' To all 'whom may concern:
.It STATES "PATE svEN Swensonv AND osoAR sWANsoN, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED RAIL JOINT AND CHAIR.
Be it knownthat we, SVEN SwANsoN and OSCARKSWANSON, subjects of the King of Sweden, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Combined Rail Jointsand Chairs, of which the following is aspecification.
The present 'inventionrelates to improvements in fastening means for joining railway device accomplishing this function without utilizing bolts, thereby -eliminating the yuse of parts subject to .loosening and displace-l ment, and atithe same time, one which` greatly facilitates the operation of connectjing the rail ends.
Our inventionV consists of a rail chair,
clamping mea-ns having interlocking connection therewith and adapted to coperate with the shplates, and means for `actuating said clamping means to cause yclamping action;
` it is further contemplated to'employ a locking element co'acting with the fishplates and the rails and with which the clamping means -also coperates to prevent displacement.
With the above and other objects vin view, this invention 'consists in the construction,
Y combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed -1 and illustrated in the accompanying draw- Ation to the rail joint.v Fig. 2 is an end ele` ings, wherein:
VFigure 1- 's a vertical sectional view through a device constructed inv accordance with four invention, and showing its applicavation thereof. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional viewtaken on the plane indicated the line 4-4 of Fig. r2. F ig. '5 is a yperspective view of a clamping memberof this device.
Throughout the following detail description, and on the' several figures of the draw- Y ings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings,the numerals designate therail extremities which are to be joined and 2, 2 the fishplates therefor. Thesev fshplates are located as usual at the side of the rails engaging the webs thereof and the said parts are provided with suitable apertures to receive a transverse locking pin 3 passing through the fishplates and the rails. The rails seat upon a chair 4 which projects laterally from the rails at each side and is formed at its end portions with transclamping member.
Specification of Letters Patent.A f I VVPatented 0015, 19, 1915.
verse recesses 5 therebeneath The chairf4, as will be particularly noted by reference to Fig. 4, isformed at eachv side with longitudinally extending slots 6 each leading to a recess at'the respective side. j
In F1g.'5 of the drawingsis illustrated a clamping member which isfused in conjunction with this device, said clamping member groove 10 and just beneath this groove is v located an opening 11 extending through the At the opposite side or inthe face of the arm extremity is formed a recess 12 which is adapted to receive an end of the locking pin 3 hereinbefore mentioned. It will` be understood that a clamping member 7 is provided at each side of the rails and said clamping members are first interlocked withithe chair by inserting the upstanding arms 9 through the slots 6 and positioning the heads 8 in the 'transverse recesses 5. l/Vhen in this position, the chair is disposed beneath the rail extremities and spikes 13 are driven into the tie 14 von which the chair is located, said vchair being provided withopenings to receivethese spikes which when driven home engage the base flanges of the rail, as shown in Fig. 3.
In order to obtain a proper clamping action of the fishplates against the rail webs,
.spike-like wedge members 15 are introduced into the grooves 10 of the upstanding arms 9 of the clamping members, through the openings 1l therebeneath and into the tie.` Gwing to the wedge-shape of these members, as they are driven downwardly into place, the clamping members 7 are actuated "and caused to clamp against the fishplates at vopposite sides of the rail. In order to obchair is formed vvith a Vshou'lder'ilSJAatthe inthe process of connecting rails. p j' Havingthus described the invention, vvhatA end of eachv of its longitudinal recesses 6,

It'willbeobvious from the foregoing description, that' the device enables-the joining together of rail extremities Without .theff necessity of employingthe boltscustomarily utilized.y for attaching ishplatesV and ,Which bolts :very often becomeloose, resultngrin' a separation or spreading of the rails and accidents necessarily following such separal tiongJThe dispensing with bolts .of this character enables the device tolle.. quickly positioned, thereby savingy considerable time We lclaim as neivvis: I
