Abstract
738,826. Chucks. HARDINGE MACHINE TOOLS, Ltd. July 21, 1953 [Sept. 10, 1952], No. 22750/52. Class 83 (3). In a bevel-closing chuck of the kind in which a member carries a number of jaws spaced apart around its periphery, a hollow jawcarrying member is provided with slots, the side walls of which are formed with sockets, and separately-formed jaws are provided in the slots with laterally extending pins engaging said sockets so that their inner and outer edges project respectively inwardly and outwardly from the jaw-carrying member, and so that they may have radial movement and substantially no axial movement relatively to the jawcarrying member. Jaws 14, Figs. 1 and 2, are mounted on pins 15 in slots 13 in a jawcarrier 10, 11 longitudinally slotted also at 12. The pins engage chordal grooves 16 in the member. In a modification, Fig. 3, the jaws 36 are mounted in slots 25 in a carrier 21 arranged in a socket 31 of a mandrel 32, the jaws being moved inwardly by rotation of a cap 34. In a further modification, Figs. 6 and 7, the ends of the pins 29 are of square section and engage flat-sided grooves 28 in the carrier with square cut bottoms. The jaws are held in position by spring clips 42. The jaws may be of hardened steel, copper, brass or plastic, and the carrier may be separately heat treated.
