VIMPROVEMENT m CLOTHES-WRINGERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,161, dated May' 23, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CYRUS E. CARTER, of Martinsville, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Wringer; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section.

My improved wringer belongs to that class in which the upper roller is worked by an apparatus consisting of rods,,levers, and treadles, while the lower roller remains stationary.

v Heretofore the treadle and connected parts have been, arranged at such an angle to the rollers as to occupy much space, be difficult of operation, and open to other objections not necessary to specify here.

My ingention consists, mainly, in arranging the t'readle and connected parts in the same plane with the rollers, so that they may be placed or packed closely together in boxes or cases, or, in short, always occupy a minimum of space. This renders the apparatus, as a whole, much easier to be handled, less liable to be broken or get out of order, and alto: gether more desirable for domestic use.

Referringto the drawing, a. a are the wringerstandards, the same being constructed with shoulders I) at one side of each to support the standards upon the edge of a washing-machine, in connection with screws passed through the standards below the shoulders into the machine. e is the upper, and c the lower roller,

the j ourn als of both extending into slots formed I crosswise of the standards a, the journals of thelower roller resting on the bottoms of the slots. Both journals at each end pass through a slotted bar, 01, placed between the extremities of the rollers and the inner sides of the standards a. An offset from each bar d enters the slot of the contiguous standard, and thus guides the bar A in its upward and downward movements. The bars d are supported upon the journals of the upper roller 0. Levers f pivoted in slots formed crosswise of the standards a, below the rollers, pass through slots formed crosswise of the bars d, and to the inner ends of the levers are secured the up,- per extremities of rods g, which connect the levers with a treadle-lever, h, one of whose ends is pivoted to one of the legs of the washing-machine. By pressing the treadle h downward with the foot the operator draws down the roller e by means of the connecting-rods g, levers f, and slotted bars h, and he is thereby enabled to apply as much or as little pressure to the upper roller 0 as may be necessary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The arrangement of the treadle h, connecting-rods g g, levers f, and slotted bars dd in the same plane with the rollers c e and frame a, and connected to operate as and for the purpose specified.
