Be it known that I, LEVI So -iwoYER, a citizen of'the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. new, and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of farriery and particularly to horseshoes The primary object of the invention is the provision of a calk which may be quickly applied to or removed from the shoe and which will be so constructed asto effectually resist the strains and jars which may be im parted thereto and which will include means whereby the calk will be positively held against derangement from the shoe.
Another object of the invention is the provision-of a fastening device which may be mounted flush in the calk and secured in the shoe in such manner as will hold the calk in a proper applied position.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

The shoe 1 is provided at its toe end with a medial extension 2, which extends in the direction of the heel of the shoeandwhich is provided with a forwardly threaded passage 3 and a rear passage 4 having smooth walls, both of said passages being extended to the full depth or thickness of the shoe, as clearly shown. The toe calk 5 comprises a metallic body 6, which underlies the shoe at the toe end thereof and which is provided with an extension 7 conforming with the configuration of the extension 2, and as illustrated said extension 7 is provided with an integral cylindrical lug '8 corresponding with the formation of the passage 4: and

The toe call: 22 illustrated in Fig. 6 is formed to provide companion depending lugs 24: and an intervening vertically disposed lug 25, the latter being equivalent of the lug 16 shown in Fig. 1. It is of course to be understood that the various forms of calks shown can be constructed in any desired dimensions.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is As a new article of manufacture, a toe calk constructed of a single blank of material formed to provide spaced depending lugs, and an intermediate vertically rising lug, and a horizontal body portion provided with an integral rearwardly located lug and a forwardly located vertical passage, the passage being located in the same longitudinal line with the lug, the bottomsurface of the horizontal portion being provided with a circular recess opening directly into said passage.
