P. EMBSER.
PRINTERS MITER GAGE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 17. 1915.

-' 4 i rnr n'rnus MITER-GAGE,
Toall whom it may concern Emnsnmfa'citr zen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and 'State' of New York, 7 have. invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Printers .Miter Gages, of whichthe 'following is a specification.
In the artfof printing, asis well known, it is frequently necessary to cut rules or Y leads, at an angle .of in order tof'form curate means for aiding apersonoperatmg mitered corners whenthe rules are set in ,pv's io lin the for .at a agle f'go to h'o h -z V ifMy inventlon relates simple but ac,-
a miter machine to cutv a rule or leadto the exact length" :desired with accuracy and speed. V device comprises a unitary structure which may be readily attached to an existing cutting machine.
i V "In-the accompanying drawings which if form apart of this specifiCat OnyEigure 1 is a perspective view of a cutter to which is attached one embodiment of my invention.
. Fig. 2 is a perspective view on an enlarged scale of my improved device. Fig. 3 is an enlarged, fragmentary view showing details of construction and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line IVIVof Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the
' numeral 1. designates a cutting machine of I well knowndesign, having a bed plate 2cand a cutting knife 3, adapted to be oscillated about the shaft 4 by means of a handle 5, and the connecting links 6 and 7. This machine forms no part of my present invention but is shown merely to illustrate the mode .of. attaching and using my invention in connection "with any well known or eX- isting'machine- The bed plate ofthe cutter I .1s provided with an adjustable'clamp 8, p which is adapted to be held in place byf manipulation of the thumb screw 9'.
My improved gage consists essentially of a substantially triangular frame; having a base member 10, an upright 11 and an inclined guide element 12 which is preferably provided with an upstanding, vertical flange 13. This entire structure may preferably be formed from a single unitary piece of sheet metal. by die-stamping and bending into the shape shown inthe drawings. At
the apex between the upright and the guide Specification of Letterslatent.

member apair of slots ltand 15 are formed, 7' one below the other, and into the slot 1 1 is introduced a slide 16 which is provided-near its lower extremity with an upturned lug 17, V
and at its upper end with a thumb piece 18. The slide is urged against the inner side of the'incli'ned guide member by means of a U,- shaped spring 19, which encircles the upright and has iit's' ends, 20v and 21, bent down an lncline passing through the slot 15, and
the guide, the spring, meanwhile, holding'it in such adjusted position. A second. lug, 23
may be formed near the upper. end of the slide and adapted'to enter an open slot 2 1- in the upper extremity of the guide member whenthe slide is at or near its lowest position."
. When itis desired to miter a slug toany desired length the lug 17 is placed in the particular slot 22 which corresponds'to the length of the slug which it' is desired to cut, after the base 10 has been clamped in position in the machine shown in Fig. 1, with the forward edge 25 adjacent to the cutting edge of the miter. In order that this may be done with greater facility a scale of num bers, preferably on the em system, is provided in connection with the slots 22, indieating the length of a slug which will be cut by the miter when one end is held against the lug 17. The flange 13 forms. a guide for the side of the slug so that the operator, hav- I mitering the angle between the base 10 and the inclined guide member 12 will be 45.
definitely positioningthe lug with, respect to although this angle may, of course, heal tered to 'suit special conditions.
, While I- have illustrated and described one specific embodimentof my device, I appreciate that it is susceptible of wide application, and I do not desire to be limited to the precise structure-shown and described.
Having thus described my invention what tionin any one of said slots. 1
