. C.S .DUNBRAGK. INSOLE FOR MANUFACTURING SHUES.
No. 108,985. I Patented Nov. 8, 1870.
ease first amnesia CHARLES s. DUNBRAoK. or swanrseorr, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 108,985, dated November 8, 1870; antedatecl'November 7, 1870."
-\O'Q-- IMPROVEMENT IN INSOLES'EOR MANUFACTURING SHOES.
th Schedule referred to in these-Letter: Patent and making part or the To all persons to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that I, GHAnL'ns S. DUNBRAOK, .of Swampscott, of the county of Essex and State of Mas sachusetts, have-invented a new and useful invention having reference'to,o1"to be employed in or for, the Making of Shoes; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which- Figures 1 and 2 are views of opposite sides; and
-higure3, a longitudinal section of the false inner sole and its carrier, as invented by me, and to be employed in the lasting of thenpper of'a shoe, and the application of all-outer sole to such upper preparatory to the sewing of such sole and upper or vamp together, by sewing going through the two and around the margin or edge 'ot'thc false inner sole or upper-supporter. The false inner soles heretofore used generally have been made of metal, and have had the centering-pins and spurs projected from them, suchirequiring a separate set of suchpins and spurs for each of such false inner soles.
In carrying out my present improvement, I combine the holding-spurs and the centering-pins, or either, 'with a carrier'consisting of a long strip of metal or other suitable material, separate 'from the false inner sole or upper-supporter, and I provide such strip with means, in whole or in part, of radially connecting it .with and disconnecting it from a false inner sole. Such enables a series of false inner soles of difierent sizesto be used with one carrier, and also admits of such false inner soles being made of leather or other suitable material other than metal, thereby avoiding the .danger of breakage of a needle while the upper is' be:-
ing sewed to the outer sole, which is liable to result by the needle, while inoperation, striking or being driven against the false inner sole when nitide of metal.
Each of the false inner soles of the series! usually construct as shown in side view in Figure 4-that is, with a-series of holes, a a a a, made. through it, each hole having anotcb, a, leading from it in man'neras rep resented.
These holes and notches I arrange in the medial line of the false inner sole, and they are to co-operate with a'series of buttons or headed projections, b b l) b,
extended from the carrier,-as shown in figs. 1 and 3', and more particularly in Figure 5, -.which is an edge view of such carrier.
In thedrawing the carrier is shown at A,- and the separate false inner sole at B.
of the buttons to enter the notches n, diverging from The outer sole centering-points or pins are shown at c c c, and the spurs at d d d, as extended from the outer surfitee of the carrier.
Holes,-e e', are also made through the carrier and the false inner sole, such holes being to receive pins for pinning theearrier and the false inner soleto a last, or centering the falseinner sole relatively thereto.
In lasting an upper or vamp by means of the carrier and false inner sole or vamp-supporter, as .described, I usually lae'c the lasting-thread about .the spurs in a manner to enable such thread not only 'tobe readily separated therefrom during theprocess of extracting the carrier and false inner sole from the vamp and sole after. the sewingof-thetwo may have been effected, but also to admit of such thread being drawn out ofthe vamp. To accomplish this-I do not carry the thread entirely across the false inner sole,
but only partially so, and hitch or loop the thread on the spurs from time to time,.as thethrcad mayprogress about the false inner sole, Y
In fixing a false inner sole to the carrier, we have only to insert the buttons of the latter in the hut-tonholes of the false inner sole, and afterward move the said false inner sole endwise, so as to cause the shanks the button-receiving holes.
I claim-- 1. Thecombination of the separate carrier A with the false inner sole B, the said carrier and false inner sole beingprovided with means of connecting and dis connecting them, as set forth.
2. The false inner-solecarrier, as provided with the centering-points c, the spurs d, and the buttons b, forconnecting such carrier to a false inner sole, as explained.
3. The carrier and the false inner-sole, as provided not only with the eeutering pins and the spurs, and
the buttons for connecting the carrier and false inner sole, but ashaving the 'eenteringrholes 0 formed through the said carrier-and the false inner sole, snch being for the purposes as explained.
4.- The false inner sole, as. made or provided with the holes a and notches n, or their equivaleuts,'-for connectingion aiding in connecting such sole with a carrier, substantially as explained.
CHARLES s. DUNBRAOK.
