Be it known that we, LUns REIT'ER and State of Rhode Island, have invented-certain new and useful Improvementsin Separable Fasteners, of which the following sa specification.
This invention relatesto a socket-member for separable fasteners, and; has for itsobject to provide a simple and practical socket of inexpensive construction, the same comprising a front plate of 'concavo-convexshape having a central opening and'split throughits face, saidplate being hardened and made resilient by swagi'ng, the edge of said plate being bent back. substantially upon itself and provided-with aplurality of closely set fingers providing a neck portion adapted to pass through the goods to which it is to be attached said socket being thus adapted to receiveand removably: secure a complemental stud. A further object of the invention is to provide-an annular rib or-projecting portion around the underside of the periphery of the front plate whereby when the socket is secured to the goods this rib will be forced and set into the goods to more securely retain the goods to the socket when attached thereto.
The invention further consists in the provision of a hollow securing cap having an opening into which the ends of said fingers are passed and spread for securing the socket to said cap and at the same time securing both said socket and cap to the goods.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in theappended claim.
Of the accompanying drawings: Figure 1-is an enlarged sectional elevation showing the socket member permanently secured to the material orgoods by means of a cap into whichits fingers are clenched and also showing the engaging stud in position to enter the socket. Fig. 2.is a plan view showing the shape of the blank from which the socket member is formed. Referring to the drawings our improved socket member is preferably formed from a singlepiece of comparatively soft sheet metal, the same being provided with a plurality of fingers '10, any suitable number being employed, the number of fingers herein shown being five. The next operation after forming the metalblank as illustrated in Fig. 2 is to draw the same up into sub stantially a cup form, asillustrated in Fig.
3, with the fingers 10 extending at substantially' right angles to'thepl ane ofthe front plate 11, this front plate being at the same time struck by a cutter so as to break, pierce or shear the stock providing two short radial slits 12-42 extending from the edge inward a short distance. ,The face plate is then struck a number of times forming the same into concavo-convex shape forming an annular groove 13 in its face adjacent the edge thereof. This hammering or swaging action in addition to shaping the face plate into the desired form, also hardens the stock so that when the center portion 14 is removed from theplate a pair of resilient lips 15 are provided which will spring and open slightly to receive the stud b of the other portion of the fastener shown in Fig. 1. The edge of this'front plate is then rolled over as illustrated at 25 in Fig. 6 forming an annular bead orxrib 16 around its under edge. The fingers 10 are also carried inward toward each other until their adjacent edges-meet near their ends, thereby providing a contracted neck portion 17 adapted to be passed through a hole formed in the goods and fastened in the cap in the manner hereinafter described. The bending and shaping of these fingers about their base portion hardens the same for a portion of their length and forms a neck of stiff resilient material that will withstand the strains re quired of it, at the same time the end portions of these fingers are left in their original soft, ductile, and pliable condition by reason of their not having been hammered or swaged, whereby they may be readily bent in securing the socket to the goods as presently described. As a suitable means for readily securing this socket to the goods I have provided, a cap member 18, see Figs. 1 and 8, the same being substantially in the form of a hollow flattened button head with a hardened plate or washer 19 inclosed Within the same, said washer being provided with an engaging face 22 somewhat beveled from its center portion outward all around to its outer edge, said washer being rolled into the cap member, the rear face of said M cap being provided with a central opening 21. In securing this improved socket memher to the goods a hole is punched in the latter through which the neck portion 17 of the socket member is passed. The cap member is then placed against the opposite, side of the goods and the ends of the fingers extend into its central opening and rest against the beveled face of the washer so thatby exerting a pressure by means of a pair of pliers or other suitable device or instrument the soft and ductile ends of the fingers open and spread and are forced outward under the rear edge 20 of the cap thereby firmly securing the socket to the goods.
