Specification of Letters Patent.
@atente/d Sept.l i915.
Application filed September 23, 1917.3. 'Serial No. 291,e26.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, GRANT C.V Kiwis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ggden, in the county of lVeber and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cleaning-Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
lThis invention relates to brushes, especially cleaning brushes and has for its primary object to associate with the brush handle or head, various types of brush elements in order to obviate certain undesirable features incurred by the ordinary brush using only one type of brush element, either hair or wire, in connection with the handle.
Another object of this invention is a peculiar manner in which the brush elements are secured to the brush handle, so as to not only prevent the displacement yof the brush elements, but likewise reduce the cost of manufacture to a minimum.
Other objects as well as thernature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from Y the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification. Y
Referring to the drawings z-Figure l is a side elevation of a brush constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, a handle 5 is provided which lmay be of the ordinary or any desired form, having a portion 6 of the one end thereof reduced, said reduced portion being provided with an annular recess or groove 7, and having a concentric lug or linger 8 extending from the terminal of said reduced end.
The brush in the present instance is especially adapted for painting and analogous purposes and comprises bristles kor hair 9 of any suitable type one end of each of which is glued or otherwise secured to the eXtreme end of the reduced portion 6 of the handle Y 5 and around the finger 8 having arranged eXteriorly thereof wire elements or strands 10. One end of each of the latter is engaged with the periphery of the reduced end 6 of said handle 5 as shown to advantage `in Fic'.
2 and has the inner terminal thereof in engagement with a shoulder 1l formed by reducing the end of the handle 5 as indicated at 6. Said strands l0 areY depressed adiacent their inner terminals into Vengagement with the annular recess 7 and are held therein m a manner which will subsequently appear.
In order to retain the wire elements l() in engagement with the handle 5, a clamp element or ferrule l2 is pro yided which is preferably of the ordinary cylindrical contiguiratlon, being provided approximately midway between Vthe ends thereof, with an annular collar 13 which engages with the wires 1Q, so as to hold the same in engagement with the annular recess 7 of said handle, the one end of said ferrule extending to the end of said handle, the opposite end thereof extending for a distance toward the opposite end of said handle as advantageously illustrated in Figs. l and 2.
It is seen that the bristles or hair 9 which comprise one of the brush elements, are lirst engaged with the reduced end 6 of the handle 5, and the wire elements or strands l0 are then placed around said bristles. rEhe `ferrule l2 is then inserted over the handle,
until the one end thereof extends in a plane with the terminal of the reduced end of said handle 5, and a portion thereof directly above the annular recess 7, is depressed so as to provide the collar 1,3 for snugly engaging the wire strands l0 in said annular recess 7 lt will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts, may be made within the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention. Y
Having thus fully described my invern tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A paint brush including a handle having a reduced end, the latter provided with an annular depression, bristles abutting the free terminal of said reduced end and extending longitudinally from the latter, wire strands engaged with the periphery of said reduced end and extending eXteriorly of said bristles and in parallelism therewith, and a ferrule mounted on said handle and having a portion arranged in parallel rela- In testimony whereof I aiX my signature tion with the reduced end, to embrace said in presence of tWo Witnesses. strands, Ysaid ferrule being annularly depressed inwardly to provide an annular e GRANT C' KIMES' 5 flange, adapted to flex said strands into said Vitnesses:
annular depression, to prevent displacement R. H. RYAN,
of said strands from the handle. T. V. RYAN.
