Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,566, dated J une 6, 1871.
We, DUNCAN H. CAMPBELL, of Sunderland, Scotland, and EnAs'rUs WooDwARD, of Charlestown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have jointly invented a new and useful Improvement on Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specication Nature and Objects of the Invention.
The nature of our invention relates to an improvement on boots and shoes where the soles are attached together and to the boot or shoe by means of a wire peg formed from a combination of wires.
On the drawing, Figure 1 is a bottom View of the boot or shoe, and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur in the drawing.
The wire peg we employ for the purpose of attaching soles to boots and shoe-uppers consists of one central wire or a column of wires, surrounded by one or more wires of any-desirable pitch, and united together by means of a solder or alloy, as fully described in our patent dated December 27, 1870.
The sole a is shown on the drawing as being attached to the boot or shoe c, by means of our wire pegs b b b, in the same manner as ordinary pegs are used for the same purpose.
The advantages gained by using our improved wire peg for boots or shoes is that we obtain great elasticity and durability of the boot or shoe, as the wire peg we use is of such a soft and elastic nature that it allows of considerable bending and twisting without losing its hold onto the leather through which it is driven. We are also able to usea thinner and cheaper inner sole in our improved boot or shoe when pegged with our improved pegs, as the pegs are very easily clinched on the inner side of the boot or shoe owing to the softness of the wire pegs, and the inner sole will therefore not Vloe torn or pierced by the inner ends of the pegs, asin ordinary boots or shoes where common pegs or wires are used. The outer i ends of our wire pegs are also very easily clinched when driven in through the soles of boots and shoes, and the shoes and boots are thus strengthened very materially.
Having thus fully described the nature kand construction of our improved boot and shoe, we wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- As a new article of manufacture, a boot or shoe when the soles are attached together and to the boot or shoe upper by means of pegs formed from one central wire, or a column of wires surrounded by one or more wires of any desirable pitch, and united together by means of an alloy or solder.
