This invention relates to seat scooping machines and the principal object of the invention is to so construct and connect the parts that the movement of the knives with relation to the seat will be synchronized with the feeding action, whereby each seat will be uniformly scooped.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for. adjustably regulating the movement of the nesses of seats.
Still another object of the invention is the provision ofmeans whereby the contour of the scooped out portion of the seat may be readily controlled or determined by: a novel arrangement of cam mounting which permits the cams to be inter-changed with-f out providing additional support for the knife carrier and which insures accurate positioning of the cams.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel means for regulating th feed of the chair seats to the knives.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application,

The opposite end of the shaft 8 is provided with suitable gears 15 which mesh withcorresponding gears 16 uponthe shaft 17 journaled in the bearings 7. This shaft carries a pair of hexagonal pulleys 18 which receive the feed chains 19, these feed chains being. continuous and passing over similar pulleys 20 carried by a shaft 21 journaled in bearings 22 slidably mounted in the guide-ways 23 and held in adjusted position by the set screws 24. Each chain travels in a longitudinal. groove 25 formed in the table 1 and carries a predetermined number of raised lugs 26, the lugs being preferably arranged adjacent the rear end of each fourth link. However. it will be observed that any other arrangement of lugs may be adopted and each link is preferably constructed to receive a lug so that the machine may be made to accommodate chair seats of different widths or depths.
The shaft 17, as shown in Figs. 3 and 41., is supplied with a sprocket wheel 27 over which travels a sprocket chain 28 which connects the shaft 17 with thecam shaft 29.
This cam shaft is passed through the leg frames 2 and is journaled in bearings 30 carried thereby. The shaft 29 is provided with a suitable sprocket wheel 31to receive the chain 28. At the outer ends of the shaft 29 there is keyed to the shaft suitable sleeves 32 having lateral projections 33 which are adapted to fitin recesses 34 formed in the actuating cams 35. These cams are preferably secured to the sleeves by bolts 36 so that they may be removable to change the throw of the mechanism which they control, as will be hereinafter described.
Mounted on the outside of the leg frames are suitable guiding members 37 in which are slidably mounted what may be termed the knife carriers 38. These knife carriers are in turn provided with guide-ways 39 in which the adjusting plates 40 are slidably mounted. The plates 40 are slotted at 41 and passing through the slot is a clamping bolt 42 which holds the plates firmly against the knife carriers, as will be readily understood, the plates themselves being adjusted longitudinally of the knife carriers by means of set screws 43 which are threaded in the lugs 44 formed integrally with the knife carriers. The lower end of each plate carries a stub shaft upon which a cam en-' gaging roller 45 is journaled. These rollers are adapted to engage the cams 85 to form anti-friction and adjustable engagement between the cams and the knife carriers. Each knife carrier is provided with a pair of bearing ears 46 between which is pivoted a.
bearing 47 adapted to receive one end of the knife shaft 48 and this shaft carries suitable knives 49 which scoop out or carve the chair seats in accordance with their formation or outline. Both of the knife carriers are normally held depressed by springs 50 which engage the carriers at one endand at the opposite end are contacted by adjusting screws 51 carried in the cross bars 52 which are secured to the standards 53. These standards are arranged upon opposite sides of an opening 54 formed in the table 1 to permit the passage of the knife carriers and also form a guide for the feed roller bearings 55 in which thefeed or pressure rollers 56 are journaled, the latter bearings being held in position against adjustable stops 5'7 7 by the springs 58.

Extending above the table are suitable" standards 59 which hold the seats in stack form, as will be readily understood. Attached to one of these standards and to a relatively short standard 60 upon the opposite end of the table is a gate supporting frame comprising two bars 61 upon which are slidably mounted the gate members 62 slotted longitudinallyto receive the damp ing bolts 63. In the operation of the device chair seats are stacked upon the table against the standards 59 and gate pieces 62, the latter being adjusted so as'to permit the passage of a single seat of the thickness of seats being worked upon. The machine is then started into operation by throwing in the clutch. As each pair of lugscomes' into engagement with the chair seat it is carried forwardly beneath the rollers 56 and the knives 49. Simultaneously with this action the cam shaft shifts opposite ends ofthe knife shaft in accordance with-the scoop desired, the seats being projectedfrom the rear end of he machine as they are acted upon.
- What is claimed is In a chair seat scooping machine, a support, a feed table carried thereby, bearing carriers slidably mounted (upon the supports on opposite sidesof the table, bearings pivoted in said carriers, a knife shaft journaled in the bearings, means forvfeeding the work over the table continuously beneath the knives, said means'including a driving shaft, a shaftdrivenby the driving shaft,'sleeves secured upon the latter shaft and having lateral projections, notched cams fastened to said sleeves and projections, adjustable plates mounted on the carriers and, adapted to engage the cams, said cams being freely removable from the sleeves when the plates v. are in engagement with the lateral projections.
