Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, RAY R. SIMPSON and JOSEPH S. WILMOTH, citizens of the United States, residing at'Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Combined Envelops,

Shipping-Tags, and Index-Cards, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a new and useful combined envelop, shipping tag and index card, which is particularly intended for the use of persons whose business involves the shipment of oods in containers which are to be returned to the shipper.

It is the object of our invention to form sheet of card board or paper, a card containing data identifying the shipment, which previous to the shipment will be torn off by the shipper for his records, and an envelop and tag-which will be attached to the container in which certain goods are shipped, the tag carrying the address of the consignee, and the envelop containing the invoice, the invoice thus being transmitted to the consignee without expenditure for postage.

Another object is to provide two cards or checks attached to the envelop portion and bearing similar designations and arranged to be detached from said portion, so that one may be retained at the shipping oflice and the other fastened to the container. By this arrangement a record of the shipping and location of the retainer may be kept and upon return of the container the record may be so indor'sed.

It is a further object of our invention to provide a device of the character described, that will be strong, durable, simple and efficient and comparatively easy to construct.

With these objects in view, our invention has relation to-certain novel features of the construction, and'use, an example of which is described in the following specification and is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a rear view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a development of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken upon the line a.-?; of Fig. 1.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate similar parts in all the figures, the

letters A, B, and C respectively designate an envelop, shipping tag and index card, which comprise our invention and are produced from a single sheet of cardboard or paper having the form illustrated in Fig. 3.

By reference to Fig. 3 it is seen that the members B and C project oppositely and integrally from the side of the sheet of which our invention is to be formed, the portion of the sheet lying between the members B and C serving to form the front of an envelop, when a portion of the sheet projecting below said lateral members is turned over upon the central portion to form the back of the envelop. That portion of the sheet which lies above a line extended between the upper edges of the members B and C forms the flap of the envelop when turned down as shown 1n Fig. 1. At the juncture of each member and O with the correlated member A, a line of perforations 1 is formed to facilitate the tearing apart of the three members.

The edge 3 of the back which comes beneath the flap 4 when the envelop is completed will preferably be of an arcuate shape to facilitate the introduction of any paper into the envelop. The back of the envelop W111 preferably be slit as indicated at 5 to receive an apex of the envelop flap, a sllght hook 6 being preferably formed upon said flap to engage beneath one end of said slit to retain the flap in the slit. Some suitable adhesive such as is indicated by the numeral 2 will be employed to secure the lateral edges of the back of the envelop to the front thereof. It is preferred to aperture the two members B and C as is respectively indicated by the numerals 7 and 8 to facilitate attaching the former. member by a cord or wire to a container, and mounting the latter member upon a Wire card filing member.

As is clearly shown in the envelop will contain the address of the consignee together with the words Invoice enclosed. The shipping tag B and the index card C will contain duplicate printed forms to receive the number of the shipment, the name of the consignee, the time or date of the shipment, and the amount of goods shipped.

In using our mvention, before sending Fig. 2, the front of 'ofi any shipment of goods in a container,

the shipper will fill in the data which the erly come within the scope of the following members A B and C are arranged to carry,

and he will then tear off the index card C and will keep it in' his records. The container will be shipped with the integral parts A and B secured .to it. When the consignee receiyes the shipment, he will tear off the part A inwhich he will find his invoice. Thus the shipper will avoid the expenditure of time and postage incidental to mailing out his invoices. The tag B will remain attached to the container and will not be removed therefrom until the container is returned to the shipper, who upon receipt of the container willcheck the same off in his index cards. The index cards held by the shipper will constitute an accurate record of all the c o ntainers Which have been sent out, aiid hence he need suffer no loss through the'neglect of any consignee to return a container.

' ile our invention is particularly adapted for the use of a dairy to insure the return of the milk cans, it is to be understood that the invention may be used for any shipper employing containers, the return of which is necessary.

The invention is presented as including all such changes and modifications asgpropclaims with a shipping-tag detachably secured to said envelop and projecting beyond a lateral pasted edge thereof.

3. In a device of the character described, the combinationwith an envelop having its front and back portions integral, the lateral edges of said portions being pasted together, of a shipping tag and an index card integrally projecting from opposite lateral edges of the front member of the envelop.
