To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Farmsen B. Mosnnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new` and useful Filing Appliance, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings andA to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to vfiling appliances comprising leaves or frames that are adapted to be mounted in cases and to `be used for the purpose of filing papers for future reference, more particularly duplicate bill slips used in credit accounting systems, the leaves or frames being connected together so that While normally arranged in upright position they may be moved forward pivotally to prone position, the invention having reference more particularly to the devices for connecting the leaves or frames together and to means for supporting and control:- ling them, more particularly so that they may be forced apart at their connected ends, in order to accommodate unusually large numbers of sheets of paper which may require filing on the leaves or frames.

The object of the invention primarily is to provide improved supporting means and also hinging devices for filing leaves of the above-mentioned character' that will permit the leaves to stand apart When `crowded with papers or bill slips, and at the same time permit the leaves to normally be in echelon or stepped relation one to another inthe supporting case, a specific object being` to provide improved constructi'onin filing appliances of the above-mentioned character that may be cheaply produced and be Ltion consists further in the parts, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter particularly described and. claimed.

The case comprising a part of the cabinet in Which the' filing leaves are mounted for use may suitably comprise a bottom l, a relatively high baclr 2 and sides 3 and l. on the rearward portionof the bottom,relatively los sides 3 and 4.- extending from the higher sides forwardtoa front 5 on the forward end ofthe bottom. A top rail 6 eX- tends across between the lower portions of the higher sides at a-suitable distance above the bottom l, and a lid 7 is connected thereto by means of'hinges 8. A pair of hook-like leafsupports 9 and 9 are mounted on the inner or forward side of the back 2 for supporting the rearmost one 4of the leaves in normal position, and a suitable fastening button devies l0 is mounted movably on a base-block 11 which is preferably provided and secured to the upper portion of the back 2 for holding the upper end of the real-most leaf in normal position.

When it is desired to connect a plurality'of leaves of pre-determined thickness, so that there shall be some space between the leaves to accommodate a 'relatively larger number of sheets of paper the hinges areiconstructed substantially as shown in Figs. 12 and 14and connected to the leaves as illustrated :in Fig. 12, each hinge comprising a plate 43 which is secured to the under side ofthe leaf and supports a hingepin 44 slightly beyond the plane of the front of the leaf, a link 45 being connected to the hinge-pin. The rear sides of the leaves have hinge-plates 46 secured thereto which support hinge-pins 47 slightly rearward of the plane of the leaf and connected to the links. y

Thenumerals 49, 49', indicate packs of bill-slips secured to the leaves and being of unusually large quantities force the leaves apart toj accommodate them.

In practical use papers or bill slips requiring to be `preseiwed nsystematic order are placed on the leaves or frames and secured thereto bythe spring clamps or such devicesas may be provided. The set of itea'ves being mounted :in .the case substantially as illustrated, when it is desired to gain access to any onev of the leaves thedesired leaf or one next in front of it with all Ythe leaves forward thereof may be moved forward to prone position by hand, the indexing on the leaves being visible to the operator. lVhen pulling the leaves forward the front leaf forces the cross-head 21 rearward and downward as the leaf or leaves move forward pivotally thereon. The rearmost one of the leaves that are being moved forward moves relatively to the adjacent normally positioned leaf both pivotally and upward, since the leaves that are being moved forward are forced upright by meansof the springs 20, 20', acting through the crosshead and connections. 1t will be seen, therefore that when the leaves are inprone position they are formed in a rectangular pack excepting when some or all of them are forced apart by unusual quantities of papers filed thereon. When the leaves are lifted from prone position the action of the

29, 29,fforces the cross-head forward so as to assist in returning the leaves to normal position. and then normally holds them uprightly.

Various features ofthe hinged leaf construction, herein described but not claimed, form the subject-matter of a divisional application for Letters Patent, filed March 23, 1912, Serial Number 685,898.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is-

1. A filing applianceincluding a case, a plurality of bill-holding leaves normally arranged face to face in upright position and linked together attheir lower ends, one end leaf being connected to the case and the opposite end leaf of the plurality being yieldingly supported in the case, and means imparting a. movement of separation tothe leaves while in `upright position.

2. A filing appliance including a case, a plurality of bill-holding leaves having linkconnections between them, the rear-most leaf being secured to the case, the foremost leaf having pivots, a cross-head connected with the pivots, movable means for guiding the" crosshead in an inclined plane, and means for normally forcing the crosshead and movable guiding means upwardly. Y

8. A filing appliance including a plurality of bill-holding leaves, connections between theV leaves permitting krelative pivotal and also lateral movements thereof, means for supporting the rearmost one of the leaves, the leaves being movable from upright to prone position and vice versa, and adjustable means connected with the foremost one of the leaves and permitting the relative lateral movements of the leaves for drawing the lower vportions of adjacent leaves apart when in upright position.

A filing app iance including a plurality of leaves normally arranged in upright position and linked together at their lower ends, means for supporting an end one of the plurality of leaves in upright position, a movable support for the `opposite end one of the plurality of leaves, a yielding guidefor said support, and means Vfor imparting a movement of separation to the lower ends of the leaves while in upright position.

5. In a filing appliance, the combination with a case, a guide mounted in the case and movable upward or downward, and means for normally forcing the guide upward yieldingly, of a crosshead mounted movably on the guide, pivot-bearings mounted on the crosshead, and a plurality of bill-holding leaves having link-connections between them, one of thefleaves being connected to the case and another one of them being connected to the pivot-bearings.

6. In a filing appliance, the combination of va case, a plurality of bill-holding leaves arranged face to face in the case, the rearmost leaf being connected to the case, hinges connecting the leaves together comprising each a link pivotally connected to the lower side o-f one leaf and to the rearward side of the neXt adjacent forward leaf at a distance from the normally lower end thereof, the foremost leaf having pivots, a crosshead connected-with the pivots that are on the foremost leaf, and means for yieldingly supporting the crosshead movably.

7. In a filing appliance, the combination with a case, of a guide mounted in the case and movable upwardly or s downwardly, means for normally forcing the guide upwardly, a support movably mounted on the guide, and a plurality of'bill holding leaves having connections between them, one of the leaves being connected to the case and another one of them being connected to said support. 8. 1n a filingy appliance, the combination with a case, of a Vguide mounted in the case and movable upwardly or downwardly, meansfor normally forcing the guide upwardly, a support movably mounted on the guide, a plurality of bill holding leaves having connections between them, one of the leaves being connected to the case and another one of them being connected to said support, and means arranged to be put under tension by the movement of said support on the guide in one direction.

9. In a filing appliance, the combination with a case, a guide mounted in the case and movable upward or downward, and means for yieldingly forcing the guide upward, of

a crosshead movably mounted on the guide, and a plurality of bill-holding leaves having shifting pivotal connections between them, one'of the leaves being supported by the case and another one of them being pivotally' connected. with the crosshead. Y
