Secured to the shaft or pintle oft the impression-roller at opposite ends of the latter, are triii-arlns 51, each adapted to have its end tapered and to travel in contact with the trip-rails 26 during certain portions of the movements of the carrier. The carrier has preferably a reciprocating movement and when the machine is in operation tor printing, said trip-arms ride over the opposite ends of said rails. Said trip-arms are somewhat longer than the space between the upper faces of the tripaails 26 and the true axis ot the impression-roller when the latter is directl)v over said rails; consequently, the said arms are inclined in opposite directions (hiringr opposite movements of the carrier and have a dragging action over said rails. The triparms are therefore inclined rearward during the forward movement of the carrier and forward during the rearward movement thereof and this change ot' inclination is effected at the ends of the opposite carrier movements. and as the said arms are fastened to the shaft or spindle or" the impression-roller and the latter is loosely on the shaft and eccentrically journaled, said shaft is caused to rock and is so positioned that it moves the impression roller into and out of springs is inactive when the other is active. y
thus preventing counteraction and assuring a positive trip at all times.
As stated. one of the trip-rails 2G is connected to the slide-head 30 and therefore movable with it so that it may he moved lengthwise on the hed 12. This is done to bring the rear end of said rail beyond the rearmost point which the coacting triparin 5l will assume, consequent-ly said arm cannot move over the end of said rail when the latter is moved rearward, and when said rail. is thus positioned. the trip-arms retain their` forward inclination and are forced over and in Contact 'with said rail without change of position. By this means. the impression-roller is held elevated or out ot' printing position, thus permitting the machine to run idle so as to enable the operator to remove the printed paper from the paperreceiver. adjust the machine for printing different size paper. stack up a further supply of paper. and attend to such other inatters as are necessarily required when operating a machine of this character.
The carrier 37 is reciprocated h v means of tiro chains 54 having opposite ends fastened to the sides il of the front inemher 38 thereof, as liest shown in Fig. These chains are driven by chain-wheels 55 secured to a transverse-shaft 56 journaled in the sides of the machine at or near their front ends, said chains passing' around said wheels and around groored wheels 57 rotatable on stub-axles 58 secured to said sides near their rear ends. Shaft 5G projects through one side of the machine and has a gear-wheel 39 secured thereto which is rotated intermittently in opposite directions hy a gear rack (l0 having a slidehlock 6l at one end which is guided for reciprocating movement hetvveen two guide-hars 62, (i3. secured to the side of the :trame or hody.
A. master-shaft (il is iournaled in the sides of said frame or body. preferably at a point midway between its ends. said shaft being of a length to protrude from opposite sides of said frame. To one end ot' said shaft. a comparatively heavy operating or driving- Wheel is secured `which has a handle (lo a. distance from its axis so as to obtain the necessary leverage to easily operate the niachine. A wheel oi' the type mentioned acts as a ily-wheel and its momentum assures a llt quick reverse action of the Several parts without added exertion on the part of the operator. Said operating 0r driving-Wheel has a circumferential groove 67 to receive a belt when it is desired to operate the machine by power. To the opposite end of said master-shaft. a pinion (i8 is secured which is in mesh with a gear-wheel 69 secured to a shaft 70 journaled in the side of the frame or body.
Pivotall),y connected at one end to said gear-wheel 69 is a pitman 7G having its opposite end pivotally connected to theslideblock (il so that when said wheel is rotated, said slide-block and its gear-rack are reciprocated and cause rot-ation of the shaft 5G, and the consequent reciprocation of the When it is desired to print medium size forms, the pivot-screw connecting the pitman a with the gear-wheel 69, may be passed through a pivot-hole 71 in the pitman, and when short forms or postal cards are to be printed, said pivot-screw may be passed through a pivot-hole 72 in said pitman. By regulating the movement of the carrier to the size of the form to be printed, a given number of sheets can be printed in a much shorter period ol" time and considerable wear on the machine will be eliminated by dispensing with idle movements.
Held to the frame or bony of the machine in any suitable manner isa paper shelf 73. onto which a stack of paper 7i to be printed piled. rllhis shellE is preferably positioned in a plane above` the frame or bed and at its rear end it has an upstanding wall 75. while at its outer longitudinal edge it has an upwardly and inwardly-directed wall TG. rlhe sheets of paper are piled on said shelf with contiguous edges against said walls and by slanting the longitudinal wall 'TG inward, the sheets are arranged so that the top sheet can easily be removed.
TT designates a paper-support or positioner which is adjustably held at the front end ot' the machine in a plane above the printing surface and between the sides of the frame or body. Said support or positioner comprises a flat bottom 78, side walls 79 provided at 'their rear portions with grooves 80, and a front wall 8l. rl`he flanges 18 at the upper ends of the sides of the frame 9 fit into said grooves so that said support or positioner ma?T be adjusted lengthwise on said frame. The bottom 78 has a pair of transverse slots 82 adjacent one side wall through which curved upwardlydirected gage-arms 83 are passed, said arms having collars 8l near their lower ends which rest upon said bottom and their lower ends are threaded for application thereto of securing-nuts 85. A longitudinal gage-bar 86 is located near the opposite side wall and it has a pair of threaded studs 87 which extend through transverse slots 88 in said bottom and have nuts S9 applied thereto. The
age-arms 83 and the gage-bar 8G are theretore movable transversely so as to permit their being adjusted to gage sheets of paper of various widths. The gage-arms 83 have their upper end curved toward the gage-bar 86 so that when placing a sheet of paper upon the support or positioner7 one longitudinal edge thereof is placed against said gage-bar and when releasing the sheet, it gravitates with the opposite edge traveling` along the curved arms. The sheet is thus placed on the bottom of the support or positioner with opposite longitudinal edges against said arms and bar.
The paper feeding-mechanism comprises a roller 90 and a gripper 91. Said roller has eccentric journals 92 journaled in the bearing boxes li-, and it has also, by preference, a sectional Contact surface formed by short separated contact members 93. At one end, said eccentrically-mounted roller has a triparm 94 secured thereto which rides over and in contact with the trip-rail and at its other end it has a torsion spring 95 surrounding its spindle. One end of said spring is secured to the roller and its other end to the side of the carrier. Said triparm is inclined rearward and held in contact with said rail by the spring 95. which at all times exerts its 'force to rock said roller. but as the trip arm is limited in its downward movement b v said tri p-rail. it prevents rocking of said roller until after said triparm rides over the rear end of said triprail, at which time said trip-arm is free to move in a forward direction and cannot then act to check the action of said spring. During the forward movement of the carrier, said trip-arm rides over the end of said trip-rail and is caused'to swing rearward so that the roller is rocked in an opposite direction and the spring 95 is placed under tension. The trip-arm riding in contact with the upper face of said rail. retains the roller and therspring in position until the` carrier again approaches the end of the rearward movement. It is to be noted that the trip-arm 94 does not ride over the front end of the trip-rail 25 and consequently oscillates or rocks only at the end of its rearward movement.
The gripper is best shown in Fig. and it comprises a bar 96 ha :ing a `forwardlydirected gripping-ledge 97 which lies in a plane beneath the roller 90. Said gripper has two upwardly-directed arms t8 which are slotted, as at 99. and passing through Said slots and taking into an oscillating yoke 100 are screws 101. Said slots and screws permit the gripper to be adjusted on said yoke for the purpose of bringing the gripping-ledge 97 in proper relation to said roller. Said yoke comprises a cross-bar 102 lying in front of the cross-bar 42 of the car rier and .rearwardly extending arms 103 pivotally secured to the sides 41 of said carrier, as at 104. One of said arms is extended beyond its pivotal point and at its rear end has a laterally directed toe or rider 105 which is adapted, at certain points in the movement of said carrier to engage a tripdevice 10G. Said toe or rider preferably has its upper and lower face made convex, for a purpose to appear hereinafter. Said tripdevice is located on one of the flanges 18 at the upper edge of the frame or body directly in rear of the slide-head 30, and it comprises a spring tongue or arm 107 inclined rearward and having its rear end normally in Contact with said flange and its front end elevated and separated from said flange by au intervening space 108, and a suitable support- 100 fastened to said flange to hold said arm in proper position. This trip-device is adjustable lengthwise on said flange or the frame and. it is preferably constructed of a single piece of sheet-metal bent into such shape as to provide a base member 110 having longitudinal slots 111 through which screws are passed that take into said flange or frame` an upright or supportingmember 112 and an inwardly-directed tripmember 113 separated throughout the greater portion of its length from said supporting-member by a slit 114 to form the spring-tongue 107. The front end of said trip-member has its upper face in the same horizontal plane as the upper face of the .rearward extension 36 of the bearing-block so that. when the slide-head 30 carrying said extension comes in Contact with the front end of the trip-device 106 it occupies the space normally left between the two. The purpose of this will now be explained.
As shown in Figs. '-1, 15, 16 and 17, the sheet of paper to be printed is laid upon the paper-support or positioner with its rear marginal portion overhanging the rear edge of said support. As the carrier moves forward, the gripping-roller 90 and gripper 91 are separated owing to the toe or rider 105 having moved forward onto the trip-device 106, which causes the gripping-ledge 97 to move away from the gripping-roller and consequently the latter is carried above the over-hanging portion of the sheet of paper while the gripping-ledge moves underneath the saine. As lthe carrier reaches the end of its forward movement, the toe or rider 105 drops over the elevated front edge of said trip-device and a dat spring 115, which is secured to the underside of the cross-bar 42 of the carrier and bears with itsv free end against the lower edge of the yoke 100, causes the gripping-ledge 97 to quickly rise and grip the paper between it and said gripping-roller. As soon as this is accomplished, the carrier commences its rear movement,

which causes the sheet of' paper to be drawn rearward onto the type-form. During this rearward movement. the toe or rider 105 is held in Contact with the upper face ot' the flange 18, and passes. during the initial portion of its return movement. under the spring-tongue 107 of the trip-device, which tongue is deflected upward thereby to' permit said toe or rider to pass out under the rear end of said tongue. As said carrier approaches the end of its rearward movement, the trip-arm 91 rides over theV rear end of the trip-rail 25 and permits the torsionspring around the spindle of the grippingroller to expend its force for the purpose of rocking said roller, which latter thereupon acts against the sheet of paper gripped between it and the gripping ledge and forces the paper forwardly during the last-portion of the rearward movement of the carrier. The throw of the eccentrically-mounted roller is downward and consequently while rocking to eject the paper, the latter is brought closer to the type-form so that the drop of. the sheet is reduced to the minimum. The movement of the sheet forward while the carrier completes its rearward movement, is so timed relative to the travel of the carrier rearward, that when the carrier reachesacertain point in its rearward movement, the sheet to be printed does not move with reference to the length of the bed, and as it clears the gripping-ledge, it gravitates to an exact position on the type-form. Owing to this action, the sheet will not float in the air and finally7 land at uncertain points...`-
on the type-form.
`When it is desired to throw the paper feeding-mechanism out of action, the slidehead 30 is moved rearward to bring the rearward extension 36 thereof against the front or elevated end of the trip-device 106 so that when the carrier is reciproeated the toe or rider will ride up the spring-tongue 10T and onto the extension 36 of the bearing block 35, thus-holding the gripping-ledge 9T in lowered position until said toe or rider travels rearward over said spring-tongue: but before said toe or rider leaves said spring-tongue, the paper feeding-mechanism will have been moved rearward out of' range of the overlianging portion of paper on the paper-support or positioner.
By making the upper and lower faces of the toe or rider 105 convex, it will more readily ride up'the spring-tongue 107 and will also act more effectively in raising the rear end of said tongue when passing under it.
To the rear member 39 of the carrier. the It consists of a rock-bar 116, a trip-arm 11T. a trip-device 118, a paper-ledge 119 extending forward from the lower edge of the crossbar 46, and agrippng-roller 120 coperatling with said paper-ledge and operatively connected with said rock-bar. The rock-bar 116 has its ends journaled in the sides 45 of said rear member of the carrier and it has the trip-arm 117 secured to one end thereof. Said trip-arm has a laterally-extending stud or rider 121 adapted for (zo-action with the trip-device 118 which is similar in construction to the trip-device 106 hereinabove described. The trip-device 118 is secured to the upper edge of one side of the frame or body 9 and has a spring-tongue 122 inclined rearward from an elevated point so that when the carrier is moved forward, the stud or rider 121 rides up onto said spring tongue and causes the rock-bar 116 to rock in one direction and as said stud or rider reaches the elevated front end 0f said trip-device, it gravitates and causes said rock-bar to rock in an opposite direction. This action takes place as the carrier approaches the end of its forward movement and simultaneously with the corresponding action of the toe or stud 105 of the paper-feeding mechanism. During the initial portion of the rearward movement of the carrier, the stud or rider 121 passes underneath the spring-tongue 1 22 and causes the latter to be deflected upward.
Secured to the rock-bar 116 are two rearwardly and downwardly directed supporting-arms 123 in which is journaled the spindle of the gripping-roller 120. Surrounding said spindle at one end is a torsion spring 124C having one end secured to the body 0f the roller and its opposite end to the adjacent supporting-arm. At its other end, said spindle has a lever 125 secured thereto to which is secured one en'd of a rod 126 which extends forward and has its other end secured toa slide-bar 127 on one of the rods 10 connecting the front and rear members of the carrier.
The gripping-roller is preferably made in sections, as shown, and it is of Suiicient weight to normally rest upon the paperledge 119 so that the friction or resistance created thereby will prevent release of the power stored in the spring 121.
When the carrier reaches the end of its rearward movement, the slide-bar 127 comes in contact with 'the fixed trip-arm 128 secured to the frame 9 of the machine and is therefore moved forward on said carrier. The action of said slide-bar is transmitted to the lever 125 through the medium of the rod 126, which in turn causes the grippingroller to rock.
Arranged transversely over the chase is a paper support 129 upon which the rear end of the sheet of paper rests. This support is formed of a strip of metal having its ends bent downward, as at 130, 131, one 0f said downwardlv bent ends being longer than the other. The long end 130 is clamped between one side bar of the chase 22 and the friction strip 24, while the short end rests upon the other side bar of said chase, as best shown in Fig. 24. The purpose of this support is to hold the rear marginal portion of the sheet of paper elevated above the typeform, or more particularly, above the furniture in the chase so that when the carrier moves forward and approaches the end of its movement, the paper-ledge 119 will pass underneath the rear marginal portion of the printed sheet resting on the type-form, and simultaneously therewith the trip-arm 117 rides up the trip-device 1.18 so that the gripping-roller is elevated out of Contact with the paper-ledge 119 and moves forward in a plane above the rear end of the sheet of paper. TWhen the trip-arm 117 passes over the elevated front end of said trip-device. the gripping-roller gravitates and grips the sheet of paper between it and said paperledge, drawing the paper rearward during the rearward movement of the carrier until the slide-bar 127 engages the fixed trip-arm 128 and causes said roller to rock, whereupon the sheet is forced out from between said roller and said paper-ledge `so that it may drop into the paper-receiver beneath. It will be noticed that when the slide-bar 127 is forced forward it causes the gripping-roller to rock in one direction and the torsion spring 124 to be placed under tension. and as the trip-arm 127 rides up the trip-device 118, the gripping-roller is elevated free of the paper-ledge 119 and caused to rock in the opposite direction by the act-ion of said spring.
ihile the carrier may be guided in its movements in any practicable manner. 1 prefer the use of guide-rollers 132 which are arranged in sets of three at each side of the carrier, two being in the same horiaontal plane and rotatably mounted on stub-shafts 133secured in the sides -11 of the carrier and the third being loosely positioned above and resting on the two supported on said shafts. The guide-rollers travel on the vieldinglysupported tracks 11. while the upper roller rolls on said lower rollers and also rolls in Contact with the flange 18 above. This construction assures an even impression and eliminates all play between the carrier and the frame.
Any suitable inking-device or medium may be employed to ink the type-form. but I prefer to employ an inked ribbon 13-1, which is placed over the type-form and onto which the sheets of paper are to be placed so that the pressure of the impression-roller 17 against the paper will cause the imprint of the type to be made through said ribbon. Opposite ends of said ribbon are fastened to ribbon-rollers 135. 136, arranged at opposite ends of the bed 12` and the ribbon is wound from one roller onto the other by means of suitable mechanism,
so that a gradual feeding of the ribbon over the type-form is obtained. The mechanism for feeding' the ribbon may have a trip-arm 137 to be engaged by some part of the carrier and cause movement of said ribbon. As the feeding of the inked ribbon forms no part of my invention, I do not deem it necessar v to enter into a detail description of the same.
Although I have, in describing'the construction and relative arrangement of the several parts of the machine, made clear their operation, I will now proceed to give a brief step-b v-step description of the operation Preparatory to printing, the gagearm 83 and the gage-bar 86 are set to the width of the paper to be printed upon, the paper is stacked upon the paper-shelf 73, and the carrier moved slowly forward so that the front end thereof will engage the rear edge of the paper-support or positioner TT and move the same to the proper position for placing the sheets of paper relative to the feeding-mechanism so that the successive sheet-s placed upon said support or positioner will always be gripped by the gripper 91 and roller 90, at exactly the same points, The printing operation can then be started. The operator feeds the sheets of paper from the stack on the paper-shelf 73 and carelessly drops them onto the support or positioner 7T between the gage-arms 88 and the gage-bar 86 which serve to properly position the sheets laterally. W'hen operating the machine, the operator uses his left hand to rotate the operating wheel and his right to place the sheets of paper upon said support or positioner, but when the machine is operated by power, he may use either hand to place the paper on said support or positioner. When the carrier moves forward and approaches the end of such movement, the gripper 91. is moved away from the gripping-roller 90 so as to provide an intervening-space between the two. rl`his action caused by the oscillating voke 100, to which said gripper is secured` having its toe or rider 105 travel onto the tripdevice 106. As the carrier approaches the end of its forward movement, said gripper and roller pass on opposite sides ot the projecting marginal portion ot' the sheet to be fed lto the type-form and in the event of said sheet projecting more than the exact distance intended for it, the gripper 91 strikes the edge thereof and forces it forward on the support or positioner. As thev toe or rider travels over the elevated front edge of the trip-device 106, the gripper rises to grip the sheet between it and its cooperating roller. `This is done at. the instant the carrier is ready for its rearward movement, and as-it is moved rearward it carries the sheet with it and delivers it to the type-form. The trip-arm 94 passing over the rear end of the trip-rail 25 causes the gripping-roller to rock and eject the sheet of paper from the feeding-mechanism, as and in the manner above specified. During said rearward movement of t-he carrier, the impression-roller 17 is held out of printing-position by theI trip- arms 51, 52, riding rearward over the trip-rails 26 but as said trip-arms pass over the rear ends of said rails, they are permitted to swing through an arc of a circle. This movement ot' the trip- arms 51, 52, causes the eccentricallymounted impression-roller to rock and move into printing position, so that it rides over the sheet of paper fed onto the type-form witlrthe proper pressure to cause it to receive the imprint. of said form.
During the reciprocating movement of the carrier, caused by the gear-rack (30 of the driving-mechanism rotating the gear-wheel 59 in opposite .directions which in turn causes the chain-wheels around which the chains .il pass to rotate in a similar manner, the operator will have had time to deposit a second sheet upon the paper-supporter or positioner, and when the carrier again approaches the end of its forward movement, the feeding-mechanism is placed into action to draw the second sheet onto the type-form, but before the carrier commenoes its rearward movement the impression-roller will have been moved out of printing-position b vreason ot' the trip- arms 51, 52, passing over the front ends of the trip-rails Q6 to permit them to swing through an arc of a circle.
Simultaneously with the gripping of the sheet upon the support or positioner T7, the printed sheet on the type-form is engaged by the delivery-mechanism and drawn rearward to be delivered into the paper-receiver. This is done by the trip-arm 11T passing over the trip-device 118 and causingr the gripping-roller 120 to be elevated so that it will pass over the rear end of the printed sheet of paper while the paper ledge passes under the same. llhen the trip-arm 11T drops oli the front elevated end of the tripdevice 118, the roller 120 drops onto the paper to grip said end between it and said paper-ledge, and during the rearward movement of said carrier, it draws the printed sheet off the type-form. When the carrier approaches the end of its rearward movement, the slide-bar 127 engages the fixed trip-arm 128, causing the roller 120 to be rocked to eject the paper and permit it to drop into the paper-receiver.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is,-
1. Two members coperating to print upon a sheet of paper and a carrier movable back and forth over one of said members and supporting the other; combined with paper delivery-mechanism supported by said carrier and comprising two co-acting gripping members, one of said members having a curved gripping face and the other a flat gripping face.
2. Two members coperating to print upon a sheet of paper and being relatively movable; combined with paper deliverymechanism movable with one of said members and comprising two co-acting grippingmembers, one being rotatable and having a curved gripping surface and the other being non-rotatable.
3. Two members coperating to print upon a sheet of paper and a carrier movable back and forth over one of said members and supporting the other; combined with paper feeding-mechanism, supported bv sald carrier and comprising two co-acting gripping-members, one of said members being rotatable and the other being movable toward and from said rotatable member.
4. Two members coperating to print upon a sheet of paper and being relatively movable; combined with paper feedingmechanism movable with one of said members and comprising two co-acting grip- Y, vping-members, one being rotatable and having a curved gripping-surface and the other being non-rotatable.
5. In a printing machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, a movable impression member, an inking device, a reciprocating paper feeding mechanism movable with said impression roller and placed into action after times of printing, said feed-- ing mechanism being adapted tocarry the sheets of paper onto said form carrying member preparatory to printing.
6. In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, an impression-member, means for causing said impression member to travel in contact with said form-carrying member, paper feedingmechanism traveling with said impressionmember and adapted to carry the sheets of paper to said form-carrying member and means to cause the feeding-mechanism to release the sheet of paper when positioned for printing.
7. Two members coperating to print upon a sheet of paper; combined with paper feeding-mechanism comprising an eccentrically-mounted roller, a gripper coperating with said roller, and means to give said roller a slight rotary motion at a certain time in the act of feeding a sheet of paper.
8. Two members coperating to print upon a sheet of paper; combined with paper feedingmechanism comprising a roller mounted to permit of rotary movement, a flat gripper cooperating with said roller to grip a sheet of paper, and means to cause said roller to rotate only at a certain time in the act of feeding the paper.
9. In a printing-machine, the combination menace with two members coperating to print upon a sheet of paper, of paper-carrying mechanism comprising two gripping-members, one movable relative to the other to grip a .sheet of paper and one rotatable only at intervals to eject the sheet trom b'ttween said gripping-members.
10. In a printing machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, an impression member coperating therewith to print upon a sheet of paper, and paper feeding mechanism traversing said form-carrying member and adapted to release the sheet of paper after printing, said mechanism embodying means acting when releasing the sheet of paper to remove the same in a direction opposite to that in which it is traveling.
11. In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, an impression-member, traveling paper feedingmechanism comprising a gripper movable toward and from said form-carrying meniber and a roller against which said gripper is adapted to move to grip a sheet of paper, and means to cause said roller to rotate at a certain point in the movement of said feeding mechanism.
12. In a printing machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, an impression member traversing said form-carrying member, and two paper-*carrying devices traveling in a plane parallel and above said form-carrying member, one acting to carry sheets of paper onto said form-carrying member to be printed and the other acting to carry the printed `sheets of paper away from said form-carryinr member.
13. In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, a traveling-carrier movable relative thereto, an impression-roller mounted in said carrier 'and movable into and out of printing position` a gripper held to said carrier and vertically movable thereon, a gripping-roller rotatably mounted in said carrier and cooperating with said gripper to grip a sheet of paper, and means to actuate said gripper and said gripping-roller at certain points in the movement of said carrier.
14. In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, a traveling-carrier movable relative thereto, an impression-roller mounted in said carrier and movable into and out of printing position, a gripper held to said carrier and vertically movable thereon, a gripping-roller rotatably mounted in said carrier toward which said gripper-is adapted to move to grip a sheet of paper between the two at a predetermined point in the movement of said carrier, a triparm secured to said roller, and a riding surface over which said arm travels and over the end of which itwill pass to cause said roller to rotate at a second predetermined point in the movement of said carrier, as and for the purpose described.
15. In a printing-machine, the combination with a flat form-carrying member, a traveling-carrier,and an impression-member on said carrier movable toward and from said form-carrying member, of a grippingdevice also on said carrier and comprising a pair of paper gripping-members, a trip-' device on said form-carrying membena triparm connected with said gripping-device and adapted to engage said trip-device to cause said gripping-device to grip a sheet of paper. and means to cause the sheet of paper to be released from said gripping-device- 16. In a printing-machine, the combination with a flat form-carrying member, a traveling-carrier, and an impression-member on said carrier, of a gripping-device also on said carrier and comprising a verticallymovable gripper having a horizontal paperledge. a roller above said paper-ledge having its spindle journaled in said carrier, a spring surrounding said spindle and having one end secured to said roller and its other end to said carrier, an oscillating element on said carrier supporting said gripper, a trip-device on ythe form-carrying member in the path of said oscillating member and serving to cause said gripper to move toward and from said roller at certain points in the movement of said carrier, and means to cause said roller to rotate ata certain point in the movement of said carrier.
i7. In a printing-machine, the combination with a flat form-carrying member, a traveling-carrier, and an impression-member on said carrier, of a gripping-device also on said carrier and comprising a vertically movable-gripper having a 'horizontal paperledge, a roller above said paper-ledge having its spindle journaled in said carrier, a spring surrounding said spindle and having one end secured to said roller and its-other end to said carrier. means to cause said gripper to move vertically toward and from said roller at certain points in the movement of said carrier, a trip-arm on the spindle oi said roller, and a trip-rail on said form-carrying member against which said trip-arm bears and over the end of which it passes. said spring causing said roller to rotaie in one direction when said trip-arm passes over the end of said trip-rail and said trip-arm causing said spring to be placed under tension and said roller to rotate in the opposite direction when passing onto said trip-rail.
18. In a printing-machine, the combination with a fiat form-carrying member, a reciprocating carrier, and an impressionmember on said carrier coperating with said form-carrying member, of grippingmechanism including a movable part also on said carrier, and a trip-device on said formcarrying member in the path. of the movable part of said gripping-mechanism, said tripdevice including an inclined member over which said movable part travels when said carrier moves in' one direction and under which it travels when the carrier moves in the opposite direction.
19. In a printing-machine, the combination with a fiat form-carrying member, a reciprocating carrier, and an impressionmember on said carrier coperating with said form-carrying member, of grippingmechanism including a movable part also on said carrier, and a trip-device on saidformcarrying member in the path of the movable part of said grippiiig-mechanism, said trip-device having an inclined spring tongue over which said movable part is adapted to travel when the carrier moves in one direction and under which it travels when the carrier moves in the opposite direction, said tongue being deiiected upward by said movable part when traveling under it.
20.111 a printing-machine, the combination with a' flat form-carrying member, a reciprocating carrier, and an impression-member on said carrier coperating with said form-carrying member, oi gripping-mechanism including a movable part also on said carrier, a trip-device on said form-carrying member in the path of the mo able part of said gripping-mechanism, said trip-device comprising an inclined member onto and over the elevated end of which said movable part is adapted to travel when said carrier moves in one direction and underneath which said movable part is adapted to travel when the carrier moves in the opposite direction, and means to prevent said movable part of the gripping-mechanism dropping over the elevated end of said trip-device.
2l. In a printing-machine, the combination with a fiat form-carrying member, a reciprocating carrier, and an impressionmember on said carrier cooperating with said form-carrying member, of grippingmechanism 'including a movable part also on said carrier, a trip-device on said formcarrying member iu the path of the movable part of said gripping-mechanism, said tripdevice comprising an inclined member onto which and over the elevated end of which said movable part is adapted to travel when said carrier moves in one direction and underneath which said movable part is adapted to travel when the carrier moves in the opposite direction, and a slide-block having its upper face in the same plane as the elevated end of said trip-device and movable toward and from said trip-device to permit said movable part of Jthe gripping-mechanism to drop over .the ele 'ated end oi' said trip-device or to compel said movable part to pass onto said slide-block.
22. In a printing-machine, the combinallO tion of a form-carrying member, a movablecarrier, a paper-positioner movable on said form-carrying member and automatically adjustable to proper position when in the path of said carrier, an impression-member on said carrier, and paper feeding-mechanism adapted to remove the sheets from said paper-positioner and feed them to said form-carrying member.
23. In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, a carrier movable over said form-carrying member, an impression-member on said carrier adapted to cause a sheet of paper placed on said form-carrying member to be printed, and paper delivery-mechanism also on said carrier and spaced from said impression-member, said delivery-mechanism comprising a paper-ledge and a gripping-roller rotatable and movable toward and from said paperledge.
2l. In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, an impression-member, and paper delivery-mechanism spaced from said impression-member, said deliverymechanism comprising a paperledge. a rock-bar, arms secured to said rockbar, a gripping-roller journaled in said arms,` a lever secured to the spindle of said roller. and means for causing said lever to move in an arc of a circle.
In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, an impressiori-member, and paper delivery-mechanism spaced from said impression-member, said delivery -mechanism comprising a paper-ledge, a 'rock-bar journaled in said carrier. a pair of arms secured to said rockbar. a gripping-roller jonrnaled in said arms and movable toward and from said paperledge. a lever secured to the spindle of said roller, a slide-bar, a stop on said form-cari* ing member against which said slide-bar strikes, and a rod connecting said slide-bar with said lever.
26. In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member, an impression-member, and paper delivery-mechanism also on said carrier, said delivery-mechanism comprising a paper-ledge, a gripping-roller movable toward and from said paper-ledge, a spring acting to rotate said roller in one direction and held under tension when said roller is in contact with said ledge, said spring acting to rotate said roller in one direction when the latter is moved from said paper-ledge, and means to rotate said roller in the opposite direction so as to place said spring under tension, the Whole acting to gri i a printed sheet and deliver the same.
L17. In a printing-machine, the combination of a form-carrying member7 an impressionmember, paper delivery mechanism comprising two gripping-members normall7 in Contact, one of said members having rolling contact with the other, a pivoted trip-arm, connection between said trip-arm and one of said gripping-members. and a trip-device on said form-carrying member having an inclined tongue above and under which a portion of said trip-arm rides.
28. In a printing-machine. the combination of a form-carrying member, an impression-member adapted to cause a sheet of paper placed on said form-carrying member to be printed, a transversely-disposed fixed paper-support positioned over said formcarrying member to hold one end of the paper out of contact with parts beneath it, and paper delivery-mechanism having gripping-members passing above and beneath said end of the paper to grip the same and remove it from said form-carrying member.
29. In a printing machine, a paper-carrying device comprising two cooperating members, one at least being cylindrical, and means for actuating the cylindrical member to cause it to release the paper from said device by rolling in Contact therewith, said cylindrical member being otherwise held against rotation.
