Description

UNITED STATES i ATENE OFFICE..
JOSEPH H. OONGDON, OF OOVENTRY, ASSIGNOB TO HIMSELF AND BENJA MIN O. ALLEN, OF WARWICK, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN GHIMNEV-GOLLARS! Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. `115,168, dated May 23, 1871.
To` all 'whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, J osEPH H. GoNGDoN, of the town of Coventry, in the count-y of Kent and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimney-Collars; and Ido hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the drawing making a part of thesame, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, in which- Figure l represents a perspective View of my improvement, showing the upper surface.
My invention consists in forming a metallic plate to be inserted in a chimney for the purpose of conducting water from the inside of the iiue, and preventing leakage fronrthe ontside of the chimney around that portion of the roof of a house whereit passes through.
To enable othersskilled in the art to manufacture and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Fig. 1 represents one form of chimney-collar, which would be applicable to a peaked roofed house.
A is a metallic plate, bent to the appropriate shape for the slant of the roof, and made with raised caps D D to tit the square of the chimney. A hole is made through the center with a ange, O, formed on its edges; this hole, being smaller than the liue of the chimney to which it is toV be applied, brings the ange C a short distance inside, forming a trough to catch the water, in stormy weather, that is driven through the pores of the bricks or runs down the inside of the chimney-top. B B are tubes or outlets made on the raised caps D D, and in position to extend from the flue of thechimney to its outside. Asplate A is leakage of chimneys.
The apparatus can be applied to any chimf ney by rebuilding the top, or by raising that portion of the brick structure with jackscrews.
'lhe advantages of my improvement are,`
when building new chimneys it can be inserted with less trouble than the ordinary way, and can be made water-tight wit-hout the use of lead-Hashings or paint-skins, the brick superstructure being laid in mortar upon the raised caps D D, and plate A insures its retention in position as strong as any part of the chimney, the mortar or cement in which the bricks are laid adhering to the plate as well as to a course of bricks.
I am aware chimney-collars have been made and used before my invention in stopping the My improvement relates to the insidev flange C, in connection with the outlets B B, plate A, and raised caps D D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,`
rI he iiangeO, in connection with the outlets B B, and in combination with plateA and raised caps l) D, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH H. CONGDON.
