`Application.filed September 22,1914. Seria1-No.863,D52; o
T all whom it may cof/wcm.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Qnnrrson, a citizen of theUnited States, residingpfat Tacoma, in the county of Pierce, State ofl/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful improvements inTools for Removing Driving- Box Cellars;v and AI do hei'eby declare the following tov be a fulhclear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which the cellar without in'any wayy injuring .or
' breaking any of theparts oi' the driving box.
Another object is to provide a ldevice of this character which is not onlyl simple in its construction-fy and operation, but, which can be very `quickly and easily applied to a driving box, operated 'thereon' and removed therefrom. y
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent'irom the following description when' taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure lis anelevation of the locomotive driving box` looking toward the end of the axle, with my invention in applied position. Fig. 2isa side eleva-v tion of the saine. Fig.` 3 is a horizontal sectional viewon the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig.
Y l is an enlarged horizontal sectional view on the line 1-4 of' Fig. 1. Figi)V is a horizontal section on the line 5-5 'of Fig. 1.V Fig. 6 is a plan view of one of the clamps.
lt is well-known that the lubricating cellar of the ,locomotivekv driving box becomes tightly gripped by the surrounding collar, and the ordinary method of removing this cellar is to `drive the cellar from its place with a sledge hammer. rlhis is a process which takes considerable time, and at the same time badly damages the cellar or collar making it necessary to replace the collar with a new one. i
lt is theprincipal-object of the present Vinvention to provide a device which willl spread the collarr open sor as to permit the byl means oit which thedriving cellar to `cguickly andeasily slide out of the collar, without in any way damaging or breaking thend'riving box. f
Referring' particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents the driving box and 11 'the lubricating cellar which is held between the ends of the box. The opposite vertical sideso'f the box are formed with the longitudinal parallel rods 12 which slidably engageon the sides of the pedestals. of the locomotive frame, as will be understood, it not being thought necessary to show the pedestals.

The box; spreading device vincludes a pair A of vertical side members i 13 `and 11i the lower portionsoi" which;r are bent inwardly at an kobtuse 'angle as clearly. shown, these lower ends being arranged to engage the sides of the boxbetween theribs 12. f Ex-L tending inwardlyr from each `of the side membersl 13 and' 14C "and movable, vertically between the saidribs is a lu'g'l, andbelow thelug an opening u16 is' formed through the side members., Disposed;throughtheopening 16z is a threaded'bolt 17 which carries on its inner end a transversely extending head `518' thel outerends of which incline v-iii-"afdirection toward the point of attachment of the bolts 17. Engaged on these inclined ends are the wedge blocks 19 the outer faces f of which are serrated as indicated 'at 20. Links 21 are secured to the head 1S at one end and have their other ends provided with elongated slots 22 through which are passed the bolts 23 also passed through the blocks 19. The blocks are thus capable of slidingj movement on the inclined ends of the head but `are held from displacement by means of the links. Carried by the reariiace of the head 18.y are the rearwardly extending pins 2t and disposed on the bolt 1'? andr provided with openings receiving the pin 241="is a plate 25, this plate being slidably engaged on the bolt and bearing with its opposite ends against-.the rear faces of the blocks 19. rflireaded onto the bolt 17 in rear ofthe plate 25 is a nut 26 which,.when screwed toward the head 18, moves the plate 25 against the blocks 19 and causes them to slide on the inclined ends of the head thus moving them away from' each other.
Pivotally mounted in 'the upper end of V the side member 13 is a bar 27 the other end i 25 will bermoved against the blocks 19 andv ,will be forced upwardly so bers 13 and 14 are disposed on opposite f `sides of the boX 1() so that the heads 18V and lugs 15k are disposed between the ribs 12.Y The heads 18 extend transversely between the ribs, and upon forcing the nuts 26 ina direction toward the box the plate force the serrated faces offsaid blocks into firm biting engagement with the mutual ad- ]acent faces of the ribs'12.v The side members 13 and 14 are thus held nsitiononv thev boX.` Thebars-27 'and 28 are then swung downwardly until the point 32 engagesthe inner face ofthe upper end of the memberl/I, it ofcourse being understood that the bars 27 and 28 are disposed in alinement so "that they Yform in effect a'single bar.. The-head 31y is then turned so that the screwBO exerts pressure to .force the upper ends ofthe side members 13 and 14 apart. The'blocksv19 firmly gripping Vthe-'sides of the boX exertv outward pull so aste separate the'sidesV of the open end ofthe Vbox andV thus*l release the CellartherefrOm. *Vlehenf the box is thusfreleased from the cellar, thefbox together with the side members 13 will slide downwardly iat the sidesl ofthe cellar, when the bars'27 and 28 engage-with the cellar, thepivotalconnection between fthe said bars that the boxV will be permitted to spring #back into its normal Copies? of this patent may be obtained for lve cents` each, byad'dressing the "V Commissioner of'Patents, Y Washington, 11C. v v v -Y ysaid side members said driving box, comprising side A. members, spreading clamps carried by said side members and adapted for engageinentrwith the flanges of a boX, anda'folding adjustable or breaking either the f e. f 45 1.
