ZEN WOLIJCOT NEELY AND GEORGE A. LEWIS, 0F BAYLAND, OHIO:
INSULA'IOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1'7, 1915.
Application filed October as, 1914. Serial No. 869,045.
To all wit-0121, it may concern:
Be it known that we, ZEN W. NEELY and GEORGE A. LEWIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Rayland, in the county of Jefferson and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Insulator; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the'same.
This invention relates to an improved insulator for the connection of telegraph and telephone wires.
As an object of the invention it is the aim to provide an insulator comprising two members constructed of glass or other similar material and having threaded connections, one of said members being provided with two different series of concentric grooves, one series being deeper than the other, each series having different lateral outlet grooves, so that diifer'ent series of wires running in different directions may be connected to the insulator. The other member is provided with a series of annular ribs or tongues to engage-in the innermost grooves of the first member, thereby holding the wires in the grooves insuch a manner as to prevent short circuit by the wires contacting, where one set of wires leave the insulator.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure l is a view in section of the improved insulator. Fig. 2 is a view of the two parts or members of the insulator separated, showing their adjacent faces facing each other, thereby disclosing the two sets or series of grooves in one of the members. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base member, showing the two sets of grooves, showing the wires leaving in different directions.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the base member of the insulator having a threaded bore 2 to engage a screw 8 of the cross bar of a telegraph pole. The base member 1 has a screw threaded stud 4 to engage the threaded bore 5 of the other member 6 of the insulator. The face 7 of the base member 1 is provided with two series of grooves 8 and 9, the series of grooves 9 being deeper than the grooves 8, and are designed to receive the ribs 10 of the member 6, so as to hold. the wires 11 in said grooves, in order to prevent said wires from contacting with the other wires in the grooves 8, which would cause short circuiting. The grooves 9 are provided with outlet grooves 12, which extend in different directions than the outlet grooves 13 of the grooves 8. By this method two sets of telephone or telegraph wires may be connected to the insulator in such a manner as to extend in different directions. The member 6 is provided with lateral lugs 14 so as to enter the lateral grooves of the annular grooves a so as to insure the wires against contacting.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. An insulator for electric wires comprising two members, a base member and a head member having threaded connections,
one of said members having two sets of annular grooves, each having lateral outlet grooves for the reception of wires, the head member having means to hold the wires in one set of said grooves.
2.. An insulator for electric wires comprising two members, a base member and a head member. the adjacent faces of which have threaded connections, the adjacent face of one member having two sets of grooves one deeper than the other, and each set of grooves having lateral outlet grooves, said grooves acting to receive wires, the adjacent face of the other member having a set of annular ribs or tongues and provided with lugs or tongues to engage the deeper grooves and their outlet grooves of the adjacent face of the other member.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ZEN W'OLLCOT NEELY. GEORGE A. LEWIS.
