Abstract

1385426 Jointing by stamping DANIELS MFG CORP 19 May 1972 [20 May 1971] 23745/72 Heading B3Q [Also in Division B4] A turret 36, Fig. 1, is movable axially relatively to a crimping tool 12 for locating electrical contacts to be crimped, the turret having at least one contact aperture and means being provided for locating the turret in different axial positions. As shown, Fig. 4, the turrethousing 40 is counterbored to locate over a mounting ring on the crimping tool to which it is fixed by bolts 62 and a locating pin. There are four contact apertures 112, Fig. 5, in the turret each having a stop-sleeve 116 to receive contacts of different sizes, flanges 118 on the sleeves 116 being pressed by springs 120 of different rates against seatings 114 from which they may move upon elongation of the contact due to crimping. Colour-coded grooves 130 in the turret indicate the axial position of the turret which is set by engagement in one of a number of annular grooves 128 of an arcuate tooth 102 on a spring- pressed latch 94. A similar latch 96 (also in Fig. 6, not shown) has an axial tooth 104 for engaging one of four axial indexing grooves 113, Fig. 4, which locate the turret with the various contact apertures in alignment with the crimping axis. Wire sizes 10-18 may be marked on the turret, Fig. 1; a single contact may be crimped in different axial locations on successive operations. Instead of using resiliently mounted contact sleeves the turret itself may move endwise in its housing upon elongation of a contact. In a first example of this form, Fig. 9, a catch 250 locating the turret 232 axially in its housing 212 is pressed axially by a spring 268 which permits limited endwise movement of the turret. The catch 250 has a tooth 248 and the annular grooves 242 for axial location have index pockets 246 so that when the tooth 248 engages a pocket 246 the single catch both axially locates and indexes the turret. The contacts are received in blind bores (230), Fig. 8 (not shown), in the turret. In a second example of resiliently mounted turret, Figs. 11 and 13, indexing and axial positioning are performed by a plate 344 the bifurcated end of which engages pairs of segmental slots 339 in the turret. The plate is pressed axially and radially by axial springs (365, 367), Fig. 14 (not shown), acting against balls which engage conical recesses (358) in the plate to bias it radially. The turret is correctly indexed when the outer edge of the plate 344 is flush with the surface of the turret-housing 312.
