The device forming the subject matter 'of this application is a burial vault, the strucvide a burial case of the type above described having a false bottom oi' novel form, it being possible to seal the lalse bottom to the case in the manner described in connection with the case and the lid.
Another object of the invention is to provide a burial case or vault in which the intermediate portion of the case may be removed readily, it being possible to set the lid directly on the false bottom and thereby produce a shallow receptacle for special purposes, the sealing elements oi" the lid and 'the case upon the one hand, and the ease the false bottom upon the other hand being so constructed that whenthe lid rests 'directly upon the `false bottom, these elements may be sealed together effectively.
it is within the scope oi the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of, devices of that. type to which the present invention appertains. l
'W ith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed Without de- .f parting from-the spirit yof the invention.
' shows one form of the invention in top plan,
ln the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 vcross section showing a modified form of the invention.
.ln the form of the invention which is disclosed in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 there is provided a false bottom 1. having an upstanding peripheral Harige 2 equipped with` an internal shoulder 3. A. case 4 rests upon the shoulder 3 and includes a bottom 25 having perforations 5, the bottom 25 of the case proper being spaced from the false bottom 1. The outer wall of the case t is spaced apart from the inner wall of the flange 2 to define a slot 6 which is open at the top. ln the outer wall of the case 4 and in the inner wall of Athe flange 2 oppositely disposed grooves 7 medium 8 may be poured into the slot 6 and this sealing medium will expand in the alined grooves 7 to i'orm a locking and sealing rib 9. The grooves 7 extend entirely around the elements in which they are formed, and therefore the sealing rib 9 is Vcontinuous and unbroken around the entire periphery of the structure.
From the description as thus far proceedy ed with it will be understood that as the corpse decomposes, the liquid oozing from the corpse will pass through the perforations 5 in the bottom 25 and will lodge upon the false bottom 1.
The case is equipped adjacent its upper end with a Flange 10 having an internal shoulder l1 upon the shoulder l1 rests a flange 12 constituting a part oit a lid 14.-. The flange 10 and the Arlange l2 are spaced apart to deine a slot 15, and grooves 16 are formed in the `flanges, the grooves being oppositely disposed. The sealing medium is indicated at 17 and forms a rib 18 in the grooves i6 as before described. The shoulders 3 and 10 serve as closures, respec tively, for the lower ends of the slots 6 and 15 and since the case d rests on the shoulder 3, and since the flange 12 of the lid 14 rests upon the shoulder 11, the sealing medium willbe prevented from llowing laterl ally into. the interior ot the case.
From the foregoing it will be noted that it is necessary merely to set the case d onthe shoulder 3 of the'false' bottom and pour the sealing medium 8 into place, the flange 12 of the lid 14 being placed on thel shoulder 11 and the sealing medium 17 being poured into place, whereupon, owing to the presence of the sealing ribs 9 and 18., it will be irnpossible for the* products of decomposition to leak `0ut of the structure.
1n Figl thereis shown a case 19 having a flange 2O provided with a shoulder 21, the
pensed with entirely, the flange 12 of the lid 14. being permitted to rest directly .on the shoulder 3 of the flange 2 of the false bottom 1. Under such circumstances, the groove 16 in theflange 12 will be lined up With the groove 7 in the flange 2, and the sealing operation may be carried out as before described, the vertical distance from the groove 16 in the flange 12 to the shoulder 11 being equal to the vertical distance from the groove 7 in the flange 2 to the shoulder 3.
VIt has been stated hereinbefore that the structure preferably is fashioned from concrete and, Without specfc illustration, it will be understood that reinforcements may be provided Whenever and Wherever necessary,
Under such circumstances, v the case 4, referring to Fig. 3, may be 'disnatures this detail Vconferring no novelty and being Well Within the scope-of any skilled me chanic.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed isz- `A mortuary receptacle comprising a false bottom having an upstanding vflange pro vvided With an internal shoulder a case resting on the shoulder and spaced from the flange to define a slot, the case 4including a main bottom spaced from the fake bottom, the case having an upstanding flange provided With an internal shoulder; and a lid resting on the shoulder of the case and spaced from the flange of the case to define a slot, the flange of the false bottom and the case proper, and the flange of 'the case and the lid, having oppositely disposed grooves opening into the respective slots,l the sets of grooves being spaced equally from the respective shoulders, and the case being re- ,movable, whereby when the lid rests upon the shoulder of the flange of the false bottom, the groove of the lid Will be disposed opposite -to the groove in the angeof the kfalse bottom. v
1n testimonythat Weclaim the foregoing as our own, We have hereto affixed our sigin' the presence of two Witnesses. r THOMAS BERRY.
