INTERNAL-COMBUSTION MOTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. 21, 1915.
Application led January 26, 191.5. Serial No. 4,559.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, VILHELM' FROEHLIGH, subject of the King of Prussia, residing at 1l Tristanstrasse, Wannsee, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in .Internal-Combustion Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to internal combustion motors and more especially to the class of motors having a number of cylinders arranged in a position parallel to each other around a central crank shaft. In motors of this kind the energy furnished by the pistons has been transmitted to the shaft, in a number of cases, by means of a so called reeling ring, this ring being forced by the pistons connected with it to execute a movement of reeling around its own center and thereby causing in its turn a ring-shaped or a spherical body fixed to the shaft to rotate in the same direction and to impart this movement also to the shaft itself. With devices ofdthis kind it has proved necessary to support the reeling ring in such a way as to prevent it from rotating in a direction opposite to the rotation of the shaft driven by it, without however hindering the mobility of the ring. This has been achieved by means of a bevel gear system, the reeling ring rolling on a fixed gear. A system of this kind, however, presents the drawback of creating considerable friction and a disturbed motion.
According to my invention the tangential reaction tendency of the reeling ring is taken up by guides being under strain in their horizontal direction and connected at one end with the ring by universal joints, their other ends being fixed to the engine bed.
The drawings affixed to this specification show the preferred form of a driving device according to my invention.
Figure l is a diagrammatic side View, Fig. 2 is an end view of the device.
a are the cylinders, a the pistons therein, Z) are the piston rods, c is the reeling ring, Z is the shaft, g are the guides connected, by means of universal joints f and it, with the ring c and the engine bed respectively. Whlle the ring is moving, the guides g execute movements on a spherical surface;
their final positions are shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines.
I claim 1. In a motor of the character described, the combination with a shaft, a plurality of cylinders arranged about and extending parallel to the shaft, a wabbling ring mounted on the shaft, and pistons in the cylinders vconnected with said ring, of means for maintaining the ring and shaft in proper relation and counteracting the tangential reaction of the ring comprising a link extending at an angle to the length of the shaft and having its ends respectively connected with the ring and frame of the motor.
2. In Va motor of the character described, the combination with a shaft, a plurality yof cylinders arranged about and extending parallel to the shaft, a wabbling ring mounted on the shaft, and pistons in the cylinders connected with said ring, of two links extending at an angle to the shaft and each connected at one end with the motor frame and at the other end with said ring, the connections between the links and ring being at diametrically opposite points, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a motor of the character described, the combination with a shaft, a plurality of cylinders arranged about and extending parallel to the shaft, a wabbling ring mounted on the shaft, and pistons in thel cylinders connected with said ring, of means for maintaining the ring and shaft in proper relation and counteracting the tangential reaction of the ring comprising a link extending at an angle to the length of the shaft and having its ends respectively connected with the ring and frame of the motor by ball and socket joints.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
