FRANKLIN P. NALE AND EIHRAIH J. HUDIhT ALL, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
BACK FOB FIREPLAOES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1915.
To all 101i om it may concern Be it known that we, Fnannus P. Nana and lirunam J. Human, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Birmiugluuu. in the county of Jefferson and State of .-\labama,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backs for Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in tire barks and has for its object to provide a novel arrangement of dust fines disposed so as to catch and carry off the dust that is swept into the fireplace and prevent its escape into the room.
A further object of our invention is to so arrange the dust fines that they may serve to prevent the back becoming sufiiciently heated to be injured while at t is same time they do not interfere with the normal draft to the fire nor do they chill the back sufficiently to substantially affect its heat radiating capacity.
Our invention further comprises the details of construction and arrangements of parts which are hereinafter more particuarly described and claimed, reference be ng had to the accom anying drawings who form a part of t is specification, and 1n which 1- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fireplace having our improved fire back. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on the line :1:m of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a horizontal section taken on the line y-g; of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the fire back east as an integral body.
Similar reference numerals refer to simila r parts throughout the drawings.
According to the drawings, t e chimney l is of customary construction and the fireplace therein is formed with side walls 2 and a back 3, which back may be made of brick or built a as a part of the chimney, or may as an inte ral molded article of fire clay, as illustrate in Fig. 4. This fire back is provided with a front wall which curves toward the front of the grate at its upper end 4 and is provided with vertical side rooves I) which extend len thwise down its sides and into which the si e walls 2 of the fireplace interfit, as shown in Fig. 8, to prevent the back falling out. The fireplace is grovided with a grate 6 of any suitable design. slow this grate and on the level of the hearth 7 of the fireplace we provide a pair of horizontal fines 8 in the bottom of the back 3. These fines have their side walls slightly tapered upwardly and are spaced well apart so as to brin them near each side of the fireplace. These orizontal fines 8 merge into vertical fines 9 which have their outer side walls tapered and which are preferably larger in cross-sectional area than are the fiucs 8. Preferably these fines 9 are disposed in line with the fines 8 and are of substantially the same size throughout. They are arranged adjacent to the sides of the back 3 so as to leave the middle ortion of the back of normal thickness an free of fines. At their upper ends these vertical fines open into the chimney fine 10 so that a continuous draft is maintained through the fines 8 and 9 by the normal chimney draft. We arrange the fines 8 at the sides of the fireplace to avoid interference with or diversion of the draft for the fire in the grate for the chimney naturally draws the incoming air toward the center of the fireplace and air therefore drawn toward the sides at the bottom of the fireplace will have practically no effect on the main draft and yet will carry off the ashes and dust swept into the fireplace. By arranging our fines 8 and 9 adjacent to the sides of the fireplace we not only do not rob the fire of any substantial part of its draft but we avoid chilling the center or highly heated V art of the back enough to affect its efiiciencv in radiating heat into the room. The draft of air through the fines 9 will be sufiicient, however, to prevent the back becoming so overheated as to be injured thereby.
We prefer to make the whole back as an integral molded article of fire clay for which mason the fines 8 and 9 are tapered to permit the free withdrawal of the patterns therefrom. However the back can be formed in one or more parts or made of brick as may be desired without departing from our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A fireback for fireplaces formed along; its bottom with horizontal grooves and at its back with vertical grooves communicating;
neath the grate and'upwurd between the firebuck and the rear wall of the chimney fine,
and opening into the chimney fine at n point opposite the direct outlet of the fireplace for the products of combustion.
In testimony whereof we aflix our Signzb tures in presence of two witnesses.
