and wherein mechanism is provided comprising a reservoir adapted to be connected with the steam a source of water supply, and having connections with the said source and with the .boiler, and having other connections with dome of the boiler for enabling the reservoir to be filled from the source of I supply and to be emptied into the boiler, by

In the drawings is shown a diagrammatic view of a boiler provided with the improved feeder and with parts in section.
In the present embodiment of the invention the boiler 1 has the usual smoke stack 2 and steam dome 3, and that portion A of the boiler at the furnace is adapted to receive the water from the feed. A tank or reservoir5 of suitable size and capacity is arranged adjacent to the boiler, in the present instance, being at the front of the boiler and adjacent to the smoke stack. The reservoir is provided With a water gage 7 of usual construction connected at its ends with the reservoir by means of valves 8 and 9 respectively, and
the gage is adapted to indicate the height of the water in the tank or reservoir.
A steam pipe 10 leads from the steam dome 3 to the tank or reservoir opening through the top thereof, and a valve casing 11 is in terposed in the pipe for controlling the passage of steam from the dome to the reservoir. It will be obvious that when the valve 11 is open the steam pressure in the dome will be admitted directly to the tank or reservoir and at the top thereof above the water level. A branch pipe 12 leads from the steam pipe 10 intermediate the ends thereof to a source of water supply, not shown, and the said branch is connected to the lateral branch of a T 13, interposed in the length of the pipe 10. A valve casing 14 is interposed in the pipe 12, between the T 13, and the source of supply the communication through for controlling the said pipe 12. The T 13 contains an insupported by a bracket 6 jeetor or jet so arranged that when the steam pressure passes above the open top of the pipe 12, a partial vacuum will be created in the pipe 12 which will cause the water to flow from the source of supply through the said pipe 12 and the T 13 and through the pipe 10 to the tank or reservoir 5.
A heater 15 of any usual or desired construction is arranged adjacent to the boiler near the rear end thereof, and the pipe 12 passes through the heater, packings 16 being arranged at the openings of the heater through which the pipe 12 extends for insuring a tight joint at these points. Water is conducted from the tank or reservoir 5 to the portion A of the boiler by means of a delivery pipe 17 the said pipe extending from the bottom of the tank 5 through the heater 15 to a connection with the valve casing 18 in rear of the heater. Another pipe 19 leads from the valve casing 18 downwardly to near the bottom of the portion 1 of the boiler and at its lower end the pipe' boiler to the pipe 19.
A valve casing 22 is connected with the top of the tank or reservoir 5, and the valve in the easmg is controlled by a lever 23 pivoted to the top of the casing. The lever is connected to the valve by means of a link 24, the arrangement being such that when one end of the lever 23 is depressed the valve will be opened to permit the steam to escape from the tank or reservoir when such escapement is desired for any reason;
The operation of the improved feeder is as follows: When it is desired to feed the tank or reservoir 5, the valve 11 is opened to admit steam into the pipe 10 and the valve 14 is opened to permit the free flow of water from the source of supply to the said pipe 10. The steam passing through the pipe 10 to the reservoir will by suction create a partial vacuum in the pipe 12, and the water from the source of supply will flow into the pipe to compensate for the partial vacuum. This water will be carried by the steam through the pipe 10 into the tank or reservoir and the height of the water in the tank or reservoir may be ascertained by means of the gage 7. When the tank or reservoir is filled, the valve 14; is closed and the valve 18 is open. The steam pressure noW flows through the pipe 10 into the tank or reservoir above the Water level and forces out the Water therein through the pipes 17 and 19, and through the branch 20 to the portion 4: of the boiler. The boiler is provided with the usual Water gage not shown, in order that the Water level'therein may be determined'eXactly. When the reservoir is empty it may be refilled by closing the valveilS' and opening the valve 14. A continuation of these operations Wlll provide the boiler With any desired amount of ater, and it is obvious that the tank or reservoir '5 may be of any desired size. l/Viththe improved boiler feed no um J is re uired nor is there any other pressure necessary than that'of the steam in the boiler. Before refilling the tank or reservoir, the steam pressure is released, this being doneby'clos ng the valve 11 and opening the valve in the casing 22.

The T 13 may be an. ordinary T, since it is obvious that the steam pressure passing. above the open end of the pipe '12 will create a partial vacuum in thesaid pipe "and the Water from the source of supply Will flow in' through the pipe 12 to compensate p for the said partial vacuum.

The improved feed is not disturbed by muddy Water or by Water having foreign bod1es 1n the same, and 1n additlon the device is a fuel saver, since itdoes notrun down the pressure in the boiler when in use. The tank or reservoir is of a strength equal to that of the boiler, since it is designed to Withstand the same internal pressure as that of the boiler.
It Will be noticed from an inspection of the drawing that the pipe 19 is of less diameter than the pipe 17. In practice the'pipe l7fvvill be tvvo inches in diameter While the pipe 19 Will bethree-fourths inch at the point Where it enters the boiler. All of the Water admitted to the boiler by the improved feed is preheated'in the heater 15. Water is pipes 17 and 19. assists in forcing the Water into the boiler. It Will be understood that after the Water is forced from the tank or reservoir into the boiler the valve 22 must an exhaust valve connected With an exhaust valve be opened before the reservoir can be again''' filled.
