Description

J. WHEELER.
GAGE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 6, 1915.
Wanna W Q A GAGE.
Application filed March 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat 1, JOHN-WHEELER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Cripple Creek, in the county of Teller and State of Colorado, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My present invention relates broadly'to new and useful improvementsin gages of the type in which a marker bar is provided for use in marking on the board or other element to be out, the desired sawing line. I
More specifically, my invention pertains to an improved form of siding gage which is adapted to be used in marking the length to which a piece of siding about to be applied to a building, shall be out.
The principal object of my present invention is to provide a siding gage which consists in three pivotally united sections, one of which serves as a means whereby the gage may be secured in supporting positionagainst the wall of the building, the second of which is adapted to be used as a marker bar when the sawing line. is being made upon the weather-board or piece of siding and the third of which is employed in determining the position of the weather-board or piece of siding which is about to be applied.
Another object and one of equal importance with the foregoing, is to so construct the device that the joint betweenthe marker bar and gage bar constitutes'a supporting lug for the new strip of weather-board which is being nailed to the building.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a partof this application.
lVith reference to the drawings, wherein there has been illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention, as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a vertical section taken through a building wall and showing the improved device in use thereon, Fig. 2 is a perspective viewof the hanger bar, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of Specification of Letters Patent.

1915. Serial No. 12,585.
the marker bar, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the gage bar, and Fig. 5 is a perspective new of the knife slide.
As shown best in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, my invention in its preferre embodiment, consists essentially of a hanger bar 10, a marker bar 11, and a gage bar 12. The hanger bar 10 is, as are the other elements of the device, preferably formed of steel or some similar metal and is arcuate in conformation adjacent its lower terminal. The upper terminal portion 13 of the member 10 is substantially straight and is provided with a straight flat face indicated at 1 1. ThlS fiat face 14. is adapted to engage against the piece of studding or siding to which the hanger bar is applied and is setlngred thereto by a barb or spike indicated at larly upon reference to Fig. 1, that the lower arcuate portion of the hanger bar is spaced a considerable distance from the wall, when the upper portion. 13 has been properly secured.
The extreme lower terminal of the member 10 is provided with a pair of spaced apertured hinge ears 16, between which is pivotally secured on a pin or axle 17, an apertured lug 18 which extends longitudinally from the upper terminal of the marker bar 11. This marker bar 11 is in cross sec tion substantially T-shaped, the purpose in thus forming the marker bar being to provide the laterally extending ribs or flanges 19, about which may engage the L-shaped 20 of the knife supporting slide. The lower terminal of the marker bar is enlarged to provide a boss or shoulder 21, the upper portion of which forms a stop for the slide and further constitutes a supporting shoulder for the piece of siding when the same is being secured to a building, as will be hereinafter more fully described. Ex-
tending laterally from the shoulder 21 is an lug 22 which is adapted to be in-, serted between the apertured ears or lugs 28 extending from the upper terminal of the gage bar 12. A pivot pin indicated at 24: is employed in pivotally securing the member 22 between the members 23.
The gage bar is provided with a flat inner face 25 which is adapted to engage flatly against the last applied piece of siding, as indicated at 26 in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
It will be readily apparent, particu-' The lower terminal of the gage bar, is directedoutwardly and downwardly, as indicated at 27, affording a finger grip bymeansapplied siding piece, as-is also best shown in Fig. 1.
The slide member hereinbefore referred to, consists as best shown'in. Fig. 5, of a single blank of metal which is bent to form a flat rectangular-body portion 29, an upstanding plate 30, and the L-shaped flanges 20. The member 30 rises from the body plate of theslide at one end thereof, so that the knife blade 31 which is shown in Fig. 1 is pivotally attached to the'plate by means of the pivot pin 32, may be moved into en gageinent' with the piece of siding or weather-stripping to be marked. A pair of finger plates 33 are carriedby the marker bar so that this member may be held against the siding in a convenient manner during the use of the device.
From the foregoing description and upon particular reference to Fig. 1, the manner in which the gage is employed, will be readily, appreciated. It will'be seen that when apiece of siding is to be marked, thelug 28 is first engaged against the lower edge of the last applied piece of weather-stripping 26 and the hanger bar 10 is then swung inwardly toward the building and secured to it by means of the spike. After the gage is thus secured, the terminal of the piece of siding to be marked is inserted in the space between the innerlface of the marker bar and the building, the lower edge of the board being rested uponthe shoulder defined by the boss 21, and the members 22 and 2-3. The piece of siding being thus supported, the slide is moved downwardly from the upper end of the marker bar, the knife having first been swung by its'handle 3 1 to engage its marking point against the piece of siding. After the siding has been marked and subsequently sawed, it may be inserted between the marker bar and the building and supported upon the shoulder 21, while being nailed or otherwise secured.
Projecting laterally from the plate 30 of the knife slide is a stop pin 33 which is positioned to engage the longitudinal stdp shoulder 3430f the knife blade for limiting the swinging movement of this member'into an operative position.
In reduction to practice, it has been found that the form of this invention illustrated in the drawings, and referred to in the above description as the preferred embodiment, is the most elficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the the marker bar,
