To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ORLANDO S. GAUoH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Shelby, in the county of Richlan d and State of .Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thumb- Pieces for Manifold Sales or Order Books,

,of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in covers and associated devices for manifolding books.

One of the objects ofmy invention is to provide simple and practical means for assisting the operator to manipulate the book rapidly, and to obviate the danger of tear ing the sheets or leaves.

Other objects will be in part obvious and I in part pointed out hereinafter.

Referring to the drawing, reference numerals 1 and 2 represent parts of the cover and 3 the fiexiblehinge connecting them together. An auxiliary support 4 is hinged to the part 2 and swings to the right as shown in Fig. 2. A duplicating pad 5 is mounted upon and fastened on one end to the support in any well known manner by stitching, binding wire, or by a spring clamp.

A tissue book 6 is fastened along and adjacent to the edge of the duplicating pad, allowing each tissue sheet to be folded upon the pad. A double-faced carbon sheet 7 is attached at one end to the pad by any well known means. A thumb piece 8 is preferably attached by a rivet 9 to the support. Theupper edge of the thumb piece .is provided with a cylindrical portion projecting therefrom to enable thevoperator to get a uniform and sure hold of the thumb piece when he desires to swing the support carrying thepad.

The operation is as follows :A leaf of the tissue book is placed between the doublefaced carbon, bound at the top of the duplieating pad, and'the original of the first or top sheet, and when the memoranda is indorsed on the top sheet, the carbon paper shows the result of the impression on the bac'kof the tissue leaf and on the front of the duplicate sheet. After the memoranda has been indorsed, the usual method employed by operators is to take the auxiliary support 4 by the thumb at one corner of the free side and swing it aboutthe hinge 3, but in commencing this operation the free" end of the auxiliary support 4 lies so close to part 2 of the cover that the thumb is very apt to fail to engage the support and slips from it and when this occurs the thumb naturally carries upwardly with it the lower corners of the leaves of the pad 5 raising them upward from the auxiliary su ort 4 and imparting an u ward motion which tears the tissue leaf in use along the side of the ad 5. In order to overcome this defect in the construction of the hooks and obviate any chance of carelessly tearing the tissue leaf in removing it as described. the thumb piece 8, shown in Fig. 3, is ap lied as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

As the proiecting portion on top of the thumb piece 8 projects slightl bevond the side of the pad. as shown in Fig. 1, and is located above the support, sufficient room is provided to insure against failure to secure a firm hold with the thumb. and it is ob ious that the thumb piece as designated will enable the operator to manipulate the book very much more rapidly without any danger of tearing the tissue by permitting the thumb to slip.

As many changes could be made in the above con truction and many apparently widely d fferent embod ments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall. be interpreted as illustrative and not in a lim ing sense.

What I claim is:-

1. In a manifolding book, in combination, a. support, a pad upon said support, an auxiliary support hinged to said first support to swing about an axis substantially parallel to the line .of binding of said pad, a

second pad mounted on said auxiliary supa support, a pad upon said support, an'auxiliarysupport'hinged to said first support, said first support projecting beyond a free edge of said auxiliary support, a pad upon said auxiliary support positioned to receive between its leaves a leaf of said first pad, and a lifting device secured to said auxiliary support and projecting'beyond the same in the direction in which said first support projects, whereby saidlifting device is protected bythe extended portion of said support.

' 3. In a manifolding book, in combination,

a lifting device having a portion connected with a part of the book andnormally lying substantially in the plane thereof, a sub-' stantially upright portion, and a thumb engaging portion extending beyond said up- 1' right portion substantially in the direction of the plane of the latter. 7
