STEAM-BOILER ATTACHMENT. il
Application led January 18, 1922. Serial'No. 530,196.
This invention relates especially to steam heating or other boilers in which special geyser devices are arranged to automatically supply water to the upper sections or portions of the boiler in which this water is preferably evaporated in thin sheets or streams. Many of the sectional steam heating boilers are provided with transverse evapor'a'ting channels or heating surfaces. which when the lower surfaces of these channels are slightly inclined and preferably somewhat ribbed or corrugated form efficient evaporating surfaces when water is automatically supplied thereto during the operation of the boiler by geyser devices of the general type covered by the Alexander Patent 1,240,804 of September25, 1917. These geyser devices may in many cases comprise one or more coils of pipe or other evaporatingunits installed iny the firse box portion or section of the boiler and having a water supply pipe and geyser tube or discharge connectionV which may be conveniently carried out in many cases through the usual cored holes which are cast in heating boilers for hot water connections. In this way when the boiler is operating suflicient evaporation occurs in these geyser devices to automatically supply water to the upper sections of the boiler where it may be distributed over the evaporating channels or heating surfaces to be evaporated thereon efficiently and suppleinentthe steam generated in the lower part of the'boiler, the water line being, of course, kept substantiali ly lower than. in regular boiler practice so that at least a considerable proportion of the upper heating surfaces can actas steam chambers or channels in which this film type evaporation can take placeas in the Alex-- ander boilers.
In the accompanyingl drawing, showing various illustrative embodiments of this inv ention,`
Fig.4 1 is a vertical side section taken through a substantially square bodied or sectioned boiler, on line 1. --1,V Fig. 2.r
VFig... 2 is aV verticalV rear sectional view thereof. on line 2-2", Fig.V 1, looking. toward the front. j
, F-ig. 3 is a vertical side section through another typeofboiler. v
Fig, 4 is a partial front verticals'ectio'n thereof; I
Fig. `5 is a partial side section through another illustrative boiler, and
Fig. 6 is a front vertical section thereof.
The boiler may be of any desired type and construction and preferably comprises a. number of evaporating channels or heating units which vmay be operated above the normal or static water level inthe boiler so as to evaporate under efficient conditions the films or streams ofwater supplied thereto by the connected geyser devices.` In the Fig. 1 arrangement the ashpit portion 1 may be provided with the usual door 2 and with ya grate on which may rest the fire 8 inthe re boi: portion 4 of the boiler which may be of water jacketed construction so asl to have vthe water space 5. This fire boX section may have connected thereto by push nipples or otherwise the desired number of superimposed evaporating sections such as 7, 10 and 11 on which a steam dome such as 21 may be mounted and provided with smoke passages 22, 23 to whichthe smoke pipe may be connected. Each of these. evaporating sections may, as indicated in Fig; 27 comprise a series of separated channels such as 7 which preferably have their upper surfaces somewhat arched or inclined to facilitate the discharge of soot from these reduced area upper surfaces while the lower heating surfacesy of each of these channels is Hatter and preferably somewhatv inclined as from the front to the rear of the boiler and in the upper.l
evaporat-ing sections at least this lower survface such as 8, 9. is preferably ribbed or way as by the desired number of push nipples 12, 18, 14 and 15 between the adjacentsections so as to allow ample circulation of water and steam between them while allow'- ing for thev heat expansion which takes place between the sections under service conditions` As indicated in Fig. 1, severalof the upper rowsor sets of evaporatingA channels:
are above the 'normal or static water line -6 row ofl evaporating channels next 'the' fire' normally covered Vwith water,
The g'eyser .device maybe offE any distributed over these heating surfaces above the normal water level elfand flows over them as it is evaporatedvefciently in the form of thin iilms or streams.v
