JULES CROLLARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK AUSTIN, OF SAME PLACE. I
BOILER-FEEDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,346, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed December 17, 1888. Serial No. 293,895. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, 'JULEs CROLLARD, a citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boiler-Feeders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to boiler-feeders of that kind in which water is drawn into an elevated supply-tank by reason of a partial vacuum formed in the tank by the condensation of steam therein, and has for its object to provide a simple, economical, and convenient apparatus for general service.
The stcanrpipe leading from the boiler to the watersupply tank is provided at its end that is within the boiler with a suitable float-valve, whereby when the water lowers within the boiler a flow of steam into the supply-tank chamber can be automatically established.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents in vertical central section the water-supply tank and a portion of a boiler, the pipes and a tub into which the lower end of the tank supplypipe is introduced being mainly shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a view similar to the preceding figure and shows the float lowered. Fig. 3 shows a vertical section taken centrally through the upper valved end portion of the pipe which serves to supply the tank with water, and also a section taken transversely through said portion of the tank-supply pipe on line 3 3.
The boiler A may be of any suitable construction, and can be arranged in any convenient or desired way. The elevated watersupply tank B can also be supported in any suitable manner, but should be sufficiently remote from the boiler to prevent its becoming heated therefrom, it being desirable to keep the tank sufficiently cool to insure condensation of the steam therein. The water-supply pipe C is arranged to connect with the supply-tank chamber, and is provided with a check or gravity valve, 0, arranged to open toward the tank-chamber and to close when subject to pressure within said chamber, whereby, while steam-pressure within the tank-chamber may close valve 0 of the watersupply pipe C, said valve can be. automatically opened by atmospheric pressure when a partial vacuum is created within the tankchamber.
The feed-pipe D leads from the lower portion of the supply-tank and connects with the lower portion of the boiler. Said feedpipe D is provided with a suitable check or balance valve, as at d, which opens toward the boiler, so as to permit water to flow into the boiler when an excess of pressure exists at the supply side of said valve. The feedpipe is also preferably provided with a cock, cl, at the delivery side of the valve (1, so that should it become necessary to temporarily remove the valve d said cock cl can be closed. The steam-pipe E leads from the upper portion of the boiler to the upper portion of the supply-tank chamber, and said pipe is within the boiler provided with an ordinary or suitable float-valve, F, arranged to close the steampipe'when the water within the boiler rises to a proper height, and, conversely, to open the steam-pipe when the water sinks to some determined point. Then the float valve opens the steam-pipeE, steam from the boiler will be admitted into the supply-tank chamber, wherein the steam-pressure will maintain valve 0 in its normally-closed condition; but should there be at such time a supply of water within the supply tank its weight, added to said steam-pressure, will over-balance ,the pressure at the delivery side of valve d,
and hence open said valve, so as to permit the feed of water-through pipe D to the boiler until the water within the boiler rises to a sufficient height to cause the float-valve to close the steam-pipe E. The condensation of the steam within the supply-tank chamber will create a partial vacuum therein, and hence, should at such time the inlet end of the Water-supply pipe C be submerged in a body of waterfor example, in a suitable quantity of water within an open tub or other receptacle, G-the water will be forced by atmospheric pressure up through pipe C and into the supply-tank, the check-valve 0 being at such time automatically opened by reason of the external atmospheric pressure being in excess of any pressure within the tank. When the flow of water into the supply-tank ceases, the supply-pipe valve 0 will close, and hence the tank will be in readiness for another discharge into the boiler. I can also provide the steam-pipe E with an ordinary cock, e; but, if desired, such cock can be dispensed with, it beingobserved that for automatic work the pipe E need only be provided with the floatvalve, and also that the feed-pipe I) need only be provided with the valve (Z.
hat I claim as my invention is- The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, with a boiler, of the closed supply-tank 3, the steam-pipe E, connecting the boiler with the supply-tank and provided
