Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, MERRJLL ROBBINS, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Adams, in the countyof Jefferson and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bottles, and has for'its object to provide a novel, simple and eflective device for rendering bottles non-refillable after the original contents have oncebeen withdrawn. A further object is to provide a novel, durable and efiective stopper 'whi ch cannot be withdrawn fromthe bottle-neck. And a further object is to provide a. gravitative valve and means for preventing tampering with the said valve.
The various features and parts of the improvement will be understood from the detailed description which follows, and by reference to the accompanying drawlng which forms a part of the specification, in
which Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the neck portion of a bottle; showing the application of my improvement thereto. 1 Fig. 2 is a similar section, showing the bottle invertedfor drawing off the contents. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on linev 3.-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of the slotted thimble. Fig. 5 is a detailed View of the valve seat. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the strainer-guard. Fig. 7 is a view of the compressible locking ring. Fig. 8 is an end view of the neck of the bottle.
In the drawing, 2 represents the neck of a bottle 3, which is cylindrical and intermediate its ends is provided with an annular groove 41 having at its top edge an abrupt shoulder 5.
My improved stopper comprises a number of parts, which may be made of metal or other suitable material, all of which are preferably assembled before the stopper is inserted in the neck 2. 6 comprises a hollow cylindrical member having a diameter substantially the same as the inside diameter of the neck 2; the top 7 comprising an inturned flange, and 8 represents a circular opening for the discharge of the contents of the bottle, the said opening adapted to be closed and sealed by a cork 9. Directly beneath the flange 7 is disposed a perforated disk 10, having an upturned annular flange 11, for slightly spacing the said disk from the underside of the said flange, while the central portion of the disk is slightly crowned, so that the cork 9 may be driven in tightly against the disk without danger a thimble or cage, which is inserted in the cylinder 6 beneath the disk 10, the upper end 12 of the said thimble being cylindrical and bearing against the underside of said disk for holding the latter in place.
Below the cylindrical portion, the thimble 12 is slotted longitudinally preferably at regular intervals, as at 13, the lower ends of the slots being closed by a similar cylindrical portion 12", and the lower ends of the slots being positioned but a short distance from the bottom of the stopper memher 6. The stopper 6 at its lower end, is reduced in diameter, as at 15, the upper margin of the said reduction comprising an annular shoulder 16.
The extreme lower end of the member 6 is externally threaded and screws into a threaded upturned flange 17 of the seatring or member 18, until the lower end of the said member bottoms or engages a horizontal ledge or face 19 of the ring 18. The member 18 has a central opening 20, having a curved upwardly facing annular surface 21, which comprises the seat for a gravitative spherical valve 22. The thimble or cage 12 acts as a guide for the ball 22, and owing to the slots 13 the liquid contents of the bottle flows freely past the ball whenever the latter is unseated by the inversion of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 2.
By providing the cage or thimble 12, as herein shown and described, the construction of the stopper is greatly simplified and cheapened. My improved stopper is held in the neck 2 and is rendered unremovable by means of a cork or other compressible key-ring 24, which is slipped over the reduced portion 15 before the parts are assembled, and is afterward held in place against the shoulder 16 by flange 17 of the seat ring. The top edge of the locking ring 2 1 is preferably broad enough to fillthe groove 4, as shown in Figs. land 2. After the parts are all assembled the lower end of thestopper is inserted in the mouth of the neck 2, and sufficient pressure is applied to the opposite end to force the stopper downwardly into the neck. The ring 2st is compressed during this operation until it reaches the groove 4, when the said ring expands and fills the said groove and effectually locks and holds the stopper inplace' (see Figs. 1 and 2). In order to prevent the stopper from being inserted too far into the neck 2, I provide an annular rib 25, which is integral with the neck. By disposing the cork or other compressible ring 24, as shown, the said part I efl'ectually seals the joint between the stopa rounded by a flange, the other end of said per member 6 and the inner surface of the neck 2 against the passage of any liquid.
My invention is extremely simple, strong and durable, and can be produced at a comparatively small cost, and maybe fitted to bottles of different sizes. lVhen properly applied to the bottle, the stopper mechanism cannot be withdrawn without destroying either stopper or the bottle, and the valve 22 is protected fromrtampering by the provision of the guard 10. j r
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
