NETE@ DIAL rnsnrnnicaron. f
To all whom, 'it may concern j n Beit known that I, FRANK ZAHQRIK, subc- `residing at Racine, inthe county of Racine, Stateof lisconsin, have invented certain new `and useful Improve ments in Dial Test-Indicators; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y f
This invention relates to ymeasuring instruments and has special reference to a dial test indicator.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character. y
A second object of the invention is to provide,
` lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1, is a face view of the device constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2, is a section on the Fig. 3, is a view similar to Fig. 1 but with the dial removed and the casing broken away to show the operating parts. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a case 10 having mounted thereon a ring 11 which is so arranged as to rotate on the casing. This ring 11 carries a dial 12 provided with graduations 13, each of these graduations preferably indicating one Aone-thousandth of an inch. The usual watch crystal 14 covers the dial' and protects theparts from dust. j
Fixed to the bottom of the casing is a bearing 15 for the staff 16 of a pinion 17. This staff extends through the dial and carries on its outer end a hand or pointer 18 which traverses the dial as the pinion isy rotated. Extending from the side ofthe casing is a tubular projection 19 wherein is mounted a spindle 20, the spindle having a head 21 provided with a beveled end 22. One side of the head is flattened at 23 and bears lSpecification ofLetters Patent. i Animation iedfnuyfzs, 1914. serial No. 852,742.
in a device of this character means for preventing back lash in the gearing used.
` rateateuscpe. fz, isis.
l against the fbottom'of the casing to prevent the rotation of the'spindle and this holds thebeveledface in proper position. Mounted within thecasing is a staffl v24 carrying a lever'arm 25 provided with a head 26 which engages the beveled end of the head 22. j
This stad 24 carries a secondarm 27 supporting at its end asegmental gear28 which.y
meshes with the pinion 17. A short arm 29 also projects from the staff 24 and is connected byka sprmg 30 to a pin 31 within r`the casing.
Now when the spindle 20 is forced inward this will cause movement of the gear 28 and consequently rotation of the pinion 17 so that the hand 18 will traverse the dial.
Owing to the beveled face 22 the movement of the hand will correspond correctly to the inward movement of the spindle 20 with the exception of the lost motion between the gear and pinion, the bevel being properly arranged to this end. The spring 30 will,`
of course, return the parts when pressure on the spindle 2O is relaxed.
In order to prevent the lost motion above referred to there is pivoted within the casing a second lever 32 carrying at its end a segmental gear 33 which meshes with the pinion 17 on the side opposite the gear 28. A second spring 34 is employed to hold the lever 32 in such a position as to cause constant engagement of the teeth on the gear 33 with the yteeth of the pinion 17. In order to proj videfor the lever 32 the casing is provided withy an extension 35 and this extension carries at one end a bearing 36 for a spindle 37, the latter being arranged at right angles to the spindle 20. This spindle is shouldered within the casing and the rounded end 38 of the lever 32 rests on this shoulder. Both spindles are provided with threaded sockets for the reception of the threaded stems 39 of contact points 40 the latter being of any desired shape. Now, if either ofthe spindles be forced in the spring controlled remaining spindle will be tensioned so that there will be no lost motion or back lash in the gearing.
Inuse the dial can be rotated to bring the zero point beneath the end of the hand wheneverk desired the measurements being started from such positions. Furthermore a suit able ear 41 is providedon the back of the casing for attachment of the device to any support.
There has thus been provided a simple ir tion to the exact Vio and eflicient device of the kind describedand of the character specified. Y Y
It Will he obvious thatV many minor changes may be made iii the form and con- Vstruction of this invention Without depart,-
ing from the material principles thereof;V It is not therefore desired to confine the invendescribed, but it is wished to include all such as come properly lWithin the scope'claimed.
