the said flanges of said sash bars, and a clamping bolt passing through the head of said T-bar and said clip.
3. A mullion, comprising a pair of spaced sash bars, an intermediate T-bar having its head portion overlapping the alined flanges of said sash bars and its web portion extending therebetween, a clip passing through an aperture in the web of said T-bar and engaging said alined flanges, and clamping member for forcing the clip plate into en- 10 bolts passing through said head upon oppogagelnent with the flanges of said sash bars. site sides of said Web and engaging said clip.
