ADJUSTABLE WINDOW-SCAEFOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1915.
Application filed November 25, 1914. Serial No. 874,044.
of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This inventionv relates to adjustable window scaffolds, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an improved means for supporting the scafiold.
at the opposite sides of the window frame, and to provide means whereby the scaffold may be quickly connected to the supporting means whenever desired for use and can be readily removed for packing in a small space when not required.
Another object of the invention is to provide simple, reliable and eflicient means for supporting a window scafiold for cleaning windows, in which improved means are provided for supporting the scafi'old and seat so that it can be readily disconnected from the permanent support at the opposite sides of the window, and can also be adjusted for windows of different widths'whenever required.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a window casing or frame and showing the improved scaffold in plan, Fig. 2 is a vertical section of portions of a window frame and showing the scaffold and back rest in elevation, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view made on a larger scale of the supporting members of the scaffold, Fig. 1- is a detail 1 elevation showing one of the supporting members and angular end of one of the adjustable rods connected thereto, Fig. is a detail perspective view of the adjusting rods, and the disk connection for said rod, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the bracket or support for the back rest.
Referring to the drawings, the'numeral 1 designates a support made preferably of sheet metal and bent into the form of the letter U. The supports 1 are connected to the opposite sides of the window frame in the lower portion of the sash groove of the upper sash, and said supports are provided with outwardly turned feet 2 provided with bolt holes 3. These supports may be permanently secured to the window frame if desired, but as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the bolts 4 are provided with pivoted latches 5 disposed in the groove or recess 6 in the window frame, thus rendering the supporting members 1 removable whenever desired.
The supporting members 1 are each. provided with a rectangular alined opening in the two horizontal members a and b to receive an L-shaped bracket 7, one arm of which extends through. the apertures in the members a and b, and the other extends horizontally inward toward the opposite side of the window frame. Connected to the horizontal arm 7 is a bracket consisting of a portion 8 connected by rivets 9 to the end of the arm 7 and provided with a vertical member 10, a horizontal member 11, bent downward as at 12 and providing a horizontal member 13 and a vertical terminal portion 15. The two horizontal portions 8 and 11 are provided with alined apertures or perforations 16 to receive the angular ends 17 of the adjustable rods or bars 18, said rods having angular ends 19. The clownwardly extending terminal ends 17 of the rods or bars 18 are each provided with a notch 20 to engage the wall ofthe slot 16 in the member 11 of the support, to thus render the device reliable and prevent disconnection of the parts when in use.
The inner ends of each of the members 18 are squared as shown at 21 in Fig. 5, and extended through a disk 22, said squared portion being held in connection with the disk by means of a cotter pin 23. The disk 22 is provided with a perforation through which the companion member 18 passes, thus permitting the two members 18 to be adjusted one relatively to the other in the center so that the scaffold may be secured to windows of difierent width, as will be obvious.
Mounted upon the parallel portions 2d of the members 18, is a back rest support comprising a plate 25 provided with screw holes 26 therein and oppositely bent spaced arms 27 provided with apertures 28 through which the parallel members 24; extend. A back rest 29 is secured to the face of the bracket by means of rivets 30.
It will be understood that the parts thus far described are duplicated on the opposite side of the Window frame.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that these scaffolds may be readily removed from the supports 1 and can be packed Within a small space whennot required for uses The members 1 may be permanently secured to the Window frame, or may be connected by the removable bolts shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Various changes may be'made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
\Vhat is-claimed is a 1. A window cleaning scaffold comprising U-shaped' supporting devices to be connected.
at opposite sides of the Window frame, L- shaped brackets removab'ly connected to said supporting members, a socket member provided with alined apertures, and adjustable rods having ends seated in said apertures and each provided with a notch to lock it in Copies of this patent may be obtained for in said apertures, said rods each having a squared end, and a disk through which said ends project, said disk also being provided with a circular aperture through which the companion member extends to permit adjustment, and a back rest supported on the parallel portions of said rod.
- In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
