To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. RANnLns, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Poplar Bluff, in the county of Butler and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generallyito pumps, and it has particular reference to drainage pumps.
The invention consists generally in an improved screen and agitator device adapted to coiiperate with the intake of the drainage pump to prevent the intaki'ng of undesired objects and which only permits the passage of the particles of graveland sand of the desired dimensions.
An object of the invention is to provide a screen and agitator device, with means for mounting and holding the same in proper position with respect to the intake of the pump, and means for actuating the screen and agitator device toremove from the field of suction such accumulations as may bedrawn into engagement with said device, so that said accumulations will be thrown or moved permanently outside of the field of suction, thus leaving the intake open to re ceive the clean sandand gravel.
Another object is to provide a revoluble screen and agitator with means for supportlowing description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which I have illustrated an embodiment of the invention which I have found particularly adapted to the foregoing purposes and in which:-

The usual rubber hose 1 is connected with the metallic intake pipe .2, it being understood that thehose 1 receives the materials which are drawn into the intake and serves as a passage for delivering the materials to any point of discharge. The intake 2, as usual, is adapted to be. placed upon or adjacent to the materials, such as, sand or gravel, which are to be pumped.
The screen and agitator device includes a A shaft 3 which is journaled in bearings Ladjustably secured to the intake. In the embodiment shown, the bearings'd constitute parts of detachable clamps 5 which are removably secured upon the intake pipe and are held in position by being clamped thereon. The shaft 3 supports the screen and agitator device on its lower end and in the,
be caught and prevented from entering the intake by the arms 6 and the rings 8.
It may be desirable, on different occasions, to adjust and support the screen and agitator device in different positions with-respect to the open end of the intake pipe.
' This may be readily effected by means which I have illustrated in Fig. 1, said means including two adjustable collars 9 mounted upon the shaft 3 and provided with clamping devices 10 adapted to engage with said shaft to hold said collars rigidly thereon. Thus, by adjusting one of said collars above one of the bearings 4: and the other of said collars below one of said bearings 4, the shaft 3 will be prevented from longitudinal or axial movement and it may be positioned so as to hold the agitator and'screen device at any desired distance from the open end of the intake. By revolving the shaft 3 and thereby the screen and agitator device all accumulations so caught may be conveniently removed from the field of suction,
leaving the intake open to receive the clear sand and gravel, without removing the intake from the sand or gravel bed.
In the embodiment shown the arms or spokes 6 are of such length that they will extend into and loosen or agitate the bed-of sand or gravel below the intake pipe, thus combining in a single device and operation the double function of screening and removing the undesired accumulations from adjacent to the intake, and also stirring, or agitating or loosening the sand or gravel in the bed thereof. The screen device is also of such size as to prevent the admission of large gravel which will also be carried laterally out of the field of suction by the arms 6.
As a convenient means for manipulating the screen and agitator, I provide a shaft 11 which is connected to the shaft 3 by the universal joint connection 12, the upper end of the shaft 11 being provided with a handwheel 13 for manipulative purposes. Thus, by revolving the shaft 3 through the manipulation of the wheel 13, the screen and agitator device may be operated to perform its variousfunctions. The provision of the revoluble device adjacent \to the end of the intake dispenses with the need of bars to prevent the taking in of too large bodies of gravel, etc.
In addition to the uses thereof above mentioned, it is apparent that the radial arms or spokes 6 may also be utilized as tractors to move the open end of the intake from one position to another upon the bed of gravel or sand. It will be apparent that there may be various modifications in the construction and arrangement of the screen and agitator, and that it may be applied to various other uses than those particularly mentioned-.-
- I have attempted to describe only one embodiment of the invention and a few of the uses which it is adapted to serve. I do not restrict myself to specific features of construction or'arrangement, nor limit myself to any particular uses, but

A pump comprising an intake pipe, clamps detachably supported by said pipe, hearings in said clamps above said pipe, a shaft revolubly journaled in said bearings, a series of arms supported by the end of said shaft adjacent to the end of said pipe, adjustable means cooperating with said bearings and said shaft whereby said arms may be supported at any desired distance from the end of said pipe, and manual means for revolving said shaft. 1 I

A pump comprising an intake pipe, clamps detachably supported by said pipe, hearings in said clamps above said pipe, a series of radial arms attached to said shaft adjacent to the open end of said pipe, a series of rings of different diameters concentrio with said shaft and supported by said arms, adjustable devices cooperating with said bearings and said shaft whereby said arms and said rings may be retained at any desired distance from the open end of said pipe, and manual means for revolvingsaid shaft.
3. A pump comprising an intake pipe, clamps detachably supported by said pipe, bearings in said clamps above said pipe, a
series of arms attached to said shaft adja-- cent to the open end-of said pipe, a series of rings of difi'erent diameters attached to said arms, adjustable devices cooperating with said bearings to hold said shaft in position to hold said arms and said rings at any desired distance from the end of said pipe, an additional shaft, a universal pivot joint connamed shaft, and manual means for revolving said additional shaft and thereby said first-named shaft.
4. A pump comprising an intake pipe, bearings wholly supported by said intake pipe, a shaft journaled' in said bearings, arms attached to said shaft adjacent to the open end of said pipe, rings of different diameters attached to said arms, devices comeeting said additionalshaft with said firstoperating with said hearings to hold said I shaft in position to retain said arms and rings at any desired distance from the open end of said pipe, an additional shaft pivoted to said first-named shaft, and means for revolving said'additional shaft. v
