Be it known that I, CLAUDE ,C. PRALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, county of Mercer, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Non-Refillable Bot tles, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to improvements .in socalled non-refillable bottles and particularly to bottles of this class in which the neck is made in a separate piece from the bottle body and secured thereto by suitable means.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a bottle neck of this kind. which may be economically manufactured andin which the necessary bafiie mechanism, valve mechanism and valve closing mechanism may be economically and quickly introduced and positioned. 7
As a full understanding of the invention can best be had from a description of a bot tle neck embodying the same such a description will now be given reference being Shad to theaccompanying drawing in which- Figure l is a vertical elevation of a bottle equipped with a neck embodying the present invention, and Figs. 2, 8 and 4 are transverse sections of the bottle neck on the lines 2, 8, at respectively ofFig. 1.
Referring to said drawings 1 represents the bottle body, 2- the neck thereof and 3 a stopper for the latter, which of course may be of any suitable material. The bottle neck 2 is separable from the bottle body being secured thereto by a metal collar 4 spun around the base of the neck and the upper end of the body and interlocked therewith by depression into annular recesses or grooves 5 suitably formed therein, a gasket 6 of suitable material being interposed between the abutting edges of the bottle neck and body to form a tight joint. Before the bottle neck is'thus secured to the bottle body the valve and baflie mechanisms are of course introduced into the neck. This method of making non-refillable bottles is one which has recently been adopted in the commercial production of such bottles because of economy in manufacture and because of the ease and facility with which the valve and bafiie mechanisms may be introduced into the bottle neck and then tested before being secured Specification of Letters Patent.

to the bottle body. In the commercial manufacture of the necks, however, it has been found necessary, lIlOlClQI' to provide for the introduction and accurate positioning of the valve and battle mechanisms, to make the bottleneck in two transverse parts or sections, then introduce the baffle mechanism, and then secure the two parts or sections to gether, valve mechanism being finally intro duced from the lower end of the neck. I have discovered, however, that this may be avoided and a great saving of time and labor effected. This I do by making the neck of porcelain or other suitable moldable material and, in forming it, providing it with a valve chamber 7 and above the latter with .an integral contracted portion 8 having a mechanism preventing the introduction into the valve chamber 7 of wire or any other valve tampering instrument and it also acts as a stop-andpositioning device for the baffie plug 10 which Is introduced into the bottle neck from the lower end thereof and dropped or shoved by hand into proper position therein, The battle plug 10 is molded from porcelain or other suitable material andis provided on its periphery with longitudinal ribs 11 engaging the walls of the valve chamber 7. These ribs 11 extend be yond the upper end of the plug as at 12, so as to engage the contracted portion 8 of the bottle neck and thus properly position the plug in valve chamber 7. The spaces be tween the ribs 11 at the sides of the plug provide longitudinal openings for the passage of liquid between the plug and the walls of the valve chamber while the spaces between the extensions 12 of the ribs provide lateral openings for the passage thence of the liquid. These several openings provide tortuous passages into which a wire or other valve-tampering instrument cannot be introduced.
To further guard against the introduction of a valve tampering instrument the upper end of plug 10 is provided with a recess 13 in line with, but of larger diameter than, the depending part 9 of the contracted portion 8 of the bottle neck, and as such depending part 9 is in about the same hori- V zontal plane as the upper edge of the plug it is obvious that the difliculties in the way of introducing a wire or the like into the openings between the plug 11 and the wallsof the valve chamber are veryconsiderably increased. The lower end of the plug 11 is also recessed for the reception of a valve closing weight let and below the plug the valve chamber is of suitable size and shape for the reception of a valve 15 and valve rest 16 which with the weight l l, are of course introduced into the bottle neck after the plug 10 has been introduced'and before the neck is secured by means of the collar at to the bottle body. The plug 10 is secured in place in the bottle neck by first dipping it into a bath of porcelain or other suitable material, then dropping or shoving it into position in the bottle neck, and then suitably heating the neck and plug to anneal the latter to theiormer. This, of course, is all done before the introduction of the weight 14, valve 15 and valve rest 16.

A bottleneck arranged to beconnected to a bottlebody and comprising an integral outer member having a' stopper receiving chamber at the upper end, an enlarged chamber extending to the lower end of the neck, a seat receiving rabbet in its lower edge, and an integral inwardly and down wardly flanged deflector intermediate the stopper chamber and the enlarged chamber and forming a constricted passage between said chamber, in combination witha valve seat arranged to fit in the seat receiving rabbet, a valve loosely mounted upon the valve seat, a non-integral baflie device fitting the enlarged chamber below the deflector and Copies of this patent may be obtained for having recesses on its upper and lower surarranged to be cemented therein, said 1;:
