MAN and CLARENCE P. CHAMBERLIN, Vcitizens of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county f Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certa-in new and useful'lmprovements in Fasteners for Automobile-Hoods, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to fasteners for automobile hoods and has among the objects thereof to provide a simple and eflicient construction for securing the hood in its closed position; to provide a device which will not rattle; to provide a structure by which a retaining bearing for the lower edge of the hood is had; and further to provide Va fastener which is permitted a universal movement. f
Other objects of the invention will more fully hereinafter appear.
The invention resides in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention, showing the same as applied to a hood; and Fig. 2is a perspective view of the fastener.
A designates the hood of an automobile, and B is a knob or button thereon.
C is the latch member composed of a handle portion D and a chambered portion E.
Within the chamber E is arranged a spring F that is Asleeved upon a bolt G. The upper end of the bolt is provided with a head I for engaging one end of the spring F, while the opposite end of the spring seats against an inwardly-extending flange J spun .on the lower end of the chamber E. The
` chamber' E is preferably cylindrical and the handle D is preferably formed wide and flat, terminating at its upper end in a hookshaped portion or finger-hold K.
L is an aperture in the handle-portion for engaging the button B. l
The lower end of the member G projects for a slight distance without the chamber E and has a head M. The inner face N of the Aheadis rounded to engage a rounded socket O in an; attaching clip P. The clip P isv slotted as at Q, to permit the head M to be -engaged with 'the socket O, the slot Q being of a size to receive the bolt Gr but being of lesser cross-section than the cross-section of the head M, so that when the head is engaged withl the socket, it can be withdrawn therefrom only by a lateral movement.
R is a-lange extending laterally from the clip P and this fiange is curved upwardly to form a suitable seat for engaging the lower edge of the hood A, this hood edge being usually beaded, as indicated by S. In use, after the head M is engaged with the socket O, the clip P is attached to the frame T of thevehicle as by means of screws which pass through apertures Y in laterally-extending ears lW on the member P. The clip P is so positioned that the seat R is in proper relagagement at all times between the fastener and the button B. As before stated, the head M has the inner face N thereof rounded to engagethe rounded seat O. This forms a connection between the clip P and the bolt G that will permit a universal'movement between these parts, thereby avoiding any tendency to rupture the fastener by a sudden 'twisting strain.
The. latch member C is preferably formed from tubulaistock, the wide, flat handle D being made by flattening the tube. This arrangement not only facilitates manufacturing the article but also gives the desired strength and rigidity to the handle portion D, since the latter is formed of two-ply metal.
