FEED-WATER HEATER.
Specification of Letters ram. at a-t Awe 31, 1915 Application filed. December 9, 1914. Serial No. 876,338.
. ers for steam boilers,-and its object isto provide a novel and improved feed water heater which utilizes the arch tubes in the fire box of the boiler, the heater being thus specially applicable to boilers of the locomotive type having a fire box in which is mounted an arch supported on tubes connecting the front and rear water legs of the fire box. 7
In order that the invention may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which' c Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section through the fire box of the boiler showing the application of the invention, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. i
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes the fire box of a boiler of the ordi nary locomotive type. The fire box has the usual water legs and contains anarch 6 which is supported by tubes 7 connecting the front and rear walls of the fire box and opening into the water spaces. These arch tubes are employed for heating theufeed water by mounting therein pipes 8 having perforations 9 through which the feed water discharges into the tubes. The diameter of the pipes is less than that of the tubes, and they are therefore spaced from the interior surface of the latter. The pipes are connected at one end to the outside back sheet 10 of the firebox, and they are closed at this end by a plug 11. The other ends of the pipes pass through the outside front sheet 12 of the fire box, and are connected thereat to a distributing box orchamber 13 mounted on the outside of the sheet 12 and extending transversely of the fire box, and made straight or curved to follow the contour of said sheet.
The water distributing chamber 13v has, on one side, midway between its ends, a laterally offset portion 1 1 to the opposite sides of which are connected the water supply pipes15 leading from the injector or feed pump. 1 The chamber is divided. into a number of compartments means of partitions 16, the number of suchcompartments 5 corresponding to the number of pipes 8. F our of such pipes are shown, and the chamber is therefore provided with three partitions, forming four compartments, one for each pipe. The center partition extends straight from one side of the chamber, and
the two end partitions extend convergingly from said side. A l three partitions also extend partly into the offset portion 145 of the chamber. f
. In operation, the feed water enters the offset portion 14: of the chamber 13 andis divided by the partitions 16 so as to fill. the compartments at thesame rate. in each compartment passes into thecorresponding pipe 8 and is sprayed through the perforations 9 into the arch tubes 7. As the pipes are immersed in the hot water in the arch tubes, the feed water is heated on its way to discharge into said tubes. I claim I l. The combination with a locomotive fire box having water legs and. arch tubes connecting the same, of feed water pipes extending lengthwise through said tubes and discharging thei'einto, and a distributing chamber mountedon the outside of the fire box and having a water inlet, said chamber having partitions whereby it is divided into a plurality of compartments, to which the aforesaid pipes are connected respectively.
9.. The combination with a locomotive fire box iaving water legs and arch tubes connecting the same, of feed water pipes extending lengthwise through said tubes and d scharging thereinto, and distributing chamber mounted on the outside of the fire box and having a water inlet, said chamber havingon one side an intermediate laterally offset portion to which the water inlet is connected, and-partitions in the chamber dividing the same into plurality of compartments to which the aforesaid pipes are connected respectively, said partitions ex the offset portion of the S. J. LEHRER, H. BArcHEnoii.
