UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE \V. EMPLE, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ATTACHING TOE-WEIGHTS TO HORSESHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,647, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed September 20, 1890. Serial No. 365,642. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. \VEMPLE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching ToelVeights to Horseshoes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to toeweights for horseshoes; and it consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings, and to the claim hereinafter given, and in which my invention is clearly pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan of a horseshoe with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section online m a: on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of a portion of the toe end of the shoe, with the toe-weight and its fastening-bolt removed, and Fig. 4 is an ele- Vation of the inner side of the toe-weight.
A is the main body of the horseshoe, of a well-known construction for summer wear, except that it has formed upon its front or toe end the clip or lug a, which projects nearly its whole thickness beyond the curve of the outer edge of the main body of the shoe, as shown in Fig. 3. The clip a projects upward above the upper surface of the shoe A, has its front or outer face inclined to a vertical line, and its lower or under surface about midway of the thickness of said shoe, as shown in Fig. 1. An oblique hole bis drilled through said clip, the lower portion of which is enlarged by countersinking or counterboring, as shown in Fig. 1.
B is the toe-weight, having its outer face convex and its inner face concaved to fit the front of the hoof, and has formed in said inner surface at its lower end the deeper concavity c, shaped to fit a portion of the outer surface of the clip a, as shown in Fig. 1.
The weight B has formed therein the bolthole d, in which and the hole I) in the clip a is fitted the bolt 6, the head 6 of which is made to fit the enlarged lower portion of the hole I), as shown in Fig. 1. The upper portion of the bolt 6 is threaded and has fitted thereto the nut f, by which the toe-weight B is firmly secured in place.
The upper end of the toe--weight has formed therein a transverse groove 9 to receive the lip h',projecting downward from the washer h,the opposite edge of which is turned upward against a fiat side of the nutfafter it has been screwed down close upon said washer, so that the nut cannot become unscrewed until the upwardly-turned lip 7L is turned down again, which may be done Whenever it is desired to remove the toe-weight.
The clip a serves the double purpose of affording a means of attaching the toe-weight and a stop or abutment to bear against the toe of the hoof and relieve the nails by which the shoe is secured to the hoof from a portion, at least, of the strain to which they would otherwise be subjected when the toe of the shoe strikes ablow upon the pavement or hard grou 11d. By connecting the clip a only to the upper portion of the shoe-body and enlarging the hole I) to receive the head e of the bolt 6 the liability of the fastenings of the toe-weight becoming worn away, so as to render the toeweight insecure and liable to be detached, is very much lessened.
I claim In combination with the main body of a horseshoe, the clip at, having its lower side about midway of the vertical thickness of said main body and provided with the oblique hole I), the lower end of which is enlarged, the toeweight B, having the recess 0 in its innerfacc to receive the clip a and provided with the hole d, the bolt 6, provided with the head 6', adapted to fit the enlarged portion of the hole I), and the nut f, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 15th day of September, A. D. 1890.
GEORGE W. WEMPLE.
