To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM F. SOHEU- BER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshall, in the county of Harrison and State of Texas, have invented a new. and useful Expansion-Reamer, of which the following is a specification. I
The present invention appertains to reamers, and aims to provide a novel and improved expansion reamer.
This invention has for its object, the provision of "an expansion reamer having unique means for adjusting and holding the cutters.
It is also within the scope of the invention, to provide an expansion reamer which will be comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction and manufacture, which may be readily taken apart in order that Worn or broken parts may be readily replaced, which may be adjusted quickly and accurately, and which is durable, substantial, practical and efiicient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of What is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the improved expansion reamer. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of the reamer, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged end view of one of the cutters. 4 is a cross section on the line 44 of Fig. 1. Tn carrying out the invention, the 'reamer embodies a stock or body 1, having a reduced threaded stub 2' atits rear. end, and having a central bore 3 extending from a point adjacent the rear end of the stock, to the other or forward end thereof. The stock 1 is also provided with an annular series of longitudinal slots 4 Whose ends terminate short of the ends of the bore 3, and the inner or rear ends of the slots 4 are inclined or beveled, as at 5. A tapered expansion pin 6 is disposed within the bore 3 of the stock 1, and has its butt or largest end fitting snugly or slidably within'the rear end portion of the bore 3, while the smallest end of the pin 6 is provided with a threaded stem or extension 7 of uniform diameter, and passing slidably through a bushing 8 fitted snugly within the forward end of the bore 3.
This bushing 8 is provided with an annular outstanding flange 9 seated against the forward end of the stock 1. The butt end of the pin 6 working snugly within the bore 3, and the stem or extension 7 of the pin sliding through the bushing 8, serve to hold the pin 6 in a coaxial or concentric position relative to the stock, and allows the pinto re: ciprocate within the stock for adjusting the cutters 10. 4 i
The cutters 10 are elongated and are disposed slidably within the slots 4 of i the stock, the inner edges of the cutters being inclined or arranged obliquely, corresponding with thetaper of the pin 6, so as to bear or seat against the periphery of the pin 6 between the butt end and stem of the pin. The outer or cutting edges may be of any suitable configuration, according to the nature of the work to be done. The inner or rear ends of the cutters 10 are inclined or beveled as at 11 so as to abut against the inclined or "beveled'ends 5 of the slots 4, for holding the inner or rear ends of the cutters against outward move ment when the cutters are clamped, and to cause the cutters to hugthe pin 6 when the parts are in clamped position. The forward or outer ends of the cutters10are also in clined o'r beveled, as at 12, for cooperation with the clamping or holding device. This clamping or holding device embodies a sleeve or cylindrical nut 13 threaded upon the forward end portion of the stock 1 at the outer ends of the slots 4, and a collar 14 disposed slidably upon the stock between the sleeve 01' nut 13 and the beveled or inturned ends 12 of the cutterslO. The rear edge of the collar 14 is beveled as at 15, to contact snugly with the forward ends of the cutters, whereby the nut or sleeve 13 is tightened, the forward ends of the cutters 10 will be locked against outward movement, and will be forced inwardly, snugly against the pin 6. The flange 9 of the bushing 8 is of smaller diameter than the bore of the sleeve 13, in order that the sleeve may move over thebushing without interference.

Asa convenient means'for attaching the stock 1 toa chuck, or the like, a shank member20 is threaded over the stub 2 of the stock, and is-provided with a squared or otherwise formed end, as at 21, forengagement with the chuck. 1 s p In order thatthe cutters 10 may be adjusted with' accuracy, the nut 16 is provided with an outstanding annular flange 22 which is; received by a circular depression or counter-bore 23 formed in the outer end of the bushingS, the outer face of the flange 22 being provided 'with a pointer 22 which cooperateswith an amiular scale of graduations 23* provided upon the outer face of the flange 9 of the bushingS, whereby the angular position ofthe nut .16 about the aXis of the pin 6 may be determined. It is thus essential, that the bushing 8 be held against rotation, with respect to the stock,

and the basal. end portion of the pin 6 is provided with a longitudinal key or feather way receiving the inner end of a key or feather 26, to prevent the pin 6 from rotating, but to enable the same to be adjusted longitudinally. It will thus be evident that the bushing 8 and pin 6 are held non-rotatably withinthe stock,.whereby the nut 16 in beingv rotated, maybe adjusted through the medium of the pointer 22 and graduations 23 for accurately setting the cutters 10.
To adjust the cutters 1O inwardly, the nuts 16, 17 and 18 are loosened, to permit the pin 6 to be moved rearwardly. sufliciently, whereby the cutters 10 may be moved inwardly to the extent desired, and in which event the sleeve 13 is threaded rearwardlyv to-cause the collar 14 to bind between the sleeve and cutters.

This will cause the cutters to be forced inwardly 'rearwardly upon the stem 7, to draw the expansion pin 6 forwardly, until the cutters have been forced outwardly sulficiently. The sleeve. 13 may then be screwed tight, to clamp the cutters in place, and the nuts 17 and 18 may also be tightened for assisting in holding the parts in adjusted position.
When it is desired to collapse the reamer, and to later reset the cutters to the same position which they assumed before the reamer was collapsed, the nuts 17 and 18 are first unscrewed and then screwed to bind or lock each other in a fixed position upon the stem 7. The distance between the nuts 16 and 17 is then noted by a gage or other suitable implement, and the nut 16 may then be unscrewed for loosening the pin 6, and allowing the cutters to collapse. Then when it is desired to reset the cutters, the nut 16 is threaded inwardly so as to assume the same position with respect to the nut 17, as it did before, this being facilitated by spacing the nut 16 from the nut 17 through the medium of the gage or Then, when the sleeve 13 is tightened, the cutters will be clamped at the/same position as before.
The present reamer is substantial and economical, and enables a quick adjustment to be had. The reamer also enables of a relatively large amount of adjustment of the cutters, and the parts may be readily separated and assembled for the purpose of replacing worn or broken parts. Thus, when the sleeve 13 is unscrewed, the cutters 10 can be moved outwardly out of the slots 4, and the pin 6 may then be drawn out of the bore 3, with the bushing 8.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. An expansion reamer comprising a stock having a longitudinal bore and longitudinal slots, a tapering expansion pin disposed within said bore and having a stem at its smallest end projecting from one end of the stock, a bushing engaged in said end of the stock and through which said stem is slidable, the bushing and stock having interengaging means for holding them against relative rotation, cutters mounted within said slots and bearing against the pi'n,means for holding the cutters against the .pin, and
