AN'roN MILos, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
LIFE-PRESERVER.
arcaica To' all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANTON MILo, a sub.- ject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of N ew `York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Life-Preservers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention rela-tes to improvements in life preservers, the main object of which is to construct a life preserver on thel body. The box proper, which, when the wearer-has his legs and arms projected into the pockets is adapted to envelop his trunk and head, serves as a receptacle for storing away things,'to contain a water reservoir, etc., and as a stateroom into which the user may retire to' occupy a sitting position during -a quiet sea.
My invention also consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully speciiied and set forth in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts, Figure 1 shows a side ele- `vation of my device, as applied to the body of the userv in standing position;rFig., 2 is a' plan view thereof; Fig. 3 isa vertical section of the device shown as floating on the j water and Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional `bottom is cutout, as at a', a2. Fastened to the box around ilthe edges of the cut out parts is a flexible piece b of waterproof material formed at one end with outwardly projecting leg receiving pockets c in form of pantaloons, and at' the opposite end with similar pockets d for receiving the arms of the wearer. The central portion e is in the form of a. bag or sack and serves as a con-v Specication of Letters Patent. l Patented Aug. 31, 1915,
Application led J une 4, 1915. Serial N o. 32,056. v
' tainer of articles, such as food or the like or other loaeladapted to counterbalance the load on the back of the wearer'when in standing position. On the opposite side or back of the rigid box is an opening as through which the user can enter the box. Around the opening a3 projecting angesa are provided and, hinged at one side of the opening, as at'a' is a lid f, which canbe closed and opened at will.v A suitable locking device, 'such as a spring f', may be provided to hold'the lid tightly closed when so desired.
At the upper or forward end the box is formed with a. compartment g serving as a reservoir to contain drinking Water for the user. At the opposite end a pocket h is provided to receive the belongings of the user. i
In the front or lo'wer wall the box -is provided with a glass window i, through which the user after applying the device isenabled to see his way' while walking or propelling himself in the water. An air supply pipe c may be provided on the back or upper side of the box which may be arranged and constructed in a suitable manner to prevent water from entering the `box through the same. To allow of theoccupant or his device being'easily fished out of the water, a number of wires 1 or the like may be provided, preferably asA shown.
It will be seen that by virtue of the above named construction, the user on entering the box and slippingfhis arms and legs .into the respective pockets will have his body and head entirely concealed within the box and can in an upright position freely propel himself on land, in shallow water or on |board of-ship. In water the user may adopt a horizontal swimming position and propel n himself by manipulating .hisarms and legs. During a quiet sea, the user may withdraw his arms and legs from within the respective pockets andvon opening the lid may roject his head through the opening ai. Ile may sit down on the rigid part a? of the box and place his legs in the pocket e or he may hook a seat m to theedges aIt around the opening a3. To secure the device to the body' of the user, straps n like Suspenders or the like may be attached in the box which the user can readily slip over his shoulders,'
as shown in Fig. 1.v
stood that various modicatons may be made by those "Skilled in, the m without' di,- pa'rting fromgthe spirit of my invention and I, therefor, do not AWish 4torestrict my- .self to 'theiietails vshown-and .v-described.
What I claim and -fdes-re to secure by Letters, Patent is: .l
" 1. A'life preserver, consisting of'ga' rigid 2. Aglife -preserver, consisting of a rigid, A receptacle,v having at one side .an Aentrance 'opening and a lidtherefor, and at the oppositeside a piece of flexible material in form of a .bag and provided With extensions forming leg andarm reeiving'pockets.
3. A llife preservar, conslstingIof a rigid hol, havingilexilole extensions forming leg and arm receiving pockets 4and a flexible bag to receivetomeload which Willcunterhalance the weight of the box when the -user is in standing position.l
opening and at the oppbsite side apiece' offlexible material formed with arm and leg extensions and means on the receptacle for catching and fishing the latter `ou't of-the Water. y' 1 5. A life preserver, consisting of-a rigid receptacle having at .one side an entrance opening, a lid therefor, and on the opposite side a piede of flexible material formed With arm and 'leg extensions and an air s pply pipe on said receptacle.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
' ANTON MILoS.
