To all whom it may concern a Be it known that I, ELwooD H. CONRAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trevorton, in the county of Northumberland and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Attaching and Detaching Light-Globes, of which the following is a specification. I v J This invention relates to means for attachingand detaching light globes such as incandescent electric light I globes to or from their supports; the main object of the invention being to. provide means for ethciently supporting theglobe duringthe vertical movement of the handle and consonantly grippingthe same at a gradually increasing degree simultaneous with the fastening operation. This mode of fastening the handle to the collar has proven very eflicient in practical use, as the'handle is held in movable relation to the collar in order that it may codperate with suitable means carried on the respective gripping'sections 15 and 16 for operating the latter at a gradually increasing extent during the fastening operation of the globe. It is to be realized however that the method of fastening the said handle to the collar may be varied without departing from the scope of my invention.
-Suitable studs 25 and 26 are secured to the respective sections 15 and 16 adjacent their freeends in order to accommodate the re spective ends of a flexible operating member 27. The ends of the flexible member are secured totheadjacent studs, that portion of the fastening member adjacent the end Which is secured .to the stud 25 being brought to extend over the stud 26, downwardly to engage the fastening member 28 on the handle. From the member 28, the respective portion of the operating member is brought upwardly to extend over the stud '25 and has its terminal fastened-to the stud 2 6 in any suitable manner. It is now recognized that the independent movement of the handle-in one directionwill' exert a pressure upon the stud members, through the medium of-the member'27 that is sufficient to I contract therespective free ends of the gripping sections. This operation may be more concisely illustrated upon reference to Fig. l of thedrawings. The globe A is first arranged in connection with the device in'the manner shown; its'lower portion resting on :the curvedportio'ns of the arms 13 and the protuberance on its under face projecting into the recess 12. The-gripping sections 1:5 land16are normally held about the sides oftne globe by action of the tension'exerted ture will be held in a secure position through the instrumentality of the respective arms and the lateral displacement thereof will be prevented by the gripping 7 structures. As theglobe is secured into its respective socket, it will naturally'resist'the corresponding rotation of the gripping structures and the collar 22. allow the handle to-move freely, and by so doing, it will draw the operating member 27 taut and exert a pressure upon the respective stud members that is suflicient to contract the ends of the gripping sections. Thus it will become apparent'that the globe This will is gripped at a gradually increasing degree simultaneous with the fastening operation and that the same may be positively and effectually secured in place.
In reducing my invention to practice I find that the form referred to herein as the most practical and preferred embodiment is the most eliicient, but realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in concurrence with the adoption of my device, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction and proportion of parts may be resorted to when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a body structure, resilient arms carried by said body structure, relatively movable gripping structures, carried by said arms, a
handle movably connected to said body and flexible means connecting the free ends of said gripping structures and said handle whereby the independent rotation of said handle will cause the contracting of the free ends of said gripping structures, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, a body structure, resilient arms carried by said body structure, gripping sections carried by said arms, one end of said gripping structures being hingedly connected together, a handle movably connected to said body structure, and means connecting the free ends of said gripping sections and said handle, substantially as described.
3. Ina device of the character described, a body structure, arms extending from said body structure, gripping members carried by said arms, one end of said gripping members being hingedly connected, a. collar secured to said body structure, a handle in movable relation to said collar, and flexible means connecting the free ends of said gripping members and said handle for the purpose specified.
4:. In a device of the character described, a body structure, said body structure provided with a series of cut-outs, a plurality of resilient arms, the lower ends of said arms seating in said cut-outs, means to secure said arms to said body structure, gripping sections carried by said arms, means hingedly connecting one end of said gripping sections, studs secured to said gripping sections, adjacent their free ends, a collar carried by said body structure, a handle in movable relation to said collar, and flexible means connecting said stud members and said handle for the purpose specified.
5. In a device of the character described, a body structure, resilient arms projecting said handle for contracting the free ends of said gripping members, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the character described,
a body structure, a series of resilient arms secured to said body structure, gripping members carried by said arms, means hingedly connecting one end of said gripping members, the other end of said gripping members being normally spaced apart, a handle member and means operated by said handle member for contracting the free ends of said gripping members, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the character described, a body structure, a collar carried thereby, a handle movably secured to said collar, a series of resilient arms carried by said body structure, means to secure said arms to said body structure, gripping members integral.
with said arms, means hingedly connecting one end of said gripping members the other end of said gripping members being normally spaced apart, cushion means arranged on said arms and said gripping members, and means operated by said handle for contracting the free ends of said gripping members, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the character described, a body structure, said body structure provided with a series of cut-outs, a recess provided in the upper face of said body structure, a series of resilient arms, the lower ends of said arms secured in said cut-outs, a collar arranged about said body structure, a handle movably connected to said collar, gripping members integral with said arms, means hingedly connecting one end of said gripping members, the opposite ends of said gripping members being normally spaced apart, stud members secured to said gripping members adjacent their free ends, cushion means secured to the inner faces of said arms and said gripping members, and a flexible member connecting said stud members and said handle whereby the independent rotation of said handle will cause the contraction of the free ends of said gripping members, substantially as described.
