WATCHGASE cons'rnuc'rion.
Application filed March 16, 1915.
.of hunting watches, and still more particularly to means for opening and closing one side of said cases, and the object thereof is a to provide the rim of the case of a watch of the class specified with an improved spring construction operated by the winding stem of the watch which is movable inwardly and outwardly to open the front of the case and by Which'the said front of the case is also held in a closed position; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of a watch case provided with my improvement and showing the front side in an open position; Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4, side views respec tively of two separate spring metal blanks which I employ; and, Figs. 5 and 6 are side views respectively of springs made from the blanks shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a the rim of what is ordinarily called a hunters case watch and the hinged front side of which is shown at b. The front side I) of the case is hinged at b and the rim a is channeled on its inner side, or provided with a deep annular groove a and at 0 I have shown the winding post which is movable inwardly and outwardly through an aperture in the rim a at a The winding post 0 is provided inwardly of the rim a with a collar 0 and the inner end 0 of said winding post extends inwardly a predetermined distance from said collar, and

Serial No. 14,634.
in the practice of my invention, I provide two curved spring devices d and 6 shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and which are placed in the opposite side portions of the rim or, and which are formed respectively from the blanks shown at d and e in Figs. 3 and 4. The end portion d of the blank (1 is wider than the other end portion d thereof, in the constructionshown, and the end portion (Z is provided with a longitudinally extended tongue 6Z5, while the end portion a? is provided with a laterally directed tongue 03 The end portion 6 of the blank 6 is wider than the end portion e of said blank and is provided with a longitudinally extended tongue 6 while the end portion 6* of said blank is provided with a longitudinal reduced extension 6 having a laterally directed tongue 6 My invention, however, is not limited to the exact shape or form of the blanks (Z and e and the object thereof, as shown and described, is to enable the wider end portions (Z and e of said blanks to hold the spring devices (Z and 6 more securely in the annular groove a of the rim a, and to give the end portion (5* of one blank and the end portion c e of the other greater elasticity and at the same time reduce the strength of the end portion 6 -e of the blank 6 The springs (Z and e are formed by folding the blanks d and 6 as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the larger end portion being folded upon the body portion so that the end portions d and 6 pro ject as shown. The springs (Z and e are placed in the opposite sides of the rim a in reversed position, and the larger end portions thereof, or the tongue members 03 and e are formed into loops 7 through which are passed pins f which secure said springs in the rim. The winding postcpasses loosely through the end of the part d of the spring d and the tongue (Z thereof is formed into a hook-shaped catch at which catches and holds the side Z) of the casing when said side is swung into a closed position, as clearly indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
When the springs 03 and e are secured in position, in the manner shown, the reduced or free end 6 of the spring 6 is just within the hinged point of the side Z) of the case, and the tongue 6 of the spring e is bent as shown at a in Figs. 1 and 2 to form a finger which bears on the side 6 0f the case just outwardly of the hinge b and, by reason of this construction, said spring 2 operates to open the front side case member I) when the winding post a is forced inwardly, and said side front member of the case is released from the spring (1, or the hook-shaped member (1 thereof by the forcing of the winding post inwardly and the spring 6, or the part 6 thereof holds the front case member I) in an open position until said front case member b is forced into the closed position by hand. The outer end of the winding post 0 passes outwardly through a tubular neck 9 connected with the arm a and is provided with the usual knob or head by which said post is manipulated, but as this forms no part of my invention said knob or head is not shown. 7
My invention is not limited to the exact shape or form of the blanks d and e from which the springs (l and e are made, as herein described, nor is it limited to the exact form of the said springsd and e, and various changes in and modifications of the details of my improvement herein shown and described may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I- claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a watch case, a rim provided at one side with a hinged side member and at the opposite side with a radially movable winding post, spring devices countersunk in opposite side portions of the rim and one of which serves to lock the hinged side case member in a closed position and the other to force said hinged side case member open when the lock is released and said lock being released by the inward movement of the winding post, said spring devices being formed from strips of metal bent to form parallel parts one of which is longer than the other, and the shorter )a'rts being free from the longer parts at their ends and being provided with loops through which are passed pins by which said spring devices are secured to the case, and the longer parts being free from the case throughout their lengths.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 13th day of March, 1915.
JACOB MURSET.
