.To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELLIS T. SiLvIUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Credit-Accounting Register, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

The present invention relates to apparatus, the general characteristics of which are well known, being used by merchants for filing various kinds of papers for future reference, and more particularly for systematically keeping accurate credit accounts, the invention having reference more particularly to devices for connecting the bill holding leaves or frames together that constitute pivotally supported parts of filing cabinets, the leaves or frames being adapted to stand uprightly in normal position in echelon or to lie in prone position in the formof a rectangular pack.

The object of the present invention is to provide improved positive controlling means for the adjustable hinging connections with which the leaves or frames are provided, a further object being to provide adjustable hinge controlling mechanism that will be simple and adapted to be cheaply constructed of the minimum numbers of parts.

A still further object is to provide adjustable hinge controlling mechanism that will be adapted to be varied in proportion, so that the degree of stepping of the leaves in echelon may be varied in different cabinets, as may be desired.

The invention comprises the combination, with bill holding leaves or frames provided with adjustable hinging connections, of novel controlling mechanism whereby the leaves or frames of the register or cabinet are caused to operate during pivotal movement of the leaves or frames, so that the latter shall be in echelon when in normal upright position or form a rectangular pack when in prone position; the invention consisting also in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

The case of the register or filing cabinet may be variously constructed, as may be preferred, and suitably comprises a desklike part 1 having a transverse rail 2 constituting a leaf or frame support in the upper rearward portion thereof from which extends a top or lid 3 on which the bill holding leaves or frames are supported when in prone position, a' floor 4: extending from the rail rearward to a back 5, which extends upward to a suitable height, and has sides 6 and 7 secured thereto and eX- tending forwardly to or beyond the position of the rail 2.

A pair of pivot bearings 8 and 8 are secured upon the rail 2 for supporting a complete set of the bill holding leaves or frames comprising any suitable or desired number as 9, 10, 10, 10", all generally similar 1n construction and provided with suitable clamps 11 or such devices as may be preferred for holding papers on the leaves or frames'in systematic order; Part of the :hinging connections of the leaves having beendescribed in-mypending applications for'Letters Patent, Serial No. 525,100 and c No. 623,424, are herein only briefly referred to. The foremost leaf 9 is provided with a 'gitudinally with respect'to the leaf and are provided with hinging ears'17 and 17 respecpair-of pivots 12 and 12"which are'movably connected with the pivot bearings 8 and 8. The lower rearward portion of each one of the leaves, excepting the rearmost leaf 10, is provided with hinging ears 13 and 13 having hinge pins 14 and 14 respectively.

The rear segments, as will be seen, are pivotally connected both to the hinging ears 13 and 13 and also to the hinging bars 15 and 15, there being relatively few wearing parts in which lost motion may occur. The fronts of the upper portions of the leaves have suitable indexing characters thereon as 28, 28, as is customary.

The sides 6 and 7 are provided on the inner sides thereof with a pair of inclined channel guide ways 29 and 29in which is mounted an abutment preferably comprising two main parts 30 and 30, one provided with rollers 31 and 31 and the other with rollers 32 and32, the main parts having upwardly extending arms 33 and 33 thereon which prevent the leaves from tilting rearward in vertical position, the abutment being operatively connected with the leaves. The main parts of the abutment are provided with pivots 34 and 34 to which coupling bars 35 and 35 are connected, each bar having a hook 36 on its end that engages a wrist pin 14" preferably formed as an extension on the rearmost hinge pins 14 and 14 that connect the two rearmost leaves together, the coupling bars resting on stops 37 and 37 when not in use, the stops being fixed on the abutment. The two main parts of the abutment are connected together by means of a rod 38.

It will be understood that the controlling arms 22 and 22 may extend from the seg ments 20 and 20 respectively at various angles, the guides for the arms being arranged accordingly as may be required; and various other details of construction may be varied within the scope of the appended claims.

In practical use, the leaves being normal in echelon in upright position, all or any number of the leaves may be drawn forward to prone position in order to gain access to the papers filed on the leaves, and during the forward movement while the leaves are carried upon pivots 12 and 12, controlling arms 22 and 22 are guided by means of the guide ways in the plates secured to the sides of the case, each leaf excepting the foremost one being supported when in upright position directly by means of the gear segments and the rack bars, as will be readily understood, the gear segments being prevented from rotating on their pivotal supports by means of their controlling arms and the guide ways therefor, so that as will be seen the leaves on approaching prone position are drawn toward their pivotal supports so as to form a rectangular pack, and on approaching upright position are forced away from their pivotal supports so as to stand in echelon; The leaves when upright are inclined by the force of gravity to lean renrward against the abutment which holds them accurately in vertical position, as will be understood. When it is desired to remove the leaves from the case the abutment is disconnected therefrom and permitted to rest against the back of the case, the leaves being first drawn forward to form a rectangular pack and then lifted from the pivot bearings 8 and 8.

Having thus described the invention What is claimed as new, is

i. A credit accounting register including frame provided with a plurality of rackbars, a plurality of hinge-bars movably connected with the frame, and a plurality of gear segments pivoted to the hinge-bars and engaging the rack-bars.

A credit accounting register including a frame provided with a plurality of fixed bars having gear teeth, a plurality of hinging devices movably connected With the frame adjacent the fixed bars, and a plurality of segments pivoted to the hinging devices and having gear teeth thereon engaging the gear teeth of the fixed bars, each segment having a controlling arm thereon.

3. A credit accounting register including a case, a plurality of normally upright leaves, hinging devices connecting the leaves together and permitting relative vertical movement of the leaves, pivots supporting the foremost one and thereby the remaining ones of the leaves in the case, and a plurality of cooperating series of toothed gearing, each series connected with two adjacent leaves for normally supporting the rearward one on the forward one of the tWo leaves in echelon and preventing their relative vertical movement.

A credit accounting register including a plurality of leaves provided each with a plurality of toothed bars, a plurality of hinging devices movably connected with the leaves and pivotally connected with adja cent leaves, and a plurality of toothed segments pivotally connected with the hinging devices and meshing with the toothed bars, each segment having a controlling arm thereon.

A credit accounting register including a plurality of leaves, one leaf of each two adjacent leaves having a toothed rack-bar thereon, the other one of the two adjacent leaves having a toothed gear segment pivotally connected thereto and meshing with the next adjacent rack-bar, the segment be ing provided with a controlling arm, and adjustably movable means connecting the adjacent leaves together? 6. A credit accounting register including a case comprising sides, guideways on the sides, and a plurality of leaves of which the foremost is pivotally supported in the case, each leaf excepting the foremost one having a pair of toothed rack-bars fixed thereon and having also a pair of relatively movable hinge members, the hinge members being pivotally connected to the next adjacent forward leaves, each leaf excepting the.rearmost one having a pair of toothed segments pivotally connected thereto that mesh with the rack-bars of the next adjacent rearward leaves, the segments having controlling arms thereon that are guidedin the guideways.

7. In a filing appliance, the combination of a plurality of leaves or frames having each a supporting bar rigidly fixed thereon and provided with a segment movably connected with the leaf or frame to cotiperate with the bar for adjustment of the leaf or frame relative to the segment, the segments being pivotally connected with next adjacent leaves for support.

8. In a filing appliance, the combination of a plurality of leaves or frames provided each with a plurality of coiiperating toothed devices for normally supporting the leaf in upright position, one of the devices being rotatably connected with the leaf or frame to move longitudinally thereof and rotatably supported by an adjacent leaf or frame, and a plurality of independently guided controlling devices connected vvith and controlling the rotatably supported devices respeotively.

9. In a filing appliance, the combination with a plurality of normally upright leaves or frames, movable means pivotally connecting the leaves or frames together and permitting relatively vertical movement thereof, and means for pivotally supporting the foremost one of the leaves or frames adapted for bodily supporting the remaining leaves or frames in normal position, of a plurality of cooperating rack and segment devices carried by the leaves or frames, one of the devices being rotatably supported by its carrying leaf or frame relatively thereto and bodily supporting the cooperating device and its carrying leaf or frame when the latter is in normal position, the rotatably supported devices being provided respectively with. controlling devices.

10. In a filing appliance, the combination of a plurality of leaves, hinging devices connecting the leaves together and havin adjusting movement longitudinally of the leaves, pivots for supporting the foremost one of the leaves, and a plurality of co- .o-perating series of toothed gearing, each series being connected with two adjacent leaves for supporting the rearward one of the two leaves and controlling the adjustability of the hinging devices.

11.
