Specification of Letters Patent.

*4 Original application filed July 21,1914, Serial No. 852,168. Divided and this application filedbeeember 0,
- 1914. Serial No. 876,407. ,i
To. all whom it may concern Be it known that we, OSCAR A. SMITH and BENJAMIN F. RINDI-LEISCILfiltlZQHS of the United States,-residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies, of which the following is a specifications This invention relates to dies for use in the castellation of nuts adapted for use in presses such for instance as that shown in our contemporaneously pending application Serial No. 852,168, filed July 21,1914, of which the present application is a division, the object of the invention being to provide 'an improved die which will automatically clear itself, and an improved die carrier for such die.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for holding the nut in proper relation to the slots in the die after it is punched and during successive punching operations.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a reinforced die having a plurality of slots correspondingin number with the number of slots which it is desired to punch v in the nut, and which nut will be revolved with the die. A
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for protecting the punch used in connection with this improved die from the slugs punched from the nut.
In the drawings accompanying and forming partof this specification, Figure 1 is a front view of the die and one of its locking means :v Fig. 2 illustrates the various members of the die and its carrier; Fig. 3. is an enlarged sectional view of a part of the ring shown at the left of Fig. 2: Fig. 4: is a perspective view of a castellated nut; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view. illustrating thedie I in use in-connectio'n with a nut castellating press and puncli and showing the position v of. the die relatively tothe feed plunger and punch.
. Similar characters of reference indicate; corresponding parts n the d tferent; t1gures of. the drawings;
, This improved die 2 nut or other piece to.be slotted, theseslots isprovided with as many slots 3 as it is desired to punch 1n the blank in the manner hereinafter described. These radial slots are formed in an annular pro ect1on or what may becalleda hub 5 of the die, and at their outer ends thesl'ots communicate with an annular recess or clearance way 6, so that the slugs punched out of the nut or other piece being operated upon, the punch working, it Willbe understood, from the center of the hole in the nut i;
outwardly and through a slot in the die, will drop clearof both the punch and the die by reason of this clearance way. To insure that the. slugs are not retained inside the groove or clearance way of the die and so be carried up and drop into the inside of the die and interfere with thepunchduring the indexing of the die, a guard .7 of any suitable form may be used. In the present instance this guard is'adapted to fit loosely over the punch, and for this purpose is pro- 'which is provided with as many indexing and locking recesses or grooves 11 as'there are slots in the die. In other, words,.th e number of grooves or recesses in the ring corresponds with the number of slots inthe die, and of course these slots correspond in number with the number of slots that the nut, is to have. The die andthe ring which will hereinafter be called the index ring, since it is by this means in part that the die is indexed, are maintained in proper re- ,lation by means of a locating pin 12 (see Fig. 5) fitting into registeringgrooves of the ring and die respectively. A. holder plate or ring 13 is provided for holding the die in position inrthe ring 10, and for this purpose the holder plate is provided with a' plurality of elongated slots lit for the reception of bolts 15 which pass into the index ring 10. QAs the nut blanks are 'fedinto position for slotting they passthrough the axiahopcning' in the holder plate 13, and this holder plate is providcd wltli' nut positio'ning or gripping means 111 the form of a pair of spring tensioned aws 1.0 dovetailed into i the holder plate, and tension on these jaws is obtained by expansion springs 17 (see Fig. 3') placed within a recess in the holder plate and having a bearing at oneend on a screwin the endof said recess and at its oppositev end on a stud 19 carried by said aws; and pro ecting into the recess, and this;
holder plate is fastened by means of the ;bolts 15 hereinbetore referred to, to the front face of the index ring and revolyes with it. .The index ring is carried by a steel-bearing ring 20, which is supported .in-"a bracket 21, shown in section in Fig. 5, and which ring is effective to take up any wear that may occur between the index ring -'plate; 13 isadjustable by means of thef ielon- 10 and the holderplate 13. The holder gated-Lslots 14: hereinbefore referred to,
;.whereby the spring jaws 16 will be properly positioned, so that the nuts or other blanks being fed .through the jaws thereof will 1v come in exact alinem'ent with the punch and .die when the die is locked in position. As the nuts or other pieces are forced between r the jaws 16 these jaws may expand slightly '25 to permit of the passage of a corner of the nut should it not be fed exactly straight with the face of the jaw, but the springsare strong enough to straighten the piece and to make a flat bearing between the face of the jaw and the side 01f the blank or nut. .We claim as our invention:
