The improved super-heater is not only of novel structure in itself but it is socombined with the other parts of the boiler that it can be removed readily for repair and can be used either as a superheater or as a part of the steam generator.
The invention will be more fully explained hereinafter with reference to theaccompanying drawings in which it is illustrated and in which Figure 1 is a View partly in front elevation and partly in transverse vertical sec tion, on opposite sides of a median line, of a steam boiler of well known construction to which the improved superheater is applied. Fig. 2 is a view of the same showing the steam drum and the water drum in horizontal section and the tubes of the superheater in plan. Fig. 3 is a view in section on the plane indicated by the broken line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4c is a detail view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section showing the header of the superheater. Fig. 5 is a view in section on the plane indicated by the broken line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
The boiler shown in the drawings comprises a casing a, a steam drum 6, two water drums c, and water tubes d which'connect the steam drum with the water drums. The boiler may be heated by any desired fuel L but is shown as having a grate 8 adapted for the burning of solid fuel, with an ash pit 7 below the same and a combustion chamber 9 above. Above the Water tubes 0? and between. the same and the casing a is the usual uptake 71. through which the products of Specification of Letters Patent.

combustion pass on their way from the combustion chamber and between the Water tubes on their way to the stack 2'. All of these parts are shown as arranged as usual in boilers of the class represented, but may be arranged in any suitable manner. The superheater is preferably located between two parts or groups of the series of water tubes (Z, one at each side of a boiler such as that shown. Each superheater preferably comprises a drawn header 0 with separate transverse partitions 0' secured in place to form a series of chambers 0 and a series of U-tubes 7), each of which is connected to the header on opposite sides of a partition 0 so that the steam passes from one chamber 0 into the next only by passing through the tubes which have their ends respectively connected to such chambers. The several chambers of the header are thus-connected in succession so that all of the steam which is admitted to the headerat the inlet 0 passes through all of the tubes ;0 before it escapes from the header at the outletconnection 0*. Each chamber 0 is provided With one or more hand holes 0 through which the ends of all tubes which are connected to such chamber are accessible so that they may be secured properly to the header. Each header is secured to the outside front wall a of the boiler casing 11 and inclined to correspond with the major axis of the bank of tubes, and the tubes 79 are'extended there from through a suitable opening in such front wall between the two groups or parts of the series of water tubes (5, the tubes 7) preferably lying wholly within the group of water tubes (Z, and disposed substantially parallel to the axes of the drums.
For use as a superheater the header is connected at its inlet end 0 with the steam erator aconnection q, having a valve 9, is
provided between the end 0 of the header and the corresponding water drum 0. When the superheater is used for its primary purpose the valves 9 q" and Q3 are opened and the valve g is closed, the steam being then, taken from the superheater bythe tie pipe 9. On the other hand, if the superheater is drowned and used as a part of the circulating system of the boiler the valve r is closed and the valve 9 is opened, the steam then being taken from the steam space of the steam drum b by a steam pipe not necessary to be shown. If it should be necessary at any time to remove the superheater, to prevent it from being burned out when the flow of steam or circulation of water therethrough is cut oif because of a leak in the superheater or for any other reason, all of the valves being then closed, the superheater is removed readily on either side of the boiler by disconnecting the pipe connections at 0 and 0 the opening through the wall (a of the casing being then closed I by a suitable plate. It will be obvious also that by connecting the usual feed water pipe, not necessary to be shown, to the inlet 0 of the header and opening the connection 9 at the other end 0 of the header to the corresponding water drum the superheater might be used as a feed water heater.
It will be understood that various changes in details of construction and arrangement may be made to suit different conditions of use and that the invention is not restricted to the particular construction and arrangement shown and described herein.
I claim as my invention-:
1. A; steam boiler having a single combustion chamber extending from one side of the setting to the other, a central steam drum, two water drums one on each side of the combustion chamber, banks of inclined tubes connecting the steam drum and the water drums, said banks being divided into two groups to afford a chamber between the groups, superheaters comprising headers having transverse partitions therein to form a succession of chambers, U-tubes connected to said headers and extending therefrom into the chamber between each group of tubes the combustion chamber, banks of inclined tubes connecting the steam drum and the water drums, said tubes being curved and the tubes of each bank divided into two groups to afiord a chamber between the groups, superheaters comprisingheaders and U-tubes connected to said headers, said headers being secured to the front wall of the boiler casing and the tubes extending therefrom into the chambers between the groups of tubes and disposed substantially parallel with the axes of the drums, pipes connecting the steam drum with one end of each of said superheaters, a common outlet for the superheaters, and a valved pipe for admitting water to the superheaters when the latter are to be used as a part of the circulating system of the boiler.
