HonsEsHon Anatomy nnit.
To. all whom it may concern: i 1
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE J. STRoB, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in' Horseshoe Attachments, of which the fol-V lowing is a specification.
The present invention contemplatesthe provision of a horse shoe attachment constructed to prevent the ordinary shoe from penetrating lawns or other large areas which are trampled upon by horses, as well as to afford a firm footing for the animal to permit the device tobe used in the capacity of an anti-slipping attachment. 7
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter. more fullydescribed and claimed.
In the drawings forming a part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the severalviews and in which:
Figure 1 is, a side elevation of my invenw tion. Fig. 2 is a front end elevation thereof.
Fig.3 is a rear end elevation thereof. Fig.
4 is a bottom plan View thereof. Fig. 5 is a top plan view'partly shown in dotted lines. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of-the wire anchor. Fig. 7 is a plan view of the intermediate sole.
Referring more particularly to the drawings 5 indicates the outer sole, 6 the inner sole, and 7 an intermediate sole, these soles being preferably constructed from leather or other suitable material and held together by fastening means such as rivets 4. It will be observed that the soles 6 and 7 are of smaller dimensions with respect to the outer sole 5 so as to be adapted to the actual size of the hoof of the animal which is to rest upon the inner sole 6.
A toe cap is indicated at 8 constructed from leather, metal or other suitable material and whichhas an edge portion fitted between the soles 5 and 7 and secured in position by means of the rivet 1. This cap is Application filed January 23, 1915. Serial No. 3.975. V
Specificatiouof was radial Patented Sep tfl, 1915.
' erly positioned with respect to the hoof of the animal, I employ what is termed an anchor l2 constructed froma single length of wire and comprising a substantially semicircular sectional body portion 13 terminating in offset eyes 14:,- the sections 13 of the body portion being formed at their point of uncture to provide intermediate upstanding eyes 15, through which and the eyes 1 1 the strap 10 is threaded. The sections 13 of the semicircular body portion are curved upwardly from the terminals 16 of the eyes 15 and are adapted to engage the straps 1O inthe manner shown to hold the latter in proper position with respect to the hoof of the animal. The terminals 18 of the eyes 15are extended to provide the forwardly projecting loop 19 whichpasses through a slot 20 formed in the inner sole 6 which latter communicates with a longitudinally disposed slot 21 in the intermediate sole 7 as clearly shown in Fig, 7, the slot-21 being provided to facilitate the insertion of thev loop 19 between the soles 5 and .7 respectively. The loop 19 straddles the rivet bolt 22 so. as to be guidedby .said'bolt in its movement, it of course, being understood that the loop may be extended relatively to said bolt to adjust the" anchor 12 with respectto the hoof ofthe animal. By reason of the peculiar construction of the anchor 12 it will be further noted that the loop 19 straddles the eyes 15 thus preventing eXcessive spreading of the sections 18 of the semicircular body portion of the anchor.
A guard 23' comprising a piece of leather or any other suitable flexible material is employed and adapted to surround the sides of theanimals hoof, the guard being provided at its opposite ends with slots 241 through which passes both the eyes 14 of the anchor 12 and the strap 10, the guard being fur ther provided adjacent its lower edge with a slot 25 through which the loop 19 of the anchor projects for operative engagement with the rivet bolt 22.
In use the hoof of the animal with the ordinary shoe is placed upon the inner sole 6, and by reason of the construction of the anchor 12 of the strap 10 and guard 23 may be adjusted rearwardly to facilitate the ap plication of the attachment to the hoof of the animal. The ends of the strap 10 may be secured together by means of the buckle gether with the guard 11 will be moved into effective engagement with the hoof of the animal. I
While I have shown and described what I now consider the preferred form of my in-.
vention I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative and that various changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A horse shoe attachment comprising a broad flat sole, a toe cap secured thereto, a hoof engaging strap having one end connected with the cap, a wire anchor adjustably mounted upon said sole and formed to provide a circumferential series of spaced eyes through whichsaid strap is passed, a flexible guard mounted upon said strap and anchor, and means for securing the free ends of said strap.
2. A horse shoe attachment comprisinga broad flat sole, a toe cap secured thereto, a hoof engaging strap having one end connected with said cap, an anchor adjustably mounted upon said sole, means for guiding said anchor in its adjustments, said anchor being constructed from a single length of material and including a semicircular body portion terminating to provide oflset eyes through whichsaid strap is passed, a guard mounted upon said strap and anchor, and means for securing the free ends of said strap. Y
-3. A horse shoe attachment comprising a broad flat sole, a toe cap secured at one end thereof, a hoof engaging strap having one end connected to said cap, an anchor constructed from a single length of material and including a sectional semicircular body Copies of this patent ma be obtained for five 'cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
portion terminating in ofi'set eyes, upstanding eyes formed at the point of juncture of said sections, said strap being passed through said eyes, a guard mounted upon said strap and anchor, said anchor being slidably adjustable with respect to the sole, and means for fastening the free ends of the strap.
4. A horse shoe attachment comprising a broad flat sole, a toe cap secured thereto, a hoof engaging strap having one end connected to said cap, a wire anchor including an intermediate forwardly projecting loop slidably embedded in the sole, and a sectional semicircular body portion disposed above the sole, said sections terminating in offset eyes and provided with upstanding eyes at their point of juncture with said loop, said strap being passed through said eyes, a guard carried by the strap and anchor, and means for fastening the free ends of the strap.
5. A horse shoe attachment comprising a broad fiat sole, reinforcing soles secured thereupon, a toe'cap overlying the uppermost sole, a. hoof engaging strap connected with said cap, a wire anchor including a semicircular body portion having a circumferential series of eyes through which the strap is passed, a guard mounted upon said strap and anchor, said anchor being formed with an intermediate forwardly projecting loop passed through said guard and slidably mounted between said soles, means for guiding saidcover in its adjustment and means for securing the free ends of said strap.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. I I LAWRENCE J. STROB.
