ELECTRIC LIGHTING FIXTURE.
APPLICATION men MMLZG. 19M.

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEETc CARL A. BROWN, 0F FOSTORIA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR T0 GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY, CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
ELECTEICLIGHTING FIXTURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19,1915.
Application filed March 26, 1914. Serial No. 827,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fostoria, in the county of Seneca, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Lighting Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric lighting fixtures and more especially to fixtures such as indirect or semi-indirect which comprise a bowl or other inclosure of relatively large diameter suspended from above.
The object of my invention is to provide an efiicient support for the inclosure which will allow the ready removal of same for the purpose of cleaning, and also its ready replacement without disturbing the lamps.
A further object of my invention is to provide in connection with the support for the inclosure a simple supporting means for the incandescent lamps or other light source used inl connection with the fixture which will admit of convenient removal and adjustment.
According to my invention I provide a frame or ring which is adapted to be placed within the upper rim of the inclosure. The said frame carries a number of fingers which extend downwardly therefrom and which are of such shape as to engage the rim of the inclosure. Means are provided whereby the said fingers are movable and adjustable so that they may be loosened for the purpose of removing the inclosure. The said lingers are so fashioned that suspension means, such as chains, may be attached thereto for the purpose of supporting the structure. This insures that the suspension chains will always have the same relative positions and obviates the necessity for rearrangement after removal and upon replacement of the bowl. The frame also carries a series ,of lamp supports which are preferably removably attached thereto so that if it is desired to increase the number of such supports those already mounted on the frame may be readily rearranged. Provision is made whereby the positions of the lamps may be adjusted with respect to the bowl. l
My invention-.will be more clearly understood by referring to the drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the frame and attached parts constituting part of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a partial elevation showing the parts of the fixture.
In the drawing 10 is a ring or frame, preferably of metal. Attached to the said frame and preferably disposed symmetrically with reference thereto are offset and upwardly extending lugs 11. Pivoted to the said lugs are fingers 12 which are hook-shaped and extend downwardly with respect to the frame 10. The lower ends 13 of the said fingers are shaped so as to conform to the rim of the bowl 14 so that when held in engagement therewith they will support the said bowl. The other ends of the fingers 12 consist of lugs 15 which extend over the frame 10 and which are provided with apertures to receive adjusting screws 16. The suspension means or chains 17 engage with the fingers 12 and serves to support the fixture from above, as from the ceiling.
It will be apparent that, when the fingers 12 are in the position shown in full lines in the drawing, in which position they are held by reason of the fact that the adjusting screws 16 bear against the frame 10 and are so adjusted that the fingers 12 are forced against the bowl, the bowl will be held firmly by the suspension chains 17. When it is desired to remove the bowl the adjust-- ing screws 16 are loosened which allows each of the fingers to be swung to the position shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 2. The bowl may then be removed without disturb ing the frame 10 or they suspension chains.
ltemovably attached to the inner side of the frame 10A by means of screws 18 are a series of flexible straps 19 which carry attachments 20 at the ends thereof for receivlnga socket or other supports for incan descent lamps. It will beappaent that by tapping holes in the frame' 10 at the desired places that any number of lamps may be mounted and any desired arrangement may be secured. It will also be apparent that the flexible straps 19 provide a convenient means for adjusting to a certain extent the pesiMI tions of the lamps with respect to the frame, and therefore the bowl of the fixtn 2.
Various modifications of the stru' e disV closed will readily suggest theinsei.es to those skilled in the art and are considered to come within the scope of my invention.
W hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is :---V
1. A fixture-bowl support comprising an annular frame adapted to lie within the upf upper edge of said bowl, fingers pivoted atA their upper portions to said frame and extending below the' saine, and adjustable means for holding said fingers in position for engaging said fixture-bowl.
3. A fixture-bowl support comprising a frame, transversely extending fingers pivoted to said frame and having apertured lugs extending from the ends thereof adjacent to said frame and adjusting screws extending through said apertures and engagin g said frame to hold said fingers in desired positions.
4. In a` lighting fixture, a bowl support' comprising a frameLbowl engaging fingers mounted on' said frame and movable relatively thereto, .suspension means engaging said fingers and means independent of said suspension means for :adjusting the positions of said fingers relative to said frame.
5. In a lighting fixture a bowl support comprising a frame, transversely extending fingers pivotally mounted on said frame, suspension means engaging said fingers and means independent of said suspension means for adjusting the positions of Said fingers relative to the frame.
G. In a lighting fixture, a bowl and a bowl support comprising a frame located within said bowl, fingers movably mounted on said 8. Ina lighting fixture, a bowl support; comprising a'frame adapted to be inserted within the said bowl, adjustable means Y mounted thereon for engaging the said bowl, and lamp supports also mounted upon said 'frame and extending inwardly therefrom.
9. In a lighting fixture, a bowl support comprising a frame adapted to be inserted within the said bowl, adjustable means mounted thereon for engaging the said bowl, and adjustable lamp supports also mounted upon-said frame and extending inwardly therefrom.
10. In a lighting fixture, a .bowl support comprising a frame, means mounted thereon for engaging a bowl and flexible straps having lamp attachments thereon extending inwardly rom said frame.
In wi ness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of March, 1914.
CARL A. BROWN.
