To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J onsrnn S. RoGnRs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Laurelhill, in the county of WValton and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Padlock; and ll do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' This invention relates to the art of locks and latches, and particularly to a new and useful padlock of the'gear type.
An object of the invention is the provisionof a padlock casing having a segmental gear bolt journaled therein, there being double means in the casing for locking the segmental gear bolt against being unlocked. However, after the gear bolt is unlocked the same may be operated to an open position by gear connections with a suitable key.
a In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved padlock. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line of Fig. 2 showing parts in elevation, in other words showing the cover plate of a casing removed, and the riveted pins for securing thecover plate in place in section, and illustrating the segmental gear bolt locked in its closed position. Fig. 4: is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the segmental gear bolt unlocked and thrown open. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a sectional view transversely of Fig. 3 on line 66 thereof. Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view on line 7-7 ofFig. 3. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the segmental gear bolt, and the gears for operating the same, and illustrating the means for doubly locking the segmental gear bolt against being opened. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of an abutment which must be first operated to unlock the segmental bolt. Figs. 10 and 1 1 are detail views of two keys to be .used in conjunction with the lock for unlocking the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a pin 7.
rectangular casing, but which may be any other desirable or suitable shape. This cas: ing comprises a body2 and a cover plate 3, which is secured to the body by means of riveted pins or the like 1. The body 2 is chambered or hollowedout to, form a suit able pocket 5, the upper portion of which is semi-circular in' contour as shown at 6, and journaled upon a pin 7 of the casing is a segmental gear member 8 having the gear teeth 9 and'the semi-circular bolt 10.
In Fig. 3 the segmental gear member 8 is in a position so that the bolt 10 is locked,
and in Fig. 4c the segmental gear member has been operated, therefore the bolt 10 is unlocked. The pocket 5 is provided with a plurality of offset recesses 11, 12 and 13. Loosely mounted upon a pin 1% in the recess 11, by reason of an elongated slot 15 is the shank 16 (in which the slot 15 is formed) of the abutment dog 17 which is provided with an abutment shoulder .18, which, before the dog is thrown outwardlytoward the cover plate, lies in the path ofthe segmental gear member, therefore assisting in preventing the member from being actuated upon the Secured in a recess 19 by means of small screws 20 is a leaf spring 21, the free end of which is forked as shown at 22, to straddle the, pin 23, which passes through an elongated slot 24 of the dog, so that the dog may be moved toward the cover plate. The leaf spring 21 acts to hold the dog toward the segmental gear member, so that the shoulder 18 will be in the path of the edge portion 25 of the segmental gear member, to prevent it from being operated. The inner face of the dog beyond the shoulder 18 is provided with a curved cam cutaway portion 27, and extending outwardly from the portion 28 of the casing is a key pin journal 29 for the barrel 30 of the key 31. This key 31 isprovided with a cam tongue 32,
which, when the key 31 is turned, passes bebind the dog and cams against the cutaway portion 27, thereby moving the dob: toward the cover plate, against the action of the leaf spring 21, and moving the shoulder 18 from the path of theedge portion 25 of the the-segmental gear memberwill be actuated,
so as to open or close the bolt 10. Secured at 37 in the recess 12 (the bottom of which is not quite as deep as the bottom of the pocket fromfwhere the pins 23 and pro ject) is a bar 38 having a, slot 39, through which the pin 35 extends.

which inturn will rotate the gear 34 and the'segmental gear 8, that is, after the shoulder18 has been moved from the path of the edge 25 of the segmental gear member. YVhen thesegmental gear member-is rotated in the direction of the arrow a, the bolt 10 s thrown open, and while being thrown open,the face (which is adjacent the cover pl te) of the segmental gear member will ride upon the enlarged portion of the dog, and the lug 40 willride upon the opposite face' of the gear member 8; When the segmental gear member isthrown in a reverse direction the bolt 10 is moved to a closed positiominwhich case the shoulder 18 and the lug'40 respectively of the dog and the bar 38 will spring'into locked engagement with the segmental gear member automatically 7 7 7 The invention having been set forth, what 7 is claimed as new and useful is 11A padlock comprising a casing, a seg-- mental gear memberhav ng a semi-circular bolt mountedlnthe casing for partial revoluble movement, a spring retained dog, having an abutment shoulder lying in the path of the segmental gear member to lock the same against movement, and gear connections "adapted to be actuated by a member for partially rotating the segmental gear 7 V V, This bar 38 ex tends behind the. gear 36 and the segmental member when the shoulder is its path to unlock the bolt.
2. A padlock comprising a casing, a seg mental gear member having a semi-circular bolt mounted in the casing for partial revoluble movement, a spring retained dog having an abutment shoulder lying in the path of the segmental gear member to lock the same against movement, and gear connections adapted to be actuated by a member for partially rotating the segmental gear member when the shoulder is thrown from its. path to unlock the bolt, a spring rctained bar mounted in the casing and underlying one of the gears of said connections and provided with a lateral lug at its free end, said segmental ear member having a recess to receive said ug to additionally lock the segmental gear member, said connections when actuated by the member adapted to be pressed by said member toward the back of the casing, and constituting means to withdraw the lug from the recess. a

A look comprising a casing, a segmental gear member including semi-circular bolt mounted in the casing for a partial revoluble movement, gear connections mounted in the casing to mesh with the segmental gear member and adapted to be actuated by a device, a spring retained bar underlying one of the gears of said connections and having a lateral lug at its free end, said segmental gear member including a recess to receive the lug to lock the segmental gear member against partial movement, the gear under which the spring retained bar lies adapted to be pressed toward the back of the casing thrown from device and constituting means to Withdraw the'lug from the recess.

A lock comprising a casing having a pocket provided with an upper semi-circular portion, a segmental gear member journaled in the semi-circular portion of the pocketfor a partial revoluble movement and includinga semi-circular bolt member, a pair of gears journaled midway of the pocket, one of which meshes with the segmental gear member, a dog loosely journaled in the casing for a slight movement laterally to the-casing, said dog having a shoulder lying in the path of one edge of the segmental gear member to lock the member, said dog adapted to be actuated laterally of the casing by a device to remove the shoulder from the path of the segmental gear member,'a spring retained bar underlying one of the gears of said path and having a lateral lug at its free end, a segmental gear memberhaving a recess to receive the lug, the gear under which the spring retained bar lies having means to receive a second device whereby the pair of gears may be actuated, andwhich gear under which the springretained bar lies adapted to be pressed toward the back of the casing against a spring of name to this specification in the presence of said sprang retained bar by said second dfitW0 subscribing Witnesses. vice, an constituting means to actuate t e 1 bar to Withdraw the lug from the recess, JOLSIRE ROGERS 5 whereby the segmental gear member may be Witnesses:
